Hong Kong Buses Wiki

The Airbus Route A32 is operated by Long Win Bus. It runs between Kwai Chung Estate and Airport (Ground Transportation Centre), via Tai Wo Hau, Tsing Yi Estate and Tsing Yi South, and connects via Lantau Link to and from Hong Kong International Airport and HZMB Hong Kong Port.

History[]

Splitting to serve Kwai Tsing[]

Since the opening of the Chek Lap Kok Airport on 6 July 1998, Route A31 has been providing one-way services to and from the airport for residents of Tsuen Wan Town Centre, Kwai Hing, Kwai Fong and Tsing Yi South. However, its circuitous routing makes it unattractive to passengers travelling to and from Tsuen Wan Town Centre, and it fails to cover the private housing estates along Texaco Road and Wing Shun Street, which are experiencing a rise in population, and the residents of the area around Cheung On Estate can only use Route E32, which detours via Tung Chung and the Airport Logistics Area.

In view of this, in the 2016-2017 Bus Route Planning Programme, the Transport Department and LWB proposed to introduce an Airbus route between Kwai Chung Estate and the Airport via Tsing Yi, and to rationalise the existing Route A31 via Tsing Yi, which would no longer pass through Kwai Chung and Tsing Yi South, so as to reduce the circuitousness of the route and to continue to serve the original Airbus catchment area on Tsing Yi, thus facilitating travellers to travel to and from the three hotels next to Rambler Crest.

  • 3 December 2016: Route A32 commenced service, running between Kwai Chung Estate and the Airport (Ground Transportation Centre). [1]
  • 1 July 2017: Octopus interchange concession with Route S64 series was introduced. [2]
  • 24 October 2018: An additional stop was added at "Ching Wah Court" on Tsing Yi West Road for Kwai Chung Estate direction.
  • 29 November 2019: To facilitate the Terminal 2 expansion project, Airport-bound buses were diverted via Airport Road to Airport South Interchange, and the "Terminal 2" stop on Sky Plaza Road was cancelled.[3][4]
  • 15 March 2020: The new e-payment system was piloted, with three types of payment methods: contactless credit card, mobile payment and 2D payment. Currently, it supports contactless Visa, MasterCard and UnionPay cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay, as well as AlipayHK "Easy Ride" and UnionPay's "QuickPass", totalling seven methods. Passengers can continue to enjoy Interchange concessions between routes, but the new fare system is not included in the Public Transport Fare Subsidy Scheme and the $2 Fare Concession Scheme for the Elderly and Eligible Persons with Disabilities. [5][6]
  • 1 February 2021: Departures from Kwai Chung Estate at 06:30 and Airport at 17:30 every day were detoured via Airport Expo Boulevard with an additional stop at "AsiaWorld-Expo". [7]
  • 10 May 2021: Daily normal departure at 18:00 from Airport was detoured via Airport Expo Boulevard. [8]
  • 1 August 2021: Trips detouring via AsiaWorld-Expo called additionally at "Hong Kong SkyCity Marriott Hotel" and "Sky City Interchange" stops at Sky City Road East. [9]
  • 1 November 2021: Original daily departure from Kwai Chung Estate at 07:00 detoured via Airport Expo Boulevard and Sky City Road East. [10]
  • 1 August 2022: Departures at 07:30 from Kwai Chung Estate and 17:00 from the Airport every day were detoured via Airport Expo Boulevard and Sky City Road East. [11]

Withdrawal from Kwai Fong for the new route[]

North Kwai Chung and Lei Muk Shue had for long been lacking a direct bus service to the Airport, while many places on Tsing Yi Island were also not been covered by airport bus services. To enhance the airport bus services across the Kwai Tsing District, the Transport Department and Long Win Bus proposed introducing a new Route A30 in the 2020-2021 Bus Route Planning Programme, which would replace Route A32's service in Kwai Fong; concurrently, Route A32 would instead run via Tai Wo Hau, Tsing Yi Estate and Greenfield Garden to Tsing Yi South, extending airport bus services across the entire Tsing Yi Island.[12] A District Councillor in Tsing Yi pointed out luggage racks were full or the buses were fully loaded at Ching Wah Court, and that detouring via more locations would increase the travelling time, hence suggesting to reinstate the frequency. Another councillor contended that Route E32 carries substantial passenger volume, arguing that resources should be allocated to both routes rather than diverted from E32. The Transport Department stated that the bus operator would need to deploy additional resources, deploying four extra buses to operate the newly introduced airport bus routes, which would enhance the overall capacity of airport buses serving Kwai Tsing District, while increasing the total number of daily services between the Airport and Kwai Tsing District.[13][14]

Originally scheduled for implementation in the fourth quarter of 2020, the plan was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which caused a significant decline in demand for airport bus services. Passenger numbers on airport bus routes serving Kwai Tsing District and overnight airport bus routes fell by approximately 70% compared to pre-pandemic levels.[15] Consequently, the plan was postponed and only came into effect on 25 June 2023.[16]

  • 25 June 2023: To tie in with the commencement of service of Route A30:[17][18]
    • Rerouted via Tai Wo Hau, Tsing Yi Estate and Greenfield Garden, no longer serving Kwai Hing and Kwai Fong;
    • Departures from Kwai Chung Estate at 06:25 and 07:25 and from the Airport (Ground Transportation Centre) at 17:05 and 18:05 are reduced to two trips each way via AsiaWorld-Expo;
    • The service time from Kwai Chung Estate was changed to 05:25 - 23:25, whereas that from Airport (Ground Transportation Centre) was changed to 06:15 - 23:45.
  • 3 December 2023: The amount of interchange concession with KMB's regular solely-operated routes was increased to free of charge for one trip between these two routes until 31 August 2024. [19]
  • 17 March 2024: Detoured via HZMB Hong Kong Port for both directions, and a new stop was added at "Tsing Yi Ferry" on Fung Shue Wo Road for Airport direction. [20][21]
