The Airbus Route A42 is operated by Long Win Bus (LWB). It runs between Sha Tin (Wong Nai Tau) and Airport (Ground Transportation Centre), via Shui Chuen O, Sha Tin Wai, Sun Tin Wai, Hin Tin, taking Tsing Sha Highway and Lantau Link to and from HZMB Hong Kong Port and Airport Passenger Terminal Building.

History[]

To cope with the development and population growth in Sha Tin and to improve the airport bus route network, the Transport Department (TD) and LWB have proposed in the 2019-2020 Bus Route Planning Programme to introduce a new routeA42 between Shui Chuen O and the Airport (Ground Transportation Centre), which passes through Pok Hong Estate, Chun Shek Estate, Hin Tin Estate, Mei Lam Estate and then onto Tsing Sha Highway, so as to facilitate the commuting to and from the Airport by passengers from Sha Tin and Tai Wai. LWB expects that Route A42 would change the travelling pattern of bus passengers travelling to and from the Airport in Sha Tin and absorb some of the passengers currently travelling on Route E42, and the service of Route E42 would need to be adjusted.[1] Most of the Members at the meeting requested LWB to reorganise the existing and proposed A and E routes to cover more districts.[2]

In response to the views of the District Council, TD and LWB proposed in the "2020-2021 Bus Route Planning Programme" to extend Route A42 from the Sha Tin end to Shek Mun using five double-decker buses. The new route would return to the original proposed routing via Siu Lek Yuen to Shui Chuen O., and would turn into Mei Tin Road immediately after reaching Sun Chui Estate, and go straight to Tsing Sha Highway after crossing Holford Garden, replacing last year's proposal of extending the Sha Tin end of Route A41 to Wong Nai Tau, whereas Mei Lam Estate and Hin Tin would be served by Route A46 instead.[3] Sha Tin District Councillors criticised Route A46 as being meandering and unable to cope with the demand of the whole of Tai Wai. [4]

In November 2020, the Transport Department issued a revised proposal to shorten the Sha Tin end of Route A42 to Wong Nai Tau, passing through Tsang Tai Uk and onto the Lion Rock Tunnel Road, with a stop at the back of Sun Tin Wai Estate, and then via Hung Mui Kuk Road into Hin Tin, and increase the number of buses to six double-decker buses, running from 05:35 to 21:35 towards the Airport, and from 09:50 to 23:50 towards Sha Tin, while Shek Mun Estate was re-directed to be served by Route A41.[5] The then Sun Tin Wai District Councillor, Ching Cheung Ying (程張迎), criticised that the arrangement was unacceptable as residents of the estate had to travel via ramps, lifts and rugged paths to reach the stop to board buses. Other Members also wondered why the service time of Route A42 was shorter than other "A" routes in the area.[6]

Due to the impact of the novel coronavirus pneumonia outbreak on the aviation industry, the number of passengers travelling to and from the airport has not yet fully recovered to the pre-epidemic level. TD revised the proposal again in August 2023 to reduce the service hours of Route A42 to half-day operation, running from 05:35 to 14:05 towards the Airport and from 15:50 to 23:50 towards Sha Tin, while Route A41 was re-routed to run via Sha Tin town centre instead of Jat Min Chuen.[7] The local organisations were surprised to see that Sha Tin Wai would be served by the sparse airport bus service with only half-day service via Pok Hong Estate, and denounced as unrealistic the expectation that passengers from Sun Tin Wai Estate would carry their luggage up the hill. They cited a counter-proposal they had written to TD before the revised scheme emerged, advocating that Route A41 should continue to serve Jat Min Chuen, and that Route A42 should pass through Chun Shek Estate and Hin Tin after passing through Sha Tin Wai.[8]
