The North Lantau External Bus Route E33 is operated by Long Win Bus (LWB). It runs between Tuen Mun Central and Airport (Ground Transportation Centre), via On Ting Estate, Yau Oi Estate, Goodview Garden, San Shek Wan and Butterfly Beach, observing Tuen Mun Chek Lap Kok Tunnel Road and Shun Long Road to and from Tung Chung Town Centre and the Airport Logistics area.

Route E33 is the shortest North Lantau External Bus Route at present.

History[]

The main article of this section is Hong Kong International Airport#Route Network.
  • 26 May 1998: Route E33 commenced service between Tuen Mun Central and Chek Lap Kok.
  • 22 June 1998: Terminus was relocated to Airport (Ground Transportation Centre) to facilitate with the opening of the Airport Logistics Area and to prepare for the official commissioning of the new Hong Kong International Airport.[1]
  • 6 July 1998: Detoured via Chun Ping Road for both directions.[2]
  • 11 July 1998: After leaving the Ground Transportation Centre Bus Terminus, the route was changed to go directly to Airport Road via Cheong Lin Road and no longer observed Cheong Tat Road.[3]
  • 18 July 1998: Diverted via Cheong Hong Road (Terminal 1) after observing Cheong Lin Road (Gate House No.2) and omitted Cheong Lin Road.[3]
  • 27 June 1999: The routing at Airport Logistics Area was simplified:
    • For Airport direction, upon reaching Chek Lap Kok South Road, buses would continue to follow Chek Lap Kok South Road straight to Chun Wan Road, no longer returning to Chun Wan Road via Scenic Road, Chun Yu Road, Chun Wan Road South, Chun Wan Road and Chun Ping Road.
    • For Tuen Mun Central direction, upon reaching Chun Ping Road, buses were rerouted via Chek Lap Kok South Road to Tung Chung, and no longer returning to Chun Wan Road via Chun Wan Road South, Chun Yu Road and Scenic Road to Chek Lap Kok South Road.
  • 16 July 2006: The first bus time towards Airport was advanced to 05:20 from 05:30.[4]
  • 25 August 2008: Bus stops "Chun Ping Road" and "Airport Freight Forwarding Centre" on Chun Wan Road Eastbound were cancelled for Airport bound and were replaced by a new stop between the original stops - "Chun Wan Road North".[5]
  • 9 May 2013: Tuen Mun Road Interchange stop was added for Airport bound but without providing any interchange discounts.[6]
  • 27 July 2013: Tuen Mun Road Interchange stop was added for Tuen Mun bound but without providing any interchange concessions.
  • 12 October 2013: Octopus interchange concessions with KMB routes stopping at Tuen Mun Road Interchange was introduced.[7][8]
  • 9 March 2015: The special departure from Airport at 23:36 daily omitting Airport Logistics Area was cancelled to redeploy resources to the delayed last bus time of Route E33P.[9]
  • 21 March 2015: Estimated Time of Arrival Enquiry System was added to this route.[10]
  • 28 December 2020: The following changes were made to tie in with the opening of Tuen Mun Chek Lap Kok Tunnel Road:[11][12]
  • 8 May 2021: Octopus interchange concessions with NLB Routes 3M, 11 and 23 were introduced.[13][14] It was originally a 6-month trial, but was later furthered till 31 October 2022.[15][16]
  • 20 June 2021: To tie in with the 2nd phase of TMCLK Bus Routes Reorganisation, original interchange concession scheme between this route and Routes E32A, E34P and E34X were replaced by Route E36A which commenced service on the same day.[17]
  • 18 July 2022: Interchange concession with Route R33 was introduced.[18]
  • 1 November 2023: Octopus interchange concessions with NLB Route 36 was introduced.[19]

  • Half-fare for children aged below 12 and senior citizens aged 65 or above; the remainder of the fare after half-fare will be counted as 10 cents.
  • Elderly persons aged 65 or above using Senior Octopus Cards or Personalised Octopus cards, Hong Kong residents aged 60 to 64 using JoyYou Card, and eligible persons with disabilities using Personalised Octopus cards with "Persons with Disabilities Status" can enjoy a flat fare of $2.0 per journey under the $2 Concessionary Fare. If the concessionary fare for eligible persons with disabilities aged below 12 and senior citizens aged 65 or above is less than $2.0 after a 50% discount from the regular fare, the beneficiary is only required to pay the original concessionary fare; if the original full fare for Hong Kong residents aged 60 to 64 or eligible persons with disabilities is already less than $2.0, the beneficiary is also only required to pay the original full fare.
  • Passengers are required to tender exact fare by cash or by Octopus card when boarding. No exact change will be given.
  • Passengers can also pay their fares through a variety of electronic payment tools (e-payment system), including using contactless VISA, JCB Card, MasterCard, UnionPay, American Express, Discover Card, Diners Club International Credit Card, UnionPay Credit Card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay, AlipayHK "EasyGo" and UnionPay "QuickPass", BoC Pay "Ride Code" and WeChat Pay HK or WeChat "Ride Code". Passengers using the above payment method cannot enjoy interchange concessions with non-KMB/LWB routes and cannot enjoy "Public Transport Fare Subsidy" nor the "Public Transport Fare Concession Scheme for the Elderly and Eligible Persons with Disabilities".

Ridership[]

Route E33 is the only full-day route to and from the Airport Logistics Area and Tuen Mun, therefore resulting in a high frequency and high ridership. With the diversion to the Tuen Mun - Chek Lap Kok Tunnel, this route further attracted passengers from Lung Mun Oasis and Siu Shan Court.

According to the Bus Route Development Programme and other documents, the ridership of this route are as follows:

  • 2006: The average number of passengers per trip was about 98.
  • 2010: The occupancy rate was 73% in the morning peak period towards Airport and 65% in the afternoon peak period towards Tuen Mun.[22]
  • 2013: Ridership increased by 2.0% following the opening of the Tuen Mun Road Interchange.[23]
  • 2015: Maximum occupancy rate of 85% during peak hours and 73% during off-peak hours.
  • 2016: TD indicated at the Tuen Mun District Council meeting that it had conducted a survey on the service of this route and the average occupancy rate was 80% during the morning peak period, with two trips having a 100% occupancy rate. LWB also conducted a survey on this route in March and the average occupancy rate for the Airport-bound service was about 70% in the morning peak period and 68% in the afternoon peak period for the Tuen Mun-bound service.
  • 2020: The occupancy rate during the busiest hour is 79%.[24]

Related Incidents[]

  • 16 March 2016: At around 2pm, a Tuen Mun Town Centre-bound Volvo B9TL (709/NG994) was travelling on Kap Shui Mun Bridge when it suddenly hit the kerb, bursting all the windows and doors on the lower left side of the vehicle. 4 passengers were hit by the splinters and 3 passengers were sent to hospital for treatment while the other one sought medical attention on his own.[25]
  • 25 February 2019: An Enviro500 MMC 12.8m (1505/UD5793) on this route crashed into two private cars on North Lantau Highway, causing serious damage to the front and upper doors of the bus.[26]
  • 25 July 2020: An Airport-bound Enviro500 MMC caused dissatisfaction to a lorry driver at Wong Chu Road due to a suspected lane cutting problem. The bus was forced to stop by the lorry upon arrival at the Tuen Mun Road interchange and passengers had to change to another bus there.[27]
