The New Territories Bus Route T270 is operated by Kowloon Motor Bus (KMB). It runs between Fanling (Cheung Wah) and Tsim Sha Tsui East (Mody Road) during morning peak hours from Mondays to Fridays, via Fanling South, Choi Yuen Estate (Sheung Shui MTR Station) and then via San Tin Highway and Route 3, providing direct express service to the Kowloon Station Commercial and Residential Area and Tsim Sha Tsui, and relieving the congestion on the East Rail Line.

History[]

Introducing background[]

A paper submitted to the Legislative Council by the Transport and Housing Bureau on 25 February 2014 shows that the MTR has been overestimating its train capacity by more than 40% for many years; according to the latest estimate, the East Rail Line is already at 100% (full) capacity[1][2]. Following the release of the report, a number of Legislative Council members criticised the Government's "Using railways as the backbone of HK's public transport system" for overloading the railway system and called for additional bus routes to relieve the traffic.

The North District Council has been urging the Transport Department to increase bus services to the urban areas to relieve congestion on the MTR East Rail Line, but to little avail. It was not until 30 July 2014 that the Transport Department wrote a letter stating that in order to alleviate the high occupancy rate of trains on the East Rail Line during the morning peak hours, KMB planned to operate three express routes from North District and Tai Po to urban Kowloon, including T270, T271 and T277, on a trial basis for four months during the morning peak hours in late August. However, the Tai Po District considers that the fare of T271 is too high and would not be considered for the time being.

Once the Routes T270 and T277 were approved by the District Council, KMB launched a publicity campaign by designing a "Sleeping Beauty" poster[3] to promote the speed and comfort of the two routes, posting it at various bus stops in Sheung Shui, Fanling and Tsim Sha Tsui East, and producing an Announcement of Public Interest.

To mark the occasion, KMB named the launch day as "T-Day" and arranged for Deputy Managing Director and Director of Corporate Affairs to visit the Sheung Shui Bus Terminus, and issued a press release on KMB's website describing the first day of operation.[4]
