The Kowloon Green Minibus (GMB) Route 49 is operated by Koon Wing Motors Limited (冠榮車行有限公司)(Passenger Service Licence (PSL) No. 3289C) under Ma Ah Muk. It runs between Shun Tin and Kowloon City Ferry, providing service only during peak hours.

This route is officially a circular route as listed in the according to Transport Department's Schedule of Services, but under any circumstances, all passengers must alight after the vehicle has arrived at Kowloon City Ferry Pier, and there are separate departure times at the two termini, therefore it belongs to a fake circular route. In addition, the short-working service 49M runs between Shun Tin and MTR Choi Hung Station whole day every day, and has the same routing as Route 54M, making it a rare example of a short-distance service with longer service hours than the main route.

History[]

  • 6 November 1992: The Transport Department invited public tenders for 12 groups of 19 new green minibus (GMB) routes, in which this route was grouped together with Route 48.[1]
  • Circa late-1993: Route 49 entered service, running circular between Kowloon City Ferry Pier and Shun Lee.
  • TBC: Extended to Shun Tin.
  • 24 August 2003: Non-peak hour trips were changed to U-turn back to Shun Tin after Kowloon City Roundabout, omitting Ma Tau Chung Road, Mok Chong Street, Ma Tau Kok Road and Kowloon City Ferry Pier.
  • TBC: Service was reduced to peak hour service only, with a new short-working trip between Shun Tin Estate and MTR Choi Hung Station as an auxilary service to Route 54M.
  • 21 January 2007: All departures to Shun Tin detoured via Ping Shek Public Transport Interchange 1/F podium of Ngau Chi Wan Bus-Bus Interchange.[2]
  • 21 December 2014: The Choi Hung Station shortworking trips were independently numbered as 49M.
  • 19 January 2020: AlipayHK "Easy Go" payment was accepted.[3]
  • 14 February 2020: Discounted amount of interchange concession with MTR at Whampoa Station/Hung Hom Station was increased to $1 following the opening of Tuen Ma Line Phase 1.[4]
