Ma Wan Chung (馬灣涌) is located in the western part of Tung Chung in the Islands District of the New Territories, bordering Tung Chung West in the south and Tung Chung Town Centre in the north.
Ma Wan Chung extends from the north of Yat Tung Estate to the Tung Chung Public Pier, covering Wong Nai Uk, but it is not within the development area of Tung Chung New Town.
History[]
Before Tung Chung was developed into a new town, the current location of Ma Wan Chung used to be the economic core of Tung Chung and the site of the Tung Chung Battery, which was then known as Tung Chung Market [1] (東涌墟).
In the 1980s, when the Hong Kong International Airport was relocated from Kai Tak to Chek Lap Kok, part of the neighbouring Tung Chung area was incorporated into the Tung Chung New Town, one of the ten major infrastructure projects under the Airport Core Programme, which also included part of the present Tung Chung West area. The new town was developed on reclaimed land to the north-east of Ma Wan Chung and on land formed by the artificial diversion of the lower reaches of the Tung Chung River, while the new economic centre of Tung Chung was planned to be located in the area of the existing Tung Chung Town Centre.
The first phase of development of the new town commenced in 1994 and was completed in January 1997. Community facilities that Tung Chung originally lacked, such as fire stations, ambulance depots, post offices, etc., were built in the Tung Chung Town Centre. The newly completed Fu Tung Estate and Yu Tung Court have made the population of Tung Chung town centre gradually larger than that of Tung Chung Market.
With the gradual completion of the ancillary facilities in Tung Chung New Town, the economic centre of gravity of Tung Chung has shifted towards the Tung Chung Town Centre area; bus routes that used to terminate at the Tung Chung Old Pier have been cancelled or merged into other bus routes leading to the Tung Chung town centre one after another. The role of Tung Chung Town as the centre of Tung Chung gradually faded out, and the area was subsequently renamed as "Ma Wan Chung" until now.
On 16 July 2010, New Lantao Bus (NLB) cancelled the original two special trips of Route 3M between Tung Chung Old Pier and Mui Wo. Since then, there is no longer any bus route to Tung Chung Old Pier Terminus, and Ma Wan Chung is no longer served by any bus routes, and local residents have to walk a few hundred metres away to Yat Tung Estate for bus service.
Road Structure[]
The road network in Ma Wan Chung is extremely simple compared with other areas in Tung Chung, comprising mainly one road, Tung Chung Road North, and all vehicles travelling in and out of Ma Wan Chung have to pass through Tung Chung West.
At present, Ma Wan Chung is not served by any bus routes.
