The South Lantau Ordinary Bus Route[Remark 1] 1 is operated by New Lantao Bus {NLB}. It runs between Mui Wo Ferry Pier and Tai O, observes Pui O, San Shek Wan, Cheung Sha, Tong Fuk, Shek Pik and Keung Shan and observes the whole of South Lantau Road, Keung Shan Road and Tai O Road.

This is the first ever bus route on Lantau Island and the Islands District, and the number of two-way section fares are the highest in Hong Kong.

NLB also operates a non-stop South Lantau Special Route 1S for group charter services or under special demands. However, it has been many years that no buses have ever been deployed on this route - which means it is a route without actual operations.

History[]

  • 11 May 1973: New Lantao Bus Company (1973) Limited (NLB) was established and following its establishment, NLB takes over the operations of the bus route plying between Mui Wo and Tai O operated by Luen Tak Bus and Tai O Public Bus.
  • 1 November 1974: NLB massively reorganises its route network and formulates route numbers; this route was allocated as Route No. 1 and became once again a franchised route.
  • 1 January 1975: Route fares were unified. Pui O, San Shek Wan, Cheung Sha Village, Cheung Sha Beach, Tong Fuk, Shui Hau, Shek Pik and Keung Shan became sectional points for section fares.
  • 1 April 1980: Nam Shan and Ngau Kwo Tin became new sectional points for section fares.
  • 28 May 1984: NLB planned to split a new route 1A from this route and adopt one-person control system for fare collection. But it was opposed by the local residents for increased fares paid by short-haul passengers. The plan was postponed 2 weeks before its official promulgation and then became indefinitely postponement of such a plan.
  • 3 December 1984: NLB planned again to adopt one-person control system for fare collection on this route, with Pui O, Cheung Sha Village, Shui Hau, Shek Pik and Keung Shan as sectional points. Such an arrangement ended on 10 February 1985.
  • 7 July 1985: NLB again adopted one-person control system for fare collection on this route, and spliting certain holiday departures as new route 1R with one-person control system adopted. Ticket vending system retained on this route.
  • 1 April 1986: Last bus departure time from Mui Wo was extended from 23:30 to 00:30 to facilitate the last ship arrival times at Mui Wo for Yaumati FerryCentral - Mui Wo Ferry Route.[1]
  • 1 April 1987: Except for 2 buses retained under request from District Council and local residents, this route fully adopts one-person control system for fare collection, making this route the last franchised bus route to have onboard ticket vendors.[2]
  • 21 October 1991: NLB hires non-franchised buses from Kwoon Chung Tour Bus, and began providing air-conditioned bus services on this route.
  • 16 December 2001: Some departure times were shifted earlier for 5 mins due to temporary road works at South Lantau Road.[3]
  • 6 June 2005: Upgraded to full air-conditioned service and a fare concession was also provided.[4][5][6]
  • 1 March 2017: Estimated Time of Arrival Enquiry System was made available on this route.[7]
  • 13 September 2021: Octopus Interchange Discount with Route 23 was added to facilitate the service reduction of Route 2.[8]
  • 21 January 2022: Octopus interchange concessions with Route 3M was introduced.[9]

Ridership[]

The frequency of this route is relatively sporadic, resulting in low utilisation on weekdays; however, it is often fully loaded on holidays as many people travel to the countryside.

At a meeting of the Traffic and Transport Committee of the Islands District Council on 17 March 2008, the Managing Director of New Lantao Bus, Mr Wong Leung Pak, pointed out that the route had made a loss of HK$4 million a year.[10]

Related Incidents[]

Traffic Accidents[]

  • 23 August 1992: At around 2 pm, an Isuzu MT112K (ILS31/EL3479) heading towards Mui Wo collided with a bus of the same model (ILS15/DV5110) running on Route 2 at the Shek Pik Reservoir on Keung Shan Road and the latter fell down the slope, injuring 26 people.[11] Two days later (25 August), NLB submitted an investigation report on the accident.[12]
  • 24 April 2005: At around 2:00 pm, an Isuzu MT112L (ILS65/GA3085) heading towards Mui Wo crashed into a Tung Chung-bound Lantau taxi at Shek Pik Reservoir on Keung Shan Road due to a brake failure and then into a hillside, injuring 19 people.[13] The bus was subsequently decommissioned.

Other Anecdotes[]

  • 15 April 2022: Two 1-minute WhatsApp recordings from suspected bus captains driving on this route circulated on the internet,[14] suggesting that a large number of people flocked to Lantau Island on the first day of the Easter holidays has overwhelmed the capacity of the route and taking 55 minutes for the entire journey, which was longer than the estimated ones; and that a Filipino female passenger allegedly evaded her fare by putting down only HK$4 in cash for the ride and alighted at Pui O. Moreover, it was said that there was serious traffic congestion in the Cheung Sha area and that some urban taxis had illegally entered the Lantau Island closed road areas.[15]
