Bus deployments[]

A total of 9 buses are used on this route, with the main models being Enviro500 MMC 11.3m (5XX) double-deckers. Occasionally, Enviro400/Euro V 10.5m (140-150) double-deckers may also appear on this route.

This route can only be served by the above models due to the narrowing of road surface at Ping Ha Road near Hang Mei Tsuen.

Bus deployment evolution history[]

Bus deployment evolution history of MTR Bus Route K65

In the past days when operated under the name of KMB Route 55, the main models on this route included Daimler F and MCW Metrobus 9.7m (M); after the take-over by  KCR, KCR leased M-type buses originally on Route 55 from KMB for continued operation on this route, as well as supporting single-and double-deckers leased from other non-franchised bus companies (including Citybus). All leased buses left this route after the arrival of KCR's first-hand MCW Metrobus 9.7m (1XX) arrived in Hong Kong. At the time when air-conditioned buses were introduced to this route on 1 November 1998, only Mitsubishi MK (301-311) and Volvo B10M (401-415) single-decker buses were operated.

With the gradual retirement of MCW Metrobus 9.7m (1XX) in 2005, KCR Bus deployed Mitsubishi MK ((301-311), Volvo B10M (4XX) single-decker buses as well as Dennis Trident 10.6m (7XX) on this route. In 2018 and 2012 after the rail merger, with Mitsubishi MKs and Volvo B10Ms reaching the retirement age, thus MTR Bus ordered a batch of Enviro400 (14X) dual-axle buses to replace them. The first Enviro400 (140/RJ7286) debuted on this route on 27 May 2012, making it the first MTR Bus route to be dispatched with the model.

Since 2017, MTR began deploying Dennis Trident 11.3m (6XX) and Enviro500 MMC (5XX) on this route, making it the longest models on the normal service of this route. However, buses travelling between lanes in the above road sections are still normally required to give way when they meet each other. From March 2022 onwards, Enviro500 MMC 11.3m (5XX) buses even replaced Enviro400 (14X) as the main model on this route.

Ridership[]

The routing of Route K65 between Ping Shan and Lau Fau Shan was exactly the same as that of New Territories GMB Route 34. However, with frequent frequency, low fares and more favourable interchange rates with MTR, this route has taken away the source of minibus passengers, and has been enjoying a high patronage, with the main source of passengers coming from the section between Lau Fau Shan and the MTR Tin Shui Wai Station.

However, as the section of Ping Ha Road passing through Hang Mei Tsuen on Route K65 is winding and narrow, and heavy vehicles often run on it, it is necessary to use short buses on weekdays to ensure traffic safety, but this has limited the overall carrying capacity; and the frequent congestion at Yuen Long Main Road also unreasonably lengthens the travelling time, therefore, short-working special trips have been provided to and from Lau Fau Shan and Tin Shui Wai Stations during peak hours on weekdays and on public holidays. When GMB Route 34 was proposed to be cancelled in March 2022, TD and MTR made use of this opportunity and proposed to split this route into a whole-day short-haul extension, K65A, which only reaches Tin Shui Wai Station, for effective use of resources, and the proposal was expected to be implemented on 24 April 2022[7]. However, the original plan was to substantially reduce the frequency of the service of the main route directly to Yuen Long Town to 20-30 minutes, which was strongly opposed by District Council members. In the end, the Transport Department revised the proposal and postponed the implementation of Route K65A to 27 June on the same year, with the route to be operated only during peak hours from Mondays to Fridays and no further reduction in the frequency of the main service of the route.[8][9]

According to the past information, the ridership of this route is as follows:

  • 2021: The average passenger rate towards Lau Fau Shan between 7-10am was 70%.[10]
  • 2022: Passengers travelling to and from Lau Fau Shan and Tin Shui Wai Stations accounted for 70% of the total, while those going to Yuen Long Station accounted for 30%; there were cases of passengers unable to board during the busiest half-hour.[11]

Related incidents[]

  • 1 June 2017: At 9:23 a.m., a Yuen Long-bound Enviro400 (148/RP8749) was travelling past a logistics company at Ping Ha Road near Fung Kong Tsuen, Lau Fau Shan, when a medium goods vehicle suddenly reversed out of the way, hitting the rear of the bus on the left side near the rear of the bus, causing damages to the body of the vehicle and shattering of the windows of the vehicle, and causing injuries to a male and two female bus passengers from broken glass.[12]
