The MTR Bus (Northwest New Territories) Route K54 runs circular between Wo Tin Estate and Tuen Mun Central via Yan Tin Estate, MTR Siu Hong Station and San Hui.

Route K54 runs on Tuen Mun Road Express between Siu Hong and Tuen Mun Central, and is the first MTR Bus route via Hong Kong Strategic Route after 12 years for the cancellation of of route A73, and also the first MTR Bus Route debuted service through the Bus Route Planning Programme.[Remark 1]

History[]

Commencement Background[]

To facilitate the future population growth in Area 54 of Tuen Mun, the Transport Department proposed in the 2019-2020 Bus Route Planning Programme to commence 6 new bus routes terminating in the area, with one of them running towards MTR Siu Hong Station, via Tuen Mun Hospital and Kin Sang in return trips, and deciding the operator through public tendering. Tuen Mun District councilor thought MTR Bus should operate the route between Area 54 and Siu Hong Station, so as to provide concessions with the railway, and suggested to extend the route to Tuen Mun Central for a stronger connection between Area 54 and the town centre.[1]

Later at October 2020, the Transport Department revised the original plan, giving the rights to MTR Bus to operate the route between Area 54 and Siu Hong, and extending the route to Tuen Mun Central, omitting Tuen Mun Hospital and Kin Sang that was in the original plan. The affected areas were replaced by a Citybus Route 50M heading towards Tuen Mun Station.[2]

Ridership[]

This route provides service for Wo Tin and Tsing Tin Estate residents to go to Siu Hong Station, sometime buses are already full when approaching Yan Tin Estate or even Tsing Tin Estate, so passengers who are waiting cannot aboard the bus. Owing to this MTR Bus has added more departures, and even dispatched outworks posting at Siu Hong Station, so as to prevent uneven departures by the traffie jams at Tuen Mun Road.[6][7]

According to documents from the District Council, the ridership of this route is as follows:

  • 2022: The AM occupancy rate is roughly 60-70%[8]
