The New Territories Bus Route B1 is operated by Kowloon Motor Bus (KMB). It runs between Tin Tsz and Lok Ma Chau Station, via Tin Yiu Estate, Castle Peak Road - Yuen Long and MTR Yuen Long Station, taking San Tin Highway.

Route B1 mainly facilitates passengers in Yuen Long District to cross the border via Lok Ma Chau Spur Line Control Point and Futian Port in Shenzhen. Although this route is connected to the Border Control Point, the Schedule of Routes Order does not classify it as the "New Territories Border Bus Route", but only the "New Territories Bus Route".

In order to avoid passengers going to Tin Shui Wai mistakenly taking shortworking departures to San Shui House, electronic destination signs on the side and rear the bus for shortworking departures alternately displays "Yuen Long" and "B1/San Shui House".

History[]

In order to facilitate the opening of Hong Kong Lok Ma Chau Spur Line Control Station and Shenzhen Futian Port of Entry at 4:00 p.m. on 15 August 2007, Route B1 was put into service at the same time, between Yuen Long East Bus Terminus and Lok Ma Chau KCR Station (after the Rail Merger in December of the same year, the two termini were renamed Yuen Long Railway Station and Lok Ma Chau Railway Station respectively), passing through Castle Peak Road - Yuen Long, Long Tin Road, Tong Yan San Tsuen Interchange and Yuen Long Highway to and from Lok Ma Chau with a fare of $11, with cash two-way section fares and Octopus interchange concessions; KMB also launched a discounted fare of $10, 72 hour return discount and a prepaid return fare for Octopus users.

In terms of bus headways, fares or even the journey times, Route B1 is inferior to the competitor's New Territories GMB Route 75. Passengers who board at Yuen Long Station often take more than half an hour to reach the Lok Ma Chau Port. On the other hand, the passenger volume of Route 277 between Lok Ma Chau Station and Lok Ma Chau Port (connecting to the Lok Ma Chau-Huanggang Shuttle) began to decrease. Finally, KMB cancelled Route 277 on 22 June 2008. This route was extended from Yuen Long Railway Station to Tin Shui Wai Station, and went to and from Yuen Long through Sheung Cheung Wai, Tin Yiu Road, Tin Wu Road and Tin Tsz Estate, and changed the direction of routing along the entire Yuen Long Main Road. The journey time of passengers between Yuen Long Station and Lok Ma Chau was greatly reduced, but the concessionary fare for the whole trip still maintained $10.0, and $9.0 round-trip section fare between Villa By The Park and Lok Ma Chau was extended to the whole of Yuen Long Town, and the concessionary period was remained until 14 August 2009.

After the above changes, the more direct routing can indeed attract more passengers, so the headways were enhanced twice on 15 August and November 2009 respectively, and the fare discount was extended to14 November of the same year, and then KMB even announced the extension of the fare discount until further notice. KMB and many shopping malls under the parent company Sun Hung Kai Properties had held joint promotion activities since 1 October 2010 - Mainland China's "free travel" passengers can ride Routes 76K or 276B with valid travel documents after spending more than 400 Hong Kong dollars in Yuen Long Plaza, Sun Yuen Long Centre, Landmark North (Sheung Shui Bus Terminus) or YOHO Mall; passengers spending more than HK$800 can get two free tickets to facilitate passengers to use the Lok Ma Chau-Huanggang Shuttle Bus services in Lok Ma Chau; this promotion was later extended to 3 December 2012.

The fare for the route was increased in May 2011, and the concessionary fare of this route was also increased, and the discounted amount was further reduced in September. In January 2012, the fare discount for the whole process was cancelled, and only the remaining section fares between Yuen Long and Lok Ma Chau were still provided with discounts until January 2013 when all discounts were completely cancelled.

Bus Deployment Evolution History[]

Bus Deployment Evolution History of Route B1

In the early days of Route B1, a total of 7 scheduled buses were used, including 6 Volvo B9TL 12m (AVBE) and one Enviro500 12 m (ATEU1/MJ2927, the only Euro IV bus at the time). All buses on this route were equipped with luggage racks for the convenience of passengers carrying large luggages. In 2008, the number of scheduled buses were increased to 9, and the type of buses used was also the Volvo B9TL, such as (AVBE54/NA2758).

In 2009, KMB reassigned another Euro IV Enviro500 (ATEU2/NW9459) alongside ATEU1/MJ2927. By 2010, due to the increase in passenger volume, two more Enviro500s (ATEU21/PJ6310, ATEU23/PJ9629) were assigned as well.

In May 2013, an Enviro500 (ATEU22/PJ5733), which was originally a spare bus, was officially assigned to run this route.

In June 2014, six additional 12m buses were sent to this route, initially using the Volvo B9TL 12m (AVBWU), Dennis Trident12m (ATR), Volvo Super Olympian12m (3ASV) and Enviro500 12m (ATE). In August of the same year, six Enviro500 MMC (ATENU) had seats removed near low-floor wheelchair positioning location which were replaced with a luggage rack and were put into service on this route (withdrawn when 12.8m buses equipped with luggage racks and large standing rooms were assigned to the route, with the former's luggage racks removed and seats reinstalled).

Since 21 March 2015, Enviro500 MMC and Volvo B9TL (3ATENU, 3AVBWU) which were 12.8m long were additionally deployed to support this route during weekends and public holidays to alleviate the passenger congestion problem and shorten waiting times. Later, the mass-produced Enviro500 MMC 12.8m (3ATENU3-22) buses purchased by KMB were put into service and were assigned to this route one after another, becoming the first Hong Kong bus route to be solely operated with 12.8m buses. However, all such vehicles have been re-assigned with the same model that was not equipped with luggage racks and its 12m version (ATENU, 3ATENU, the former was re-joined in August 2021, and the latter was re-joined in December of the same year, and the above two models were entirely used from June 2022) and the high-capacity version of the Volvo B9TL 12m (AVBWU).

In July 2022 (when its service was still suspended due to COVID-19 pandemic), all buses on this route were replaced with 12m Enviro500 MMCs that were reassigned from Route 265M.

In January 2023, in response to the reopening of the Hong Kong-China border to non-essential travel, all Enviro500 MMCs assigned to the route were changed to ex-Long Win Bus (LWB) version with luggage racks installed to meet the needs of passengers.

In April 2023, this route was re-joined with a 12.8m bus, using Enviro500 MMC 12.8m (3ATENU).

Ridership[]

The initial ridership of Route B1 line was not satisfactory; after its extension to Tin Shui Wai and straightening routing within Yuen Long Town and providing interchange concessions with most of other routes observing the Yuen Long Main Road, the ridership has steadily improved. Many mainland tourists, even those engaging in cross-border parallel importing, chose to take this route to and from the port, sometimes flooding goods within the compartment, leading to buses skipping stops due to "fake bus full" condition and causing long waiting queues along stops on Yuen Long Main Road, which had caused dissatisfaction.

Due to the lack of space at each stop along Yuen Long Main Road, it is not suitable to separate ordinary passengers and passengers with large luggage from two queues to wait for the bus, KMB has sent extra supervisors to be on duty at the main intermediate stops and Lok Ma Chau Station, responsible for controlling crowds and managing luggage problems, and arranging those who do not carry large luggage to be given priority to boarding. Since February 2015, the bus company has hired out-of-the-war security guards to maintain order at the bus stop along the Yuen Long Main Road and that waiting passengers with heavy luggage will be prevented from boarding by the security guards.

In addition, KMB assigns supervisors to monitor Route B1 every day. When a large number of passengers are on board (especially during weekends and holidays), the amount of buses will be increased according to the actual number of passengers and resources. Except for the spare buses, all buses on Route B1 are equipped with a luggage rack for convenience of passengers to place their luggages.

In 2020, in response to the COVID-19 epidemic and subsequent border closure, border crossing facilities were temporarily suspended, and the service of this route was suspended for nearly 3 years. After the resumption of non-essential border crossings between China and Hong Kong in early 2023, this route was resumed and could still attract boundary-crossing passengers. A month later, the passenger volume has recovered to more than 50%.

According to the Bus Route Planning Programme and other documents, the passenger situation of this route is as follows:

  • 2008: The occupancy rate is about 30%.
  • 2014: The average passenger occupancy rate for the busiest hour is 81%, and the average occupancy rate for non-peak hours is 48%.
  • 2019: The daily average occupancy rate is 76%.

Related Incidents[]

Bus fan incidents[]

  • 1 August 2008: Ming Pao reported a theft case, pointing out that that bus fans would steal bus stop signs or route rollsigns, then openly sell them on online discussion forums. KMB confirmed that the stolen rollsigns include those displayed "H1" and "B1".

Traffic Accidents[]

  • 22 June 2010: At about 10:00 a.m., a Volvo B9TL (AVBE) heading to Tin Shui Wai was at the San Tin Highway interchange overpass in Lok Ma Chau when it crashed into the lorry truck ahead due to inability to brake in time, and eventually the lorry truck crashed into the mud truck, resulting in a three-car collision accident, in which the drivers of the mud truck and the lorry truck were injured.
  • 13 April 2015: At about 8 a.m., an Enviro500 (ATEU22/PJ5733) heading towards Tin Tsz was suspected to be unable to brake in time and crashed onto the rear of the lorry truck at San Tin Highway near Lok Ma Chau. The front windshield of the bus was broken, and 13 passengers were injured.
  • 13 January 2017: At about noon, an 85-year-old woman surnamed Tang took a bus bound for Tin Tsz Estate on the Castle Peak Road - Ping Shan. When getting off at Shui Pin Tsuen, the clothes were clamped by the bus door but the safety system failed to sense the old woman's clothes. The driver continued to drive without noticing it, pulling the old woman down and tossed her legs, and needed to amputate her life. Lam Kwai-fong (林桂芳), a 51-year-old female driver involved, was charged with dangerous driving and causing serious injuries to others. On 18 December of the same year, she was sentenced to nine months in prison and her licence suspended for three years.
  • 13 August 2017: At about 8 p.m., an Enviro500 MMC (ATENU213/SK7938) heading to Tin Tsz Estate was entering Tianbai Road and the junction of Tin Wu Road when it was suspected that the bus could not brake in time and knocked down a cyclist and swept him into the bottom of the car, and then went up the safety island, crashing the railings and traffic lights. The cyclist was seriously injured and sent to the hospital for treatment. Later, during the police investigation of the accident, it was found that the injured person was involved in a drug hiding case in the trial and was suspected that he violated the court's bail conditions and was wanted, and the police subsequently arrested the injured.

Passenger and Bus Captain incidents[]

  • 28 July 2012: A Volvo B9TL (AVBE36/MV6593) which was full of passengers was forced to stop by waiting passengers at Yuen Long Station (North) Public Transport Interchange.
  • 28 December 2014 (the last day of the long Christmas holiday): There were a large number of citizens on that night returning from Futian Port to Hong Kong, leading to crowds at the bus terminus. After the last bus to Tin Tsz Estate left, about 30 passengers still failed to board the bus. After dropping off the passengers at Lok Ma Chau-Huanggang Shuttle Bus Terminus, the Bus Captain planned to return to the Port to pick up the passengers, but some passengers objected and caused a scene, which required the police to be present to mediate. Afterwards KMB added an additional departure to pick up passengers stranded at the Port. Later, the Yuen Long District Council collectively investigated the incident, saying that the incident was a "joke about transportation services in Yuen Long District", and asked to be included in the meeting for discussion, and questioned the Transport Department and KMB.
  • 16 April 2015: At about 10:00 a.m., a 37-year-old driver surnamed Leung drove a Volvo B9TL (AVBE54/NA2758) towards Tin Tsz Estate when a contingent personnel disguised by a passenger found him flirting with a long ruler on the way to the money box and stealing the banknotes in the money box into the uniform pocket. When the bus arrived at "Tin Shui Wai Sports Ground stop, the contingent personnel revealed their identities and asked the captain to stop, and called the Police. The police later investigated on scene and found banknotes with a total value of of HK$30, and subsequently arrested the driver involved. The driver later pleaded guilty to larceny and was sentenced to four months in prison.

Fire incident[]

  • 8 June 2017: At about 1pm, a Neoplan Centroliner (AP55/JT7632) originally scheduled to depart from "Shan Shui House" was found faulty and was about to return to depot. When the bus approached Castle Peak Road near Ma Miu Road, smoke came out from the rear suddenly. The bus then stopped exhausting smoke after the Fire Services was called to the scene, and the incident resulted in no injuries.
