The Airbus Route A33X is operated by Long Win Bus (LWB). It runs between Tuen Mun (Fu Tai) and Airport (Ground Transportation Centre); after observing Lingnan University, Prime View Garden, MTR Tuen Mun Station, Tuen Mun Town Centre and On Yau, it takes Tuen Mun Chek Lap Kok Tunnel Road to and from HZMB Hong Kong Port, Airport Passenger Terminal Building and SKYCITY.

This route is the shortest Airbus route at present, and is also the cheapest airport bus route together with Routes A33 and A34; it is also one of the Airbus routes that does not pass through any Strategic Routes, together with Route A34.[Remark 1]

History[]

Independently numbered to differentiate with the express route[]

LWB Route A33 was upgraded to whole-day service on 26 August 2016, with the original route was called "Express Route", and "Regular Route" services via Castle Peak Road - Castle Peak Bay to Tai Lam was introduced at the same time; however, it caused confusion to the passengers, and therefore there were voices in the districts calling for the expeditious route numbering of the buses, so that the problem could be improved.

LWB told the District Council in November 2016 that it expected to change the route numbering of the "express trips" on Route A33 to "A33X" [1][2] on 12 December of the same year, but the implementation was eventually postponed for about a month.

Although this change only came into effect on 9 January 2017, there were already "express" vehicles displaying "A33X" on their electronic destination signs and carrying passengers from as early as the day the "regular service" was added to the Route A33. [3]

Extension to Fu Tai, Wider Coverage[]

A33X-banner-taihingbt

Promotional banner hanging at Tai Hing Bus Terminus following the extension of the service scope of Route A33X in 2017

At the initial stage of this route, the service area of Tuen Mun District was narrow and even overlapped with Route E33, therefore, it was suggested to extend the route to Fu Tai Estate, and then along Tuen Mun Road and Tsing Tin Road to Leung Tin and Hung Kiu, and increase the number of trips of afternoon detours via Cathay Pacific City to two in order to increase the number of passengers and expand the airport bus network to the northern part of Tuen Mun [7]. The route was further detoured via Siu Hong Court and Green Land Garden during the implementation of this route as the District Councillors demanded to cater for the needs of residents along Shek Pai Tau Road [8], which resulted in a circuitous routing in the Tuen Mun District.

In 2018, when the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HZMB) was commissioned, this route was selected as one of the first "A routes" to detour via the Hong Kong Port artificial island [9]. On the same day, it was further routed through Kin Sang.

  • 23 December 2017: Split from Route A33 as a separate route and extended to Fu Tai Estate, via Siu Hong Court, Tai Hing Estate, Leung King Estate and Tin King Estate: [10]
    • From Fu Tai Estate: The route would observe Tuen Kwai Road, Castle Peak Road - Lingnan, Lam Tei Interchange, Tsing Lun Road, Siu Hong Road, Siu Hong Court Bus Terminus, Siu Hong Road, Tsing Lun Road, Lam Tei Interchange, Tuen Mun Road, Tsing Tin Road, Tsun Wen Road, Shek Pai Tau Road, Ming Kum Road, Tin King Road, Tsing Tin Road, Tuen Mun Road, Pui To Road, Ho Pong Street, and then follow the original routing to the Airport after reaching the bus terminus at Tuen Mun Station;
    • From Airport: After reaching Tuen Mun Station Bus Terminus according to the original routing, the route would observe Pui To Road, Tuen Mun Road, Tsing Tin Road, Tin King Road, Ming Kum Road, Shek Pai Tau Road, Tsun Wen Road, Tsing Tin Road, Tuen Mun Road, Lam Tei Interchange, Tsing Lun Road, Siu Hong Road, Siu Hong Court Bus Terminus, Siu Hong Road, Tsing Lun Road, Lam Tei Interchange, Castle Peak Road - Lingnan, and Tuen Kwai Road;
    • The last bus from Airport was delayed to 00:00 and trips via Cathay City was increased to two during afternoon peak hours;
    • Service hours from Fu Tai Estate was extended to 05:00 to 23:15.
  • 24 October 2018: To tie in with the commissioning of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, both directions were detoured via HZMB Hong Kong Port Artificial Island: [11][12]
    • For Airport bound, starting from 8:30 a.m. on the same day, after stopping at "Terminal 2" stop on Sky Plaza Road and reaching Airport South Interchange according to the original routing, buses were detoured via Cheong Lin Road, Sky City Interchange, Chek Lap Kok Road, Shun Fai Road, Shun Wui Road, Chek Lap Kok Road, Sky City Interchange and Cheong Lin Road to Airport South Interchange, and a new intermediate stop at HZMB Passenger Clearance Building on Shun Fai Road was added;
    • For Tuen Mun direction, Starting from 9:00 a.m. on the same day, after reaching Airport South Interchange according to the original route, buses were detoured via Cheong Lin Road, Sky City Interchange, Chek Lap Kok Road, Shun Fai Road and Shun Wui Road, and a new intermediate stop at HZMB Hong Kong Port was added, then return to Airport South Interchange by the same routing.
    • The last bus towards the Airport was delayed to 23:45, whereas the first bus towards Tuen Mun was advanced to 05:45.
    • The afternoon special trips detouring via Cathay City departed 10 minutes later.
  • 27 November 2018: [13][14]
    • After stopping at "HZMB Hong Kong Port" stop, buses were diverted via Shun Long Road back to North Lantau Highway to original routing;
    • No longer observed Siu Hong Court Terminus and the section of Tuen Mun Road between Lam Tei Interchange and Tsing Tin Interchange for both directions, and was rerouted via a section of Tsing Lun Road between Siu Hong Road and Tsun Wen Road:
      • New stops were added at "Siu Hong Road" on Tsing Lun Road and "Lok Sang House Kin Sang Estate" Tsing Tin Road for Airport direction;
      • New stops were added at "Tai Hing North Station" on Tsing Tin Road and "Yan Tin Estate" Tsing Lun Road for Tuen Mun direction.
    • Original special trips from Airport detouring via Cathay City was changed to depart from "Cathay City", and would return to original routing after observing Ground Transportation Centre and HZMB Hong Kong Port.
  • 14 January 2019: New stops at "Siu Yin House Siu Hong Court" on Tsing Lun Road for Airport direction and "Kei Lun Wai" on Tsing Lun Road for Tuen Mun direction were added on a trial basis.[15]
  • 29 November 2019:[16][17]
    • To facilitate the Terminal 2 expansion project, Airport-bound buses were diverted via Airport Road to Airport South Interchange, and the "Terminal 2" stop on Sky Plaza Road was cancelled.
    • Due to low ridership, special departure from Cathay Pacific City to Tuen Mun was cancelled and was changed to depart from Ground Transportation Centre instead.
  • 14 April 2020: An additional stop at Tuen Mun Road Interchange for both directions was added on a trial basis. [18][19]

Route straightening and diversion via Tuen Mun Chek Lap Kok Tunnel[]

The Tuen Mun Chek Lap Kok Tunnel Road directly connects Tuen Mun with Lantau Island, which is far more direct than using the Lantau Link and detouring via Ting Kau Bridge, and it is only logical that all routes travelling from Tuen Mun to Tung Chung and the airport should be diverted to this route. In the "Franchised Bus Route Adjustments to tie in with the opening of the northern link of the Tuen Mun - Chek Lap Kok Link", Route A33X from Fu Tai Estate would only pass through San Hui before reaching Tuen Mun Town Centre, which would be a more direct route than in the past. As for the service between Northwest Tuen Mun and the airport, it would be provided by the new route A34. A number of District Councillors queried that the section of San Hui via Tuen Mun Heung Sze Wui Road was often congested and should not be accessed, while the Transport Department claimed that the Heung Sze Wui Road had fewer traffic light-controlled intersections, but eventually accepted Members' suggestion to divert the route to Pui To Road.

  • 28 December 2020: To tie in with the commissioning of Tuen Mun Chek Lap Kok Tunnel Road, the following changes were implemented:[20][21]
    • Rerouted between Tuen Kwai Road and Tuen Mun Station southbound via Castle Peak Road - San Hui and Pui To Road, and northbound via Tuen Mun Heung Sze Wui Road and Castle Peak Road - San Hui, and no longer serving Siu Hong Court, Kin Sang, Leung Tin and Hung Kiu, and all stops from "Fu Tai Estate" on Castle Peak Road - Lingnan and "Hung Kiu" on Tuen Mun Road were cancelled. The service area of Northwest Tuen Mun was replaced by the newly introduced Route A34 on the same day, with additional stops at "Lingnan University", "Brilliant Garden" and "Prime View Garden" on Castle Peak Road for Airport direction, as well as "Tuen Mun Station", "V City, Yan Ching Street" on Tuen Mun Heung Sze Wui Road, "Prime View Garden", "Fung Tei Station", "Brilliant Garden" and "Lingnan University" on Castle Peak Road for Fu Tai Estate direction;
    • The route was rerouted via Wong Chu Road, Lung Fu Road and Tuen Mun Chek Lap Kok Tunnel Road between Hoi Wong Road and Chek Lap Kok, omitting Tuen Mun Road, Ting Kau Bridge, Lantau Link and North Lantau Highway, the original "Tuen Mun Road Interchange" and "Lantau Link Toll Plaza" stops were cancelled;
    • Changed to observe HZMB Hong Kong Kong Port first, then to Cathay Pacific City (special departures only), and then to Terminal 1 for Airport direction;
    • The departure times of Cathay Pacific City special departures from Fu Tai Estate was adjusted to 06:45 and 07:45;
    • The full fare was decreased from $27.7 to $15.0;
    • The fare from Goodview Garden to Fu Tai Estate was reduced from $11.0 to $6.5.
  • 20 June 2021: New stops at "San Wai Tsai" and "Hoh Fuk Tong College" on Castle Peak Road - San Hui were added for Airport direction. [22]
  • 18 July 2022: Interchange concessions with Route R33 were introduced. [23]
  • 26 November 2023: Both bounds were detoured via the newly completed SKYCITY Transport Terminal.[24]
  • 11 December 2023: A new special trip from Cathay Pacific City departing at 17:30 on Mondays to Fridays was introduced, and would resume normal routing to Fu Tai Estate after arriving at Airport (Ground Transportation Centre).[25]
