The North Lantau External Bus Route E42 is operated by Long Win Bus (LWB). It runs between Sha Tin (Pok Hong) and Airport (Ground Transportation Centre); after passing through Sha Tin Central, Chun Shek Estate and Tai Wai, it takes the Shing Mun Tunnels and Tsing Tsuen Bridge, with stops along Tsing Yi Road West, and then running through Cheung Tsing Highway and Lantau Link to and from Tung Chung Town Centre and the Airport Logistics Area.

History[]

When the Transport Department (TD) invited tenders for the first batch of 25 bus routes for the new airport, it planned to introduce Route E41 to and from Tai Po Central, which would also serve passengers from Sha Tin and Tai Wai. Subsequently, the TD assessed that there was also a high demand for the route in Sha Tin, which led to the creation of this route.

  • 9 April 1998: Route E42 commenced service between Pok Hong and Chek Lap Kok at that time, providing service from 06:30 to 19:00 daily.[1]
  • 22 June 1998: Airport terminus was relocated from Chek Lap Kok to the Airport (Ground Transportation Centre) with extended service hours from 05:30 to 24:00 to tie in with the opening of the Airport Logistics Area and to prepare for the full operation of the Hong Kong International Airport.[2]
  • 6 July 1998: Detoured via Chun Ping Road and Catering Road West for both directions.[3]
  • 11 July 1998: After leaving the Ground Transportation Centre Bus Terminus, the route was changed to go directly to Airport Road via Cheong Lin Road and no longer observed Cheong Tat Road.[4]
  • 27 June 1999: The routing at Airport Logistics Area was simplified:
    • For Airport direction, upon reaching Chek Lap Kok South Road, buses would continue to follow Chek Lap Kok South Road straight to Chun Wan Road, no longer returning to Chun Wan Road via Scenic Road, Chun Yu Road, Chun Wan Road South, Chun Wan Road and Chun Ping Road.
    • For Pok Hong direction, upon reaching Chun Ping Road, buses were rerouted via Chek Lap Kok South Road to Tung Chung, and no longer returning to Chun Wan Road via Chun Wan Road South, Chun Yu Road and Scenic Road to Chek Lap Kok South Road; and at the same time, in view of the commissioning of the Bus Stop Loop on Scenic Road, buses were detoured via the loop and a new stop was set up there, in order to replace the intermediate stop "Cathay City" at Scenic Road southbound.
  • 16 March 2002: Additional intermediate stops and section fares were introduced at Tsing Yi Road West to make up for the shortfall of the original service at Tsing Yi Road West after the diversion of Route A41 to Tsing Yi North Coastal Road.[5]
  • 2003: Various interchange concessions were introduced in phases:
    • 6 January: Interchange concessions with Route S64 and NLB Routes 37, 37A and 38. [6]
    • 17 March: Interchange concessions with Route E31;[7]
    • 21 June: Interchange concessions with various LWB "A" routes. [8]
  • 21 August 2003: Sha Tin terminus was relocated to Sha Tin Wai due to construction work of Ma On Shan Rail. The reinstatement date is yet to be checked.
  • 15 April 2005: Omitted "Mei Lam" stop on Tai Po Road for Airport direction and was rerouted via the slip road of Mei Tin Road northbound (now Mei Fai Street) and Heung Fan Liu Street, before returning to Mei Tin Road southbound and Tai Po Road and temporarily call at "Mei Lam Estate" stop on Mei Tin Road southbound to tie in with the construction of Trunk Road T3 at Tsing Sha Highway.
  • 4 July 2005: Daily departures before 6:00 a.m. and after 12:00 midnight in both directions were diverted via the at-grade section of Texaco Road instead of the Texaco Road Flyover to tie in with the implementation of noise control measures at the Flyover. [9]
  • 13 January 2006: A new special departure from Yat Tung Estate to Pok Hong on weekday mornings was introduced.[10]
  • 1 August 2008: Due to the construction of Trunk Road T3 at Tsing Sha Highway, the section of Tai Po Road opposite Mei Fung House Mei Lam Estate was closed permanently. The route was changed to turn right at Tai Wai Road directly after arriving at Mei Tin Road northbound for Airport direction, no longer passed through the slip road of Mei Tin Road and Heung Fan Liu Street, with the stop at "Mei Lam Estate" cancelled and replaced by "Tai Wai Road" stop on Tai Wai Road.
  • 25 August 2008: Bus stops "Chun Ping Road" and "Airport Freight Forwarding Centre" on Chun Wan Road Eastbound were cancelled for Airport bound and were replaced by a new stop between the original stops - "Chun Wan Road North".[11]
  • 21 March 2015: Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA) Enquiry System was introduced on this route. [12]
  • 30 March 2017: Starting from 2:30pm, buses were diverted via a section of Cheong Tat Road underneath the Cheong Hong Road viaduct to "Regal Airport Hotel" bus stop for Tung Chung Station direction, and the "Car Park 4" bus stop was cancelled to tie in with the closure of the section of Cheong Tat Road outside the Government Lounge Carpark for the Airport Passenger Terminal Building extension.[13][14]
  • 3 June 2017: A new stop was added at "Chik Fai Street" on Mei Tin Road.[15]
  • 3 November 2017: The stop outside Car Park 1 was permanently relocated to outside Terminal 1 with effect from 10:00am to accommodate the conversion of the former into a coach pick-up/drop-off area.[16][17]
  • 18 February 2019: The special departure from Yat Tung Estate to Pok Hong was rerouted via Tung Chung North instead of Tung Chung Town Centre, and was independently numbered as E42P.[18]
  • Unknown: Special trips from Chun Shek Estate were cancelled.
  • 8 May 2021: Octopus interchange concessions with NLB Routes 3M, 11 and 23 were introduced.[19][20] It was originally a 6-month trial, but was later furthered till 31 October 2024.[21][22]
  • 1 November 2023: Octopus interchange concessions with NLB Route 36 was introduced.[23]
  • 19 August 2024: Rerouted to head directly to Ground Transportation Centre after arriving near Gate House No. 2 at Cheong Lin Road and no longer served Cheong Tat Road for Airport direction.[24]
