Mei Foo Public Transport Interchange (美孚公共運輸交匯處, Citybus Location Code MEF) is located at the bottom of the Mei Foo, under Lai Chi Kok Bridge, Cheung Sha Wan Road, Sham Shui Po District, Kowloon. It is located at underneath the flyover at the intersection of Lai Chi Kok Road and Mei Lai Road, located above MTR Mei Foo Station. The terminus is designed as an open-air covered parallel bus terminus with a separate minibus terminus for green minibuses, eight bus parking places and three public light bus parking spaces, with "Mei Foo San Estate Bus Terminus Public Toilet", and a footbridge connecting to the Castle Peak Road Rest Area (opposite is Jao Tsung-I Academy) and the Manhattan Hill podium level.

KMB calls this stop "Mei Foo Bus Terminus" (美孚巴士總站), with a self-serve restaurant for staff; whereas Citybus names this stop "Mei Foo" (美孚), same as that of the two intermediate bus stops nearby this terminus at Lai Chi Kok Road and Cheung Sha Wan Road.

This terminus is part of KMB's Mei Foo BBI, with platform numbers T1-T8.

History[]

The west bank of Lai Chi Kok Bay was originally the oil storage depot of Mei Foo Oil. In 1965. The oil depot was moved to Tsing Yi opposite Hoi Shan. The original site was rebuilt into a large private housing estate, Mei Foo Sun Chuen, from 1968 to 1978. Joining the area, the Lai Chi Kok Bridge and Kwai Chung Road were opened to traffic in October 1968. They serve as the main arterial roads connecting Kwai Chung | Container Terminal | Chung and the New Territories West to and from Kowloon.

Lai Chi Kok Bridge passes through the middle of Mei Foo Sun Chuen, dividing the housing estate into the south and north sides. There is a branch road on the eastbound side of the bridge to Cheung Sha Wan Road, and there is also an access road on the westbound side of Lai Chi Kok Road that connects the westbound side of the bridge towards the container terminal. Under the Lai Chi Kok Bridge, between Cheung Sha Wan Road and Lai Chi Kok Road, the authorities built a bus terminus, which was completed in the 1970s. KMB's policy at that time was to avoid publicity for private housing estates, so it was originally named "Lai Chi Kok (Bridge) Bus Terminus" (荔枝角(橋底)巴士總站).

From 1976 to 1982, KMB operated Coach Route 216. The terminus was located outside No. 26 Broadway Street, Mei Foo Sun Estate Phase 2, and was named "Mei Foo". When the MTR Tsuen Wan Line was opened to traffic in April 1982, Mei Foo Station was originally called "Lai Wan Station", which means Lai Chi Kok Bay; due to the early days of the MTR, many passengers confused Lai Chi Kok Station, Lai Wan Station and Lai King Station, and Lai Chi Kok Bay disappeared due to reclamation, so the name was changed in 1985.[1] KMB also changed the name of Lai Chi Kok (Bridge) Bus Terminus to "Mei Foo Bus Terminus'" on 31 May of the same year.

Today, Mei Foo Bus Terminus and the adjacent "Mei Foo BBI" are one of the busiest bus termini and bus stops in West Kowloon. There are many bus routes with stops covering almost all major areas in Hong Kong, plus the MTR Mei Foo Station is within easy reach, where passengers can easily transfer in between the MTR, buses or minibuses.

Various Auxiliary Facilities Gradually Completed[]

The KMB Old Lai Chi Kok Depot redevelopment project "Manhattan Hill" started construction in June 2007. There is a pedestrian bridge on the housing estate platform connecting Castle Peak Road Sitting-out Area and Cheung Sha Wan Road Chunghwa Power Transformer Station and Mei Foo Bus Terminus. The flyover project started in 2006 and was originally scheduled to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2008[2], but was eventually postponed to 10:00 am on 18 December 2009.[3]

In November 2013, KMB proposed to the Transport Department that the terminus should be changed from a parallel platform design to an island design. The platforms of each route should be arranged around the island in a zigzag design with a convenience store inside the terminus.[4]The plan has not yet been completed.

In view of the increasing number of pedestrians using mobile phones when crossing the road, KMB installed ground-level LED flashing lights and audio prompts at Mei Foo Bus Terminus in 2019 to remind pedestrians to pay attention to traffic while crossing the road. If the test results were satisfactory, KMB would have installed it in other suitable bus termini. The same equipment was gradually introduced into the terminus.[5]Many of the relevant equipment are currently out of operation.
