Due to the Central Kowloon Route project, the section of Saigon Street west of Canton Road is converted to one-way westbound. To Kwa Wan-bound trips are rerouted to head to Jordan Road directly and omit Ferry Street, Saigon Street and Wai Ching Street until further notice.[1]

The Kowloon Green Minibus (GMB) Route 26 is operated by Kellis Limited (Passenger Service Licence (PSL) No. 9170C). It runs between To Kwa Wan (Chi Kiang Street) and Kowloon Station, via Hung Hom Road Industrial Area, Laguna Verde, Hung Hom Bay, MTR Hung Hom Station and Jordan Station (Jordan Road).

The operator has set up a Facebook page for Route 26 series.

History[]

  • 26 August 1994: The Transport Department invited opened tenders for a total of 21 green minibus (GMB) routes in a set of 8, in which this route was grouped together with Route 31S. [2]
  • 25 January 1996: Route 26 entered service, running between Hung Hom (Sung On Street) (Peninsula Square) and Jordan (Wai Ching Street)
  • End of 1996: Jordan terminus was relocated to Man Wui Street.
  • In 1997: Terminus was extended from Hung Hom to To Kwa Wan (Chi Kiang Street).
  • 6 January 2002: Jordan terminus was extended to Kowloon Railway Station. [3]
  • Unknown: A new "Express trip" running between To Kwa Wan (Chi Kiang Street) and Hung Hom Station omitting Hung Hom Bay was launched.
  • 7 September 2009:Rerouted via Yan Yung Street after Hung Lok Road for Kowloon direction, omitting Hung Lai Road. [4]
  • 9 July 2017: Short-working trips between Laguna Verde and Hung Hom Station was independently numbered as 26W. [5]
  • August 2017:
    • To Kwa Wan-bound minibuses were changed to go straight after arriving at the intersection of To Kwa Wan Road and Chi Kiang Street, then detour via Cheung Ning Street and Sheung Heung Road towards southbound To Kwa Wan Road before returning to Chi Kiang Street terminus. [6]
    • The past unofficial two-way section fare from To Kwa Wan to Whampoa was officially implemented.
  • 30 August 2017: A new section fare of $3.5 from To Kwa Wan to MTR Whampoa Station was introduced following the cancellation of Route 26M, and passengers paying with Octopus card have to press the section fare button on the fare processor to enjoy the section fare.
  • 21 May 2018: Detoured via Hotel Icon on Science Museum Road on Monday to Friday AM and PM peak hours, which was a trial arrangement that was terminated 3 months later.
  • 12 February 2020: Discounted amount of interchange concession with MTR at Whampoa Station/Hung Hom Station was increased to $1 following the opening of Tuen Ma Line Phase 1. [7]
  • 25 June 2021: Real-time Arrival Information System was introduced to this route.[8]
  • 2 January 2022: The interchange concession amount with MTR was unified to 30¢. [9]
  • 27 January 2024: A $1.0 (Adult/Student Octopus)/$0.5 (Child Octopus) interchange concession with KMB Route W4 was introduced, with the concession period lasting until 29 December 2024.

This route also has a special trip numbered 26F to and from the West Kowloon Cultural District: Operating from Jordan Road near 41 Pilkem Street to West Kowloon Cultural District, which only serves during special events and festivities. Minibus interchange concessions[]

Passengers paying the full fare when boarding on this route bound for To Kwa Wan and using the same Octopus cardto interchange to Route 26A bound for Whampoa Garden can just pay the $1.0 fare difference for the second leg.

Passengers paying the full fare or a $6.5 section fare for Kowloon Station direction, interchanging to Route 26 departures bound for To Kwa Wan detouring via West Kowloon Cultural District and paying the $5.0 section fare can enjoy a fare reduction of $2.0 for the second leg.

Passengers paying the full fare or a $6.5 section fare for Kowloon Station direction, interchanging to Route 26A bound for Tsim Sha Tsui paying the full fare or the $6.4 section fare can just pay the $1.0 fare difference for the second leg.

Passengers interchanging to Route 26H from this route bound for Kowloon Station can enjoy a fare discount of $3.8.

According to Transport Department's "Schedule of Services", this route, together with routes 26W and 26X served by a total of 20 of 16-seater minibuses. Above these routes have a combined carrying capacity of not less than 160 passengers per direction during the busiest hour.

This route has all 16-seater minibuses until 2019. This route added 19-seater minibuses after operated 26H. When finished operating 2 series, it has got half of these minibuses transferred to that series of route, this route that increased another 16-seater buses.

Currently, this route together with Routes 26A, 26H, 26W, 26X and CX1 uses total of 22 minibuses, including 13 16-seater minibuses and 9 19 seater minibuses. List:

Ridership[]

After MTR Kwun Tong Line Extension opened the traffic, this route was lost some passengers running from Whampoa and Hung Hom Station or Jordan. To extend the new passengers volume, this route started detouring Sheung Heung Road from 2017; In 2020, Kowloon GMB Route 6 due to after Chit Fai Motors closure, some passengers from Whampoa to Austin Road will board on this route, the passengers capacity was rebounded.

The Transport Department investigated the service level at Chi Kiang Street and Kowloon Station in 9 January 2018 AM and PM peak hours. The result showed that the operator's departure headways in related time period is more than Schedule of Service, the average waiting time is about 6 - 7 mins.[21]

Related incidents[]

  • 18 March 2014: Around 00:00, a minibus (DJ1657) was parking at To Kwa Wan (Chi Kiang Street) Minibus Terminus was broken the window by two men, the suspect people escaped afterwards. The minibus driver drove the minibus via Laguna Verde Avenue in last day afternoon, quarrelled with one of the male due to the driving problems, was bruised by opposite side called another 3 people. Afterward the police suspected the accusation with criminal intimidation, criminal damage and attack, to catch four males with triad background. [22]

Remarks[]

  1. Although using vehicles with different Passenger Service Licence numbers may violate the operating conditions, the Transport Department rarely pays such attention.
  2. Numbers placed after the model Toyota Coaster (if any) are only used within the transport enthusiasts, others (including the industry) does not use such names.
  3. The 5LS2 was originally a vehicle on Ming Wai Public Light Bus's New Territories Route 75 fleet, sold to Kellis in May 2020, until November 2021 before retirement.
  4. The 1dt generation was originally a vehicle from Southern District Community Association fleets, and was later changed to serve on PLB Northern Island Trunk Route fleets until later before retirement.

  6. If a wheelchair is used, the front seat must be folded to avoid overloading.
