Kam Tin (錦田) is generally is referred as a urban-rural continuum in the eastern part of Yuen Long District, ranging from Ha Ko Po Tsuen to Muk Kiu Tau Tsuen, Mo Fan Heung to Kam Sheung Road Station, geographically located between Yuen Long Town (West) and Pat Heung (East).

History[]

Kam Tin is located on a plain, suitable for farming, and has a long history. People have settled here as early as the Northern Song Dynasty. It was called "Sham Tin" (岑田) at that time, and it was renamed "Kam Tin" at the end of the Ming Dynasty.

Kam Tin is not only an important agricultural area in Yuen Long District, but also a cultural resort, and many old buildings are preserved. Kat Hing Wai and other places have long been tourist attractions, Shui Tau Tsuen "Yi Tai Study Hall" has been rated as a statutory monument, and the town centre still retains the township characteristics.

The main road within Kam Tin is Kam Tin Road, linking Yuen Long Town and Pat Heung. Kam Sheung Road was opened to traffic in 1962, branching off from the road south of Kam Tin Public Mung Yeung School, connecting the villages in the southern part of Pat Heung. Since then, the speed of development of Kam Tin's transport and road network has been much slower than that of other parts of Yuen Long.

It was only in the 1990s the government planned to build Route 3 and the KCR West Rail, together with corresponding infrastructure projects, such as the Kam Tin River improvement project and the construction of the Kam Tin Bypass, etc., which were completed and put into use one after another, and the traffic in the Kam Tin area was gradually improved.[1]

Street Structure[]

The main road in the Kam Tin area is Kam Tin Road, which is also known as the "Kam Tin Main Road" due to its superior status. The highway has been restructured many times, and now it ends at the intersection of Au Tau in the west and Pat Heung Sheung Tsuen in the east, passing through Kam Tin City and the northern part of Pat Heung.

Kam Sheung Road was opened to traffic, connecting the south of Pat Heung from the east of Mung Yeung School, and now leads to Kam Sheung Road Station Public Transport Interchange.

The Kam Tin entrance and exit of Tsing Long Highway, Route 3 is located east of Ko Po Tsuen, with KMB Routes 68E and 251M connect to Route 3 via this branch road.

Kam Sheung Road Station Public Transport Interchange was opened in December 2003 in conjunction with the opening of the KCR West Rail, becoming the only public transport interchange in Kam Tin. The government has also improved the roads around Kam Tin, but public light buses are not allowed to use the newly built Kam Tin Bypass and Kam Ho Road, but can only use Kam Tin Road and Kam Sheung Road.

Rural roads north of Kam Tin River connect to San Tam Road or Kam Tin Bypass.
