Ridership[]

According to the 2016-2017 Bus Route Planning Programme, the highest passenger utilisation rate for this route was 91%.[28]

Controversies[]

In view of the intake of large-scale housing estates in Tung Chung North in recent years and the increase in commuting between Tsuen Wan and Kwai Fong, coupled with the high patronage of the original Route E31 via Tung Chung North, the Transport Department (TD) has proposed in the 2016-2017 Bus Route Planning Programme that this route be detoured via Tung Chung North to cope with the population growth in the area.

However, the patronage of this route is also high, and the proposed route via Tung Chung North has not only lengthened the journey time, but also increased the route loading, which has aroused the dissatisfaction of a number of DC members. As a result, when the Transport Department and LWB submitted a paper to the Islands District Council in November 2016 on the proposed enhancement of bus services in Tung Chung North, they shelved the proposal of using this route via Tung Chung North on a whole-day basis, and replaced it with the introduction of the Route E32A to cope with the increase in the demand for the occupation of the Ying Tung Estate and to facilitate the residents of Tung Chung North to travel between Tsuen Wan and Kwai Fong.[29]

Related Incidents[]

  • 7 November 1999: At 2:30 p.m., a Dennis Trident heading for Chek Lap Kok Ferry Pier had just left Kwai Fong MTR Station and was turning right from Kwai Yi Road into Kwai Foo Road when the driver of the vehicle failed to notice a police motorcycle passing on his left side, the left handlebar of the pump knocked the motorcycle down and the Traffic Police officer was sent to the hospital with a bruise on his right hand.[30]
  • 19 June 2001: In the morning, a Dennis Trident (187/HT7230) heading for Chek Lap Kok Ferry Pier was about to turn into the Cheong Tat Road roundabout at Airport Road when its driver, suspected to have dozed off, mistakenly drove into the opposite lane and collided with a MAN A53 (HKR137/JM6146) travelling on Route DB02R, the Discovery Bay bus was pushed back some ten metres and hit a Dennis Lance travelling on Route S1, resulting in 12 injuries, with the bus captains of this route and Route DB02R in serious condition.[31][32]
  • 11 February 2012: At around 2:00 pm, a Kwai Fong Railway Station-bound Enviro500 (802/MA4140) collided with a seven-passenger vehicle at the Lantau Link Toll Plaza, resulting in minor injuries to the driver of the two vehicles and a female passenger in the seven-passenger vehicle who was sent to hospital.[33]

No one was injured in the incident.[34]
  • 21 April 2019: At around 4:00 pm, a traffic accident occurred at Tsing Ma Bridge towards the Airport, in which five buses collided in a series of collisions involving a Park Island Transport Young Man JNP6122G (301/PM6822), an Enviro500 MMC (6510/TJ3111) serving on this route, a bus of the same type serving on Route E34B (9501/SJ7944), a bus of identical model (6834/VE6639) on Route A11 and another bus of identical model (8033/SJ8393) on Route A10, resulting in at least 38 injuries. [35][36][37] Of these, 301/PM6822 was not repaired due to severe front-end damage and was written off early.
