Minibus deployments[]

According to Transport Department's Schedule of Services, this route is served by a total of 11 minibuses, including 1 19-seater minibus, and has a total capacity of not less than 384 passengers per direction during the busiest hour.

The third generation Toyota Coaster diesel minibuses registered between 1996 and 1997 were once the main fleet of this route (there was only one 2000 4th generation Toyota Coaster with the plate number JY2086 which only served on this route during peak hours), and thus the vehicles on this route was more older then the same series Kowloon Routes 8/8S, which made it one of the "retirement routes among Kowloon Urban GMB routes.

Until May 2013, the 4th generation Toyota Coaster (most of the vehicle was changed as the newest diesel minibuses) from King On Transportation's New Territories Route 313 were shifted to this route to replace part of the third generation Toyota Coasters registered between 1996 and 1997. In mid-2014, the newest 6th generation Toyota Coaster diesel minibuses joined this route to replace the 3rd generation minibuses, and the 7th generation Coaster diesel minibus joined this route on 2017 to replace the fourth generation minibuses sold from Route 313.

Currently Kowloon Routes 3 and 8 series under Hop Fat Light Bus have a total of 42 Toyota Coaster diesel minibuses, including 14 16-seater minibuses and 28 19-seater minibuses.

Ridership[]

The operator of Hop Fat Light Bus Tse Chuk Yu mentioned that this route was one of the minibus routes incurring serious losses, with the daily passengers capacity being just only 50% or under.[21]

Related incidents[]

Service licence problems[]

  • 1 September 1984: The restricted area permit validity period of this route, as well as Routes 4 and 8 was full, but the operator failed to renew in time, causing the forced suspension of 10 minibuses on these 3 routes which lasted at least 3 days.[22]
  • 31 October 1988: The Passenger Service Licence valid period of this route, as well as Routes 4 and 8 was full, but the operator failed to show up to apply for renewal of licence, causing the forced suspension of 14 out of 21 minibuses on three routes. The driver deputy later reported to the Police and Transport Department.[23]

Traffic accidents[]

  • 9 November 2014: At around 7:20am, a Tai Kok Tsui-bound Toyota Coaster (SU6599, 6DS) was suspected to have run the red light and hit the taxi along Austin Road westbound at the intersection between Canton Road and Austin Road. The minibus stopped only after hitting the safety barriers, the taxi also slipped forward to Canton Road southbound, reuslting in the injuries of two drivers and the taxi passenger. The incident was also recorded and uploaded to the social media by a netizen.[24][25]

EDS mistake incidents[]

  • 1 November 2017: The first 7th generation diesel-powered Toyota Coaster 19-seater minibus (VC2974 7DL) entered service on that day. But spelling mistakes were found on its electronic destination sign, with "TAI KOK TSUI" being mistakenly spelt as "TAI KWOK TSIU"[26]. The erroneous spelling "TAI KOK TSIU" still existed after the first correction, and the correct spelling "TAI KOK TSUI" only appeared after the second correction.
