History[]

Commencing background[]

In the 2013-2014 Bus Route Development Programme, KMB proposed to introduce this route on a trial basis to facilitate residents in New Territories North and Sai Kung District to travel between the two places during holidays.[1]

The above proposal was put forward in the Bus Route Development Programme together with the rationalisation of Routes 99 and 299 (i.e. Route 299 would be reorganised as Route 299X via Ma On Shan Bypass and Route 99 would be extended to Heng On). However, this route was the first to be introduced on Christmas Day 2013, while the rest of the two routes were not restructured until the date of implementation on 11 January 2014.

Route change history[]

  • 25 December 2013: Route 99R entered service.[2]
  • 9 November 2014: New stops were added at "Bayshore Towers" on Sai Sha Road for Sai Kung North direction and at "Ma On Shan Town Centre" on Sai Sha Road for University Railway Station direction, no longer running the whole length of Ma On Shan Bypass[Remark 1]; a new section fare from Bayshore Towers to Sai Kung North and from Sai O to University Railway Station was introduced.[3][4]
  • 6 July 2015: A new stop was added at "Mei Tak Street" on Wai Man Road for both directions except for the 07:00 departure from Sai Kung on Mondays to Fridays.[5]
  • 6 July 2015: A new stop was added at "Mei Tak Street" on Wai Man Road for both directions except for the 07:00 departure from Sai Kung on Mondays to Fridays.[6]

  • 20 June 2020: The "Nai Chung" bus stop for Sai Kung direction was relocated to southbound Sai Sha Road opposite to Sai O Village and no longer detoured via the temporary terminus. The arrangement was originally effective until 6pm on 31 October 2021, which was later extended to 6pm on 13 March 2022[8][9][10] and eventually relocated permanently to southbound Sai Sha Road off Nai Chung Village.[11][12]
