Ridership[]

Route A33's terminus was changed to Tuen Mun Station before it was upgraded to a whole-day service, the service scope was similar to that of Route E33 that the passenger volume has been low and operating losses have been incurred. Since when it was diverted from Castle Peak Road - Castle Peak Bay to Castle Peak Road - Tai Lam, it has absorbed some of the passengers travelling to and from the Airport along Castle Peak Road.

According to Bus Route Planning Programmes and other information, the passenger capacity of this route is as follows:

  • 2006: The passenger occupancy rate is about 10-20%, and about 140 passengers travelled on this route every day (about 18 people per bus).[39]
  • 2013: The occupancy rate was 19%.
  • 2015: The highest occupancy rate was 31%.
  • 2016:
    • February: The highest occupancy rate was 37%.
    • November: The occupancy rate was 20% during the busiest hour.[40]
  • 2017:
    • May: The busiest hour occupancy rate is about 30%.[41][42]
    • August: The occupancy rate during the busiest hour is about 18%.
  • 2020: The occupancy rate during the busiest hours is about 51%.[43]
  • 2021: The occupancy rate during the busiest hour is 36%.[44]

Derived Problems[]

When Route A33 was upgraded to a full-day service, it had regular departures via Sam Shing Estate to the Castle Peak Road - Tai Lam Chung, and express departures to the Airport via Tuen Mun Road after arriving at Goodview Garden. The two services used the same number, which causes inconvenience to passengers on the section from Tuen Mun Station to Goodview Garden. In view of this, some district councilors requested that the two services use different numbers to facilitate passenger identification.[45][46]After discussion by the District Council, the route number of the express service was changed to "A33X" starting from 9 January 2017.

In addition, since this route passes through Siu Hei Court, it needs to detour through Goodview Garden and Hoi Wing Road before returning to the Castle Peak Road section from Sam Shing Estate to Tai Lam Chung. The travelling time from Castle Peak Road along Tuen Hing Road and the section from Chi Lok Fa Yuen to Siu Lam are nearly ten minutes slower than Routes 52X, 61M, K51 and K53. In addition to not saving traveling time, the service scope overlaps with Routes E33 and A33X, and it is also unable to serve passengers at Chi Lok Fa Yuen, therefore some district councilors requested that this route be diverted via Chi Lok Fa Yuen to facilitate residents in the area to travel to and from the airport, and at the same time, the route in Tuen Mun District can be straightened.[47][48]In the A33 series reorganization document submitted to the District Council in August 2017, the Transport Department recommended that this route be added via Chi Lok Fa Yuen, and it was implemented on 23 December in the same year.

On 28 December 2020, this route was significantly rerouted to coincide with the opening of Tuen Mun Chek Lap Kok Tunnel Road. However, passengers in the Siu Lam area need to be detoured via the Tuen Mun Ferry Pier Area to go to Airport with an increase in travelling distance. In addition, relevant changes have resulted in the loss of airport bus services in the Tai Lam Chung area and have been criticised as improper planning.[49]Therefore, the district councilors suggested that Route A38 should be diverted through the Tai Lam Chung area and diverted through the Tuen Mun Chek Lap Kok Tunnel, and that the Tuen Mun District terminus of this route should be moved to the New Territories-bound stop of the Tuen Mun Road BBI.[50]

Related Incidents[]

  • 24 August 2023: At 9:29 a.m., an Enviro500 MMC 12.8m (1523/UE9678) heading towards the Airport broke down in the Tuen Mun Chek Lap Kok Tunnel. The left rear tire suddenly burst into flames, and many passengers evacuated the bus with their luggage. Firefighters arrived after receiving the report, and dispatched a hose and a rescue team to put out the fire. During the incident, the bus captain reported that he was feeling unwell and was sent to the hospital by ambulance. [51]
