The Airbus Route A47X is operated by Long Win Bus (LWB). It runs between Tai Po (Tai Wo) [Remark 1] and Airport (Ground Transportation Centre), via Fu Heng Estate, Tai Po Central, MTR Tai Po Market Station and Kwong Fuk Estate, and connects to and from the Hong Kong International Airport and HZMB Hong Kong Kong Port via Tsing Sha Highway and Lantau Link, with additional detours via Pak Shek Kok and Ma Liu Shui for outbound and inbound directions during designated time periods during daily morning and evening hours respectively.
History[]
One-stop direct to Airport[]
LWB launched Route A47 on 19 December 2015, with only one trip provided for each direction, leading to low ridership[1]; In view of this, the Administration proposed to introduce Route A47X in the 2016-2017 Bus Route Planning Programme, which would run between Tai Po Market Station and the Airport (Ground Transportation Centre) on a whole day basis, and passes through Tai Po Market, Tai Wo Estate, Fu Heng Estate, Tai Po Cental and Kwong Fuk Estate in order to reach Tolo Highway, with half-hourly departures in Tai Po, and the fare for the whole journey was as high as $30.9.
There was also no bus service connecting Tai Wo and Tai Po Market Station areas to Lantau Island. In the 2016-2017 Bus Route Planning Programme, the Transport Department and LWB proposed to introduce a new supplementary route A47X, which would run between Tai Po Market Station and the Airport (Ground Transportation Centre) on a whole day basis, passing through Tai Po Market, Tai Wo Estate, Fu Heng Estate, Tai Po Centre and Kwong Fuk Estate in order within Tai Po, and then via Tolo Highway and Route 8 to reach the Airport Passenger Terminal Buildings directly, with half-hourly departures and the fare for the whole journey is as high as $30.9. The new route is expected to save about 10 to 15 minutes of travelling time for passengers from Tai Po Centre and Kwong Fuk Estate, which will help divert passengers from Route E41.
During the consultation process, District Councillors had different views on the routing, including that Tai Po Market should not be driven into as the traffic is heavy; Fu Heng Estate, Chung Nga Court and the future public housing estate in Area 9 (now Fu Tip Estate) would have tens of thousands of people and should be taken care of; and that setting up a stop in Tai Wo can take care of the residents of Lam Tsuen Valley and Tai Wo, and so on. [2]
District Council members put forward a total of four amendment proposals, among which the then Tai Yuen District Council member, Cheng Chun-ping of the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong (DAB), put forward a "point-to-point" proposal at the District Council meeting held on 5 May. The proposal suggested that the route should only set up a bus terminus at a transport hub in the area, so as to allow different housing estates to take other modes of transport to the terminus to transfer to other buses, and that buses should depart from the terminus and go straight to the airport from Tai Po.[3] The proposal was referred back to the T&TC for discussion, the Tai Po terminus was decided to be Tai Po Market Station, and was withdrawn by Hon Lau Chi-sing of HKCSS and Hon Li Kwok-ying of DAB in support of the revised proposal, and LWB also submitted the revised proposal of ‘one-stop direct’ accordingly, and lowered the fare to $27.7. Some other Members queried that the ‘point-to-point’ proposal blindly shortened the travelling time without taking into account the overall interests and needs of the residents of Tai Po, and that passengers travelling with luggage on intra-district routes for interchanges would also increase the loading of other transport modes, thus inconveniencing passengers travelling on other routes. On the other hand, the representative of LWB claimed that most of the passengers would accept one interchange. In the end, the TAC voted 14 in favour, 10 against and 2 abstentions to approve the trial of the ‘point-to-point’ scheme for six months. [4][5]
- 20 August 2016: Route A47X was put into service, running between Tai Po Market Station and Airport, then a special service on route A47. [6]
- During the initial period of the route, a very small number of LWB routes were arranged to display the word "Express" on the bus electronic route boards[Remark 2] in a manner similar to that of the express routes under the banner of Citybus and NWFB. [Remark 3]
- 19 November 2016: An up to $6.0-Octopus interchange concession scheme with KMB regular solely-operated routes (regardless of direction) was introduced.[7]
Extension to Fu Heng[]
The patronage of Route A47X is also on the low side. In December, the Transport Department proposed that Route A47 be merged with Route A47X, with the latter running along Nam Wan Road and via Tai Po Central, and that it be replaced by a special service via Pak Shek Kok.[8] However, the proposal was criticised for neglecting the needs of the residents of Fu Heng Estate, and was not approved by the Tai Po District Council. [9]
The Transport Department resubmitted a revised scheme in January 2017, proposing that the Tai Po end of Route A47X be extended to Fu Heng, and then follow the original routing to and from the airport after running along Nam Wan Road to Tai Po Market Station [10], which was eventually endorsed by the Traffic and Transport Committee of the Tai Po District Council at its meeting on 13 January.[11] As the morning service is the first trip for buses leaving the depot and the departure from the airport is relatively late, only the daily departure from Tai Po (Fu Heng) before 08:00 passed through the Tai Po Central Bus Terminus during the initial period of the change [12], and it was not until the end of the year that LWB proposed that all airport-bound trips should serve the stop. [13]
- 27 January 2017:[14]
- Tai Po terminus was changed to Fu Heng, observing Tai Po Market Station and Kwong Fuk Estate to/from Airport;
- The first bus time from Fu Heng was advanced to 05:00, and the daily departures from 05:00 to 08:00 from Fu Heng were detoured via Tai Po Central Bus Terminus;
- Departures from Fu Heng at 07:00 daily and from Airport at 18:30 daily were detoured via Pak Shek Kok, University Station and Cathay City, replacing Route A47 which was discontinued from the same day;
- No longer displayed the word "EXPRESS" on the electronic destination sign.
- 1 July 2017: Octopus interchange concession with Route S64 was introduced. [15]
- 16 December 2017:[16]
- All Airport-bound trips were detoured via Tai Po Central Bus Terminus;
- The first bus time from Airport (Ground Transportation Centre) was delayed to 10:05;
- The departure time of special departure from Airport (Ground Transportation Centre) via Cathay City, Ma Liu Shui and Pak Shek Kok was changed to 18:05.
- 29 November 2019: To facilitate the Terminal 2 expansion project, Airport-bound buses were diverted via Airport Road to Airport South Interchange, and the "Terminal 2" stop on Sky Plaza Road was cancelled.[17][18]
Extension to Tai Wo[]
After the extension of Route A47X to Fu Heng, patronage has continued to increase at an average rate of 50%, with some of the patronage coming from Route E41, and thus some District Councillors have proposed to extend routes E41 and A47X to Tai Wo [19][20][21], advancing the first bus time to Airport, and even full-day detours via HZMB Hong Kong Port. In the Bus Route Planning Programmes published in 2020 Bus Route Planning Programme and 2021 Bus Route Planning Programme, TD and LWB both proposed that this route should detour via the HZMB Hong Kong Port for both directions and be extended to Tai Wo to tie in with the occupation of Fu Tip Estate. As for the earlier first bus service, LWB rejected the proposal on the ground that the capacity of the first bus service was not high, and DC members criticised that it should not be taken into account as it was already not a peak period. [22]
From 2020 onwards, due to the impact of the COVID-19 epidemic on the aviation industry, the service of A47X was cut repeatedly, and the above amendments were also delayed. After the resumption of service in 2023, LWB finally resumed service after repeated requests from the regional organisation "Transport in Tai Po". [23]
- 6 January 2020: A trial special departure was introduced until 1 April 2020, departing from Airport (Ground Transportation Centre) to Tai Po (Fu Heng) at 07:30 every Mondays to Fridays, via Cathay Pacific City and Pak Shek Kok, with the same routing and stopping arrangement as the original afternoon special departures.[24][25][26] Due to the outbreak of novel coronavirus pneumonia, the service was suspended from 24 February.[27][28]
- 1 April 2020: Due to novel coronavirus pneumonia outbreak, the last bus from Tai Po (Fu Heng) was advanced to 14:30 and the first bus from the Airport was postponed to 15:05. [29][30]
- 13 July 2020: Departure from Tai Po at 06:00 was detoured via Airport Expo Boulevard and a new stop was added at "AsiaWorld-Expo".[31]
- 17 August 2020: Due to the outbreak of novel coronavirus pneumonia, service was reduced to six trips to Airport and six trips to Tai Po during morning and afternoon peak hours respectively.[32]
- 30 November 2020: Special trips detouring via Pak Shek Kok called additionally at bus stops "Chong San Road" on Chong San Road and "Ma Liu Shui Public Pier" on Science Park Road for Airport direction, as well as "Ma Liu Shui Public Pier" on Science Park Road for Tai Po direction.[33]
- 21 January 2021: Special trips detouring via AsiaWorld-Expo called additionally at "Hong Kong SkyCity Marriott Hotel" and "Sky City Interchange" stop at Sky City Road East for Tai Po direction.[34]
- 1 November 2021: Special departure via Pak Shek Kok for Tai Po direction detoured via Airport Expo Boulevard and Sky City Road East at the same time, with additional stops at "AsiaWorld-Expo", "Hong Kong SkyCity Marriott Hotel" and "Sky City Interchange".[35]
- 1 August 2022: Departures from the Airport at 17:05 daily were detoured via Airport Expo Boulevard and Sky City Road East. [36]
- 5 December 2022: In response to the relaxation of immigration restrictions by the Government, the service hours for Airport bound and Tai Po bound were extended, with departures from 05:00 to 16:30 for Airport bound and from 14:05 to 00:00 for Tai Po bound.[37]
- 13 August 2023:[38][39]
- Tai Po terminus was extended from Fu Heng to Tai Wo, and also detoured via HZMB Hong Kong Port;
- The peak hour special trip via Pak Shek Kok no longer stopped at University Station, and the starting point of the original section fare from University Station to Tai Po was changed to Ma Liu Shui Public Pier;
- The last bus time from Tai Wo was postponed to 22:05, and first bus time from Airport (Ground Transportation Centre) was resumed to 10:05.
- 3 September 2023: A new stop was added at "Tai Po Public Swimming Pool" on Ting Tai Road for Airport direction. [40]
- 5 November 2023: A new stop was added at Tsing Sha Highway BBI for both directions.[41]
- 3 December 2023: The amount of interchange concession with KMB's regular solely-operated routes was increased to free of charge for one trip between these two routes until 31 August 2024. [42]
- 1 February 2024: Daily departure from Airport at 17:35 detoured via AsiaWorld-Expo and Sky City Road East. [43]
Enhancing services to Pak Shek Kok[]
In the 2022-2023 Bus Route Planning Programme, there was a proposal for Route A47X to further detour via Pak Shek Kok on a whole day basis in order to make good use of the spare capacity, but this was questioned by residents of Tai Po New Town, who considered that the detour would result in slower journeys than those of Route E41, which was contrary to the original intention.[44] By 2024, the TD proposed instead that only seven trips to the Airport in the morning and seven trips to Tai Po in the afternoon should be scheduled to detour via Pak Shek Kok.[45]
- 13 October 2024: The time periods for trips detouring via Pak Shek Kok was extended to 07:00 - 10:00 from Tai Wo and 18:05 - 21:05 from Airport. [46][47]

Bus deployment evolution history of LWB Route A47X |
---|
In the early years of Route A47X, the luxury version Enviro500 MMC 12.8m (15XX) was assigned to the entire route. As this route was originally a special service of Route A47, the vehicles used were nominally scheduled buses on the main route. All the other whole-day running order buses were transferred to this route on a full-time basis in the form of order, except for the peak hour dispatchments (which has now been replaced by a 12m (55XX) version of the same bus), which was shared between the two routes, and all the buses were transferred to this route on a whole-day basis after the discontinuation of Route A47. |

Ridership[]
At the initial stage of its operation, Route A47X had a narrow service area, resulting in unsatisfactory patronage. Therefore, TD and LWB proposed to the Tai Po District on 22 December 2016 a proposal to restructure Routes A47 and A47X. While Route A47 was cancelled, Route A47X would extend its coverage to serve more local residents and at the same time divert passengers from Route E41 more effectively. As many Members present at the meeting requested for a split of the route, the Department, after immediate discussion with LWB, proposed to revise the alignment according to Members' views to start from Fu Heng and travel to and from the airport via Tai Po Central, Tai Po Market Station and Kwong Fuk Estate[48]. The Department formally submitted the above revised proposal[49] in January 2017, and at the same time added special trips vdetouring ia Pak Shek Kok and MTR University Station to replace Route A47. As a result, the Traffic and Transport Committee of the Tai Po District Council passed the motion at its meeting on 13 January, and the proposal came into effect on 27 January of the same month.
Since the extension of the route, the service area has been further extended to Fu Heng Estate and Sun Hing Garden, and the overall patronage has increased significantly.
According to the Bus Route Planning Programmes and other documents, the ridership of this route is as folows:
- 2016: The highest hourly occupancy rate was 33% towards the airport and 18% towards Tai Po, with a slight increase in the overall occupancy rate.[50]
- 2017:
- 2020: The occupancy rate during the peakiest hour was 65%.[53]
- 2021: The occupancy rate during the peakiest hour was 55%, while the occupancy rates of the Tai Po to Airport trips at 10:00 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. were only about 9% and 5% respectively; about 10 passengers boarded and alighted at Ma Liu Shui each day, accounting for less than 1% of the total number of passengers; and the number of passengers boarded at Fu Heng for the Airport was about 200 each day, accounting for about 10% to 15% of the total number of passengers.[54]
- 2022: The occupancy rate during the peakiest hour was 37%[55]
- 2023: The occupancy rate during the busiest hour was 33%; the average occupancy rate at HZMB Hong Kong Port from 4:00 pm to 10:00 pm in mid-August for the Tai Wo direction was about 60%; and off-peak patronage was about 10 to 30%.[56][57]
Related incidents[]
- 19 February 2020: At about 9:00 am, a deadheading Enviro500 MMC (1527/UF5997) bound forTai Po (Fu Heng) collided with a lorry carrying fresh fish near Eagle's Nest Tunnel on Tsing Sha Highway heading towards Sha Tin, in which the right front end of the former was damaged and the rear end of the latter was deformed, and the driver of the bus involved in the incident sustained injuries and had to be sent to hospital for treatment. Remarks[]
- ↑ The electronic destination sign of Route A47X bound for Tai Po displays "Tai Po", instead of "Tai Po Tai Wo" as shown on the electric sign of KMB routes 72 and 74A.
- ↑ The others are Route A33 Express Trips (later renumbered as Route A33X) and Route X1.
- ↑ Only the positions of the route number and the wordings of "EXPRESS" are swapped. Besides, LWB chose the simplified "EXP Express", while Citybus chose "Express" in full.
