The New Territories Bus Route T277 is operated by Kowloon Motor Bus (KMB). It runs between Sheung Shui and Lam Tin Station, directly heading to Tolo Highway and Tate's Cairn Tunnel after passing through Fanling South (Pak Wo Road) connecting Kowloon Bay Business Area and Kwun Tong Business Area.

Route T277 was introduced to relieve the congestion on the East Rail Line, and currently serves Lam Tin Station and Sheung Shui respectively during morning and evening peak hours from Mondays to Fridays.[1]

History[]

Introducing background[]

A paper submitted to the Legislative Council by the Transport and Housing Bureau on 25 February 2014 shows that the MTR has been overestimating its train capacity by more than 40% for many years; according to the latest estimate, the East Rail Line is already at 100% (full) capacity[2][3]. Following the release of the report, a number of Legislative Council members criticised the Government's "Using railways as the backbone of HK's public transport system" for overloading the railway system and called for additional bus routes to relieve the traffic.

The North District Council has been urging the Transport Department to increase bus services to the urban areas to relieve congestion on the MTR East Rail Line, but to little avail. It was not until 30 July 2014 that the Transport Department wrote a letter stating that in order to alleviate the high occupancy rate of trains on the East Rail Line during the morning peak hours, KMB planned to operate three express routes from North District and Tai Po to urban Kowloon, including T270, T271 and T277, on a trial basis for four months during the morning peak hours in late August. However, the Tai Po District considers that the fare of T271 was too high and would not be considered for the time being.

Once the Routes T270 and T277 were approved by the District Council, KMB launched a publicity campaign by designing a "Sleeping Beauty" poster[4] to promote the speed and comfort of the two routes, posting it at various bus stops in Sheung Shui, Fanling and Tsim Sha Tsui East, and producing an Announcement of Public Interest.

To mark the occasion, KMB named the launch day as "T-Day" and arranged for Deputy Managing Director and Director of Corporate Affairs to visit the Sheung Shui Bus Terminus, and issued a press release on KMB's website describing the first day of operation.[5]

Route change history[]

  • 25 August 2014: Route T277 came into service, initially running one-way from Sheung Shui to Lam Tin Station.[6][7]
  • 5 September 2015: Estimated Time of Arrival enquiry service was introduced on this route.[8]
  • 12 September 2016: Monday to Friday evening peak return services were introduced, running from Lam Tin Station to Sheung Shui via Kwun Tong Business Area and Kowloon Bay Business Area, via Wah Ming, Pak Wo Road, Choi Yuen Road and Jockey Club Road (Tsui Lai Garden) within North District and provided interchange concessions with a number of North District intra-district routes. [9][10]
  • 1 July 2017: To tie in with the renewal of KMB's franchise, a half-fare discount scheme for same day return trips on student long-haul routes was introduced.
  • Unknown: A new stop was added at "Ng Uk Village" on Pak Wo Road for Sheung Shui direction.
  • 14 October 2019: Headways were increased to 4 for each direction. [11]

Ridership[]

This route serves deep into the Kowloon Bay and Kwun Tong business areas, saving passengers' time in taking feeder buses or walking. In addition, Routes 277E and 277X do not pass through the housing estates along Pak Wo Road central (including Cheerful Park and Ka Shing Court, etc.), whereas Route 277P has to make a detour via San Po Kong, which has made this route successful in attracting a lot of residents to take the bus. Often, the buses are already full when they leave the Fanling Station stop, and passengers from King Shing Court are unable to board the buses.

As this route is quite popular among the passengers, and the need for commuting between the North District and Kowloon Bay Business Area has increased, the North District Branch of the DAB proposed a motion at the Traffic and Transport Committee meeting of the North District Council in March 2016, suggesting that this route should be provided with an additional return service from Lam Tin to Sheung Shui.[12] The proposal was eventually accepted by KMB and TD for implementation on 12 September 2016.

Anecdotes[]

In the early days, KMB produced a promotional video for this route and T270, and commissioned model Christy Lai to pose for a hard-copy photo of her sleeping on a bus seat for a poster entitled "Dream Journey".[13] The poster was widely displayed at bus stops in Sheung Shui, Fanling and Tsim Sha Tsui, but disappeared after less than a week.
