Lung Cheung Road (龍翔道), part of Route 7, connects Tai Po Road in Tai Wo Ping, Sham Shui Po District and Choi Hung Interchange in Wong Tai Sin District. It straddles the northern part of the Kowloon Peninsula, connecting Tai Wo Ping in Sham Shui Po District, Kowloon Tong in Kowloon City District, Wang Tau Hom, Wong Tai Sin, Diamond Hill and Choi Hung in Wong Tai Sin District, and is the major artery of traffic in northern Kowloon.
This road section between Lion Rock Tunnel Road and Chuk Yuen Road is the boundary road between Kowloon City District and Wong Tai Sin District.
History[]
In the 1960s, the Government built a new road in the foothills of the North Kowloon group of hills to connect the Kwun Tong Industrial Area with the Kwai Chung Container Terminals. The section of Lung Cheung Road between Shek Kip Mei and Choi Hung Interchange, originally known as Kowloon Foothills Road, was designed by Scott Wilson Kirkpatrick & Partners and constructed by Gammon (Hong Kong) Limited.
The section of Lung Cheung Road between Tai Po Road and Shatin Pass Road was opened to traffic at 1:00 p.m. on 24 June 1961[2], initially as a single two-lane road, and then expanded to two lanes during the construction of the Lion Rock Tunnel[3]. During the same period, Hammer Hill Road was substantially reconstructed for the construction of Choi Hung Estate, and the new section was merged into Lung Cheung Road, and the section between Sha Tin Road and Hammer Hill Road was completed on 30 September 1974, meaning that the whole Lung Cheung Road was opened to traffic. The entire section of Lung Cheung Road was gazetted as early as 11 November 1960, when the road was opened to traffic.[4]
To enhance the efficiency of Lung Cheung Road, the Government closed the junction of Shatin Pass Road in 1982, thus permanently dividing Shatin Pass Road into two discrete sections of road.[5][Remark 1]
In July 1994, the Government carried out the Lung Cheung Road Improvement Project, which was completed in August 1998, by widening the section west of the Lion Rock Tunnel to a total of six lanes of traffic, and demolishing the original Tai Wo Ping Interchange to construct a new flyover to and from Beacon Heights along Tai Po Road, Nam Cheong Street/Cornwall Street[Remark 2][6]. The Lands Department had to wait until 18 March 2016 to officially name the section of flyover as Lung Yuet Road.[7]
Structure[]
Lung Cheung Road and Ching Cheung Road were built together in the 1960s. They are also built along the hillside and are very similar in structure. The two roads are divided by Tai Po Road, but vehicles travelling westbound on Lung Cheung Road cannot go directly to Tai Po Road and have to go via Lung Yuet Road.
There are many junctions along Lung Cheung Road, including Tai Wo Ping Interchange (from Tai Po Road to Beacon Heights), Lion Rock Tunnel Road, Chuk Yuen Road, Po Kong Village Road, Tai Hom Road/Hammer Hill Road, Clear Water Bay Road and Choi Hung Interchange. The section west of the Lion Rock Tunnel is a viaduct and the section of the MTR Kwun Tong Line between Wong Tai Sin Station and Choi Hung Station is underneath Lung Cheung Road between Wong Tai Sin and Ngau Chi Wan.
The at-grade section of Lung Cheung Road off Choi Hung Estate is only accessible from Clear Water Bay Road, and there is a flyover at the eastern end leading directly to Kwun Tong Road, which must be used by vehicles travelling eastbound on Kwun Tong Road. Some bus routes travelling to Kowloon East via this section of flyover cannot stop at the bus stop opposite to Kai Yip Estate on Kwun Tong Road Kwun Tong Road and therefore, many routes travelling to Wong Tai Sin make a detour via Choi Hung Road and Choi Hung Access Road in San Po Kong. On the westbound side, bus routes run along Kwun Tong Road via Choi Hung Interchange and turn into Lung Cheung Road to serve passengers in Kai Lai District and Choi Hung Estate. Only routes from Kowloon Bay Business Area turning into Lung Cheung Road and routes 33B, 234C, 268A, 290E, A29, E22A, E22C and NA29 running in semi-through mode use flyovers. At present, apart from the special trips of Route 2F, 2P and 214 series, the rest of the bus routes passing through Lung Cheung Road west of Fung Mo Street are travelling to and from various new towns in the New Territories.
The small section of southbound road connecting Lung Cheung Road westbound between Lung Cheung Road and Choi Hung Road, i.e. the Kam Wan House bus stop, was originally part of Hammer Hill Road. The Lands Department gazetted the road section on 21 April 2017 and merged it into Lung Cheung Road.[8]
