Route E21A was diverted due to the Umbrella Revolution in October 2014, with a passenger notice using location codes (OME, YTU) posted at Yat Tung Estate Bus Terminus
Citybus and former NWFB have developed a series of Location Codes for the termini, major intermediate stops, timing points and depots/offices of their routes to facilitate internal communication.
These location codes are commonly found on bus captains' log sheets and terminus supervisors' shift running orders. At the same time, some bus enthusiasts who are familiar with the operation of Citybus will also use these codes to refer to the location of buses, and thus it can be regarded as part of the jargon of the industry.
The following table shows a comparison of the codes and the locations they represent, with the source of the inferred codes. The names of bus stops shown in the "Stop Name" column of the table are based on internal nomenclature, which is still shown in internal documents (e.g. internal code lists) and change lists, which may not necessarily correspond to the names of the bus stops, and may refer to landmarks that are outdated.

Citybus and NWFB use location codes similar to those used by MTR (see MTR Station Codes).
- Basic coding rules
- One-word stop name (e.g. Cyberport): take the first three letters (CYB)
- Two-word stop names (e.g. Admiralty (West)): take the first two letters of the first character and the first letter of the second character (ADW)
- Three-word or above stop names (e.g. Oi Yin Street and Ying Wa Girls' School): usually the first, second and third letters (OYS/YWG)
If the stop is named after a public housing or HOS estate (e.g. Chak On Estate or Lung Mun Oasis), the words "Estate", "Court", etc. are usually ignored when picking up the code (CHO/LUM). If a bus stop is named after a nearby MTR station (e.g. Diamond Hill Station or Kam Sheung Road Station), the MTR station code (DIH/KSR) of the bus stop will usually be followed and the word "Station" will not be included in the code.
If the name of a bus stop contains the name of a district (e.g. Causeway Bay (Moreton Terrace)), unless the stop is named after the direction of the district (e.g. Admiralty (East), Hang Hau (North)), the name of the district will be ignored and the code will be taken directly from the name of the street or the name of the building (MOT).
However, it should be noted that not all codes are derived from the names of bus stops. Most of the bus stop codes are taken from the name of the street where the bus stop is located (e.g. the code for Ocean Court is taken from Aberdeen Praya Road, APR).
If the original numbering method is already in use at another stop, it will be necessary to avoid the use of the number, depending on the circumstances of each case.
Usage[]
On log sheets or shifts, the location code is used mainly to indicate the starting and finishing points of the route. The codes are also used to specify the tolled road sections that the bus driver has to pass through when deadheading, or the time of departure from a timing point, for example:
- In order to save tolls [1], in most cases, buses need to use the Cross-Harbour Tunnel [2] when crossing the harbour when deadheading. However, in some cases, bus captains are required to use specific tunnels due to time constraints (e.g. Buses on Route 619 requires a deadheading via the Eastern Harbour Crossing to Shun Lee).
- Buses on Citybus Route 66 is required to use the Aberdeen Tunnel when deadheading between Hong Kong Island North and Stanley.
In the information system, the location code forms the second part of the RDV and represents the destination of the route.
