The Airbus Route A34 is operated by Long Win Bus (LWB). It runs between Hung Shui Kiu (Hung Yuen Road) and Airport (Ground Transportation Centre), passing through Lam Tei, Siu Hong, Ching Tin Estate, Wo Tin Estate, Leung Tin, Tai Hing Estate, Shan King Estate, San Shek Wan and Butterfly Beach and connects to the HZMB Hong Kong Port and the Hong Kong International Airport via the Tuen Mun Chek Lap Kok Tunnel Road.

This route was launched when the Tuen Mun Chek Lap Kok Tunnel Road was opened to traffic, and is the cheapest airport bus route along with Routes A33 and A33X, as well as the first daytime franchised bus route that goes deep into Tuen Mun Area 54; it is even the only Airbus route that do not pass through any major Strategic Routes, together with Route A33X.[Remark 1]

History[]

Opening Background[]

In order to cooperate with the opening of the Tuen Mun Chek Lap Kok Tunnel Road, the Transport Department launched a bus route reorganisation plan to consult the District Council in June 2020. It is recommended that the original Route A33 be diverted through Tuen Mun Swimming Pool instead of San Shek Wan, and Route A33X would be diverted to connect Fu Tai and Tuen Mun Town Centre via Castle Peak Road - San Hui, Route A37 would be changed to terminate at Long Ping Station and would no longer serve Hung Shui Kiu; whereas Northwest Tuen Mun, Hung Shui Kiu, San Shek Wan and together with the section from Chung Uk Tsuen to Lam Tei which was only served by Route A33P which had only one trip daily woud be replaced by the new whole-day route A34 to enhance the coverage of Airbus routes and pass through the public housing estates in Tuen Mun Area 54 (i.e. Ching Tin Estate and Wo Tin Estate) under development at the time.

Finally, Route A34 was put into service on 28 December, 2020, when the Tuen Mun Chek Lap Kok Tunnel Road was fully opened to traffic the day before[1][2]. However, Route A37 did not move its terminus to Long Ping Station until 20 June 2021, causing the two routes to have the same starting and ending points for about half a year.

Ridership[]

According to District Council documents, the ridership of this route is as follows:

  • 2022: The passenger pax percentage during the busiest hour is 42% [16].

Problems arose[]

The meandering design of this route, which has to pass through a number of housing estates in Northwest Tuen Mun, has been criticised. According to the results of a trial run arranged by the Transport Department and Long Win Bus in the afternoon of 18 December during the off-peak hours, it took about 40 minutes to reach the entrance of Tuen Mun Chek Lap Kok Tunnel Road from Hung Shui Kiu, even if there were no stops. Citing a comparison with the then Route A37, which also ran between Hung Shui Kiu (Hung Yuen Road) and Airport, Hung Fuk District Councillor Chan Shu Fai (陳樹暉) queried that the effectiveness of the new route might not be as good as the existing service, and requested that more express trips be introduced or other arrangements be made.[17][18] However, a reporter from Cable News conducted another comparison of the journeys between the two routes on the first working day after the opening of the new route, and found that from the Hung Yuen Road Bus Terminus, the A34 arrived at the Airport Terminal two minutes faster than the Route A37.[19]

However, the journey time of Route A34 was unstable, especially during the morning peak hours. LWB also noted that the patronage of Route A34 in the section between Hung Shui Kiu and Lam Tei was poor, and it could not serve the residents in the area effectively. To ensure that Hung Fuk Estate can enjoy a more stable service to and from the airport, the Transport Department (TD) confirmed that when Route A37 was diverted to run through Tuen Mun Chek Lap Kok Tunnel, it would continue to run through the section of Hung Tin Road at-grade adjacent to the Estate and set up an intermediate stop at Shek Po Tsuen, and then resume its original proposed routing to travel to and from Yuen Long Highway, so as to strike a balance of interests of various districts.[20]

Related Incidents[]

  • 26 June 2021: When an airport-bound Enviro500 MMC was turning onto Yan Po Road at Tsz Tin Road, the bus captain, suspected to be dissatisfied with the slowness of the vehicle in front of him, cut the double white line to overtake, occupied the opposite traffic lane and drove back to the original traffic lane, the process was captured by a driving recorder of a private car at the back of the vehicle and uploaded to the Internet, which aroused a heated discussion among netizens.[21]
