Ridership[]
According to District Council documents, the ridership of this route is as follows:
- 2019: A survey conducted by Transport Department on 12 and 15 June at Lung Kwu Tan Road near 312 Sha Po Kong during late night hours indicated that there were less than 10 passengers onboard last two departures towards Lung Kwu Tan.[2]
- 2021: The occupancy rate during AM and PM peak hours were around 40% and 70% respectively.[3]
Controversies[]
Route K52 takes a meandering route between Lung Kwu Tan and the MTR Tuen Mun Station, passing through Tuen Mun Ferry Pier and Chi Lok. Many passengers prefer to interchange to Route 506 at Butterfly Stop to reach Tuen Mun Station. To support the development of Pillar Point and provide more convenient access to the Tuen Ma Line from Lung Kwu Tan, the MTR proposed in 2023 to significantly revise the routing of Route K52. The revised route would follow Lung Mun Road and Pui To Road to first reach Tuen Mun Station, then proceed through Tuen Mun Town Centre and Chi Lok, with Yuet Wu Villa serving as the Tuen Mun town terminus. The plan aims to reduce travel time between Lung Kwu Tan and Tuen Mun Station while also complementing Route 506 along the route. However, travel time between Lung Kwu Tan and Tuen Mun Pier would significantly extended and MTR would introduce two additional Route K52P services in the morning, following the original routing of Route K52.[4] However, many residents in Lung Kwu Tan are accustomed to purchasing daily necessities at Tuen Mun Ferry Pier, and there are also students attending schools in the area. Route K52P fails to fully meet these needs, sparking controversy[5][6]; some local organisations have even questioned whether the plan was laying the groundwork for reducing services on Route 506.[7]

The female pedestrian was severely injured while a female passenger on the bus was slightly injured.[9]

The LRV was hit and derailed and the front ends of both vehicles were severely damaged. 21 passengers onboard both vehicles, a 52-year-old MTR Bus captain and a 26-year-old Light Rail captain of Turkish decent was injured.[10][11]
- The MTR Bus captain surnamed Tong was later charged with causing grievous bodily harm by dangerous driving and was sentenced to 12-month imprisonment on 19 August the next year;[12]
- Due to the age of the bus, the damage to the chassis and broken fuel tank, it was not repaired afterwards, and was parked in stationary at MTR Hung Shui Kiu Bus Depot until being de-registered on 19 May 2017.[13]
