Ridership[]
This route eliminates the inconvenience of interchanging at the Sai Kung Bus Terminus for rural visitors and is often fully loaded, making it difficult for passengers to board the bus at intermediate stops.
Based on information from previous Bus Route Planning Programme (BRPP) and other related documents, the patronage of this route is as follows:
- 2017: The occupancy rate is about 87% during the busiest hour.
- 6 September 2020: A field survey conducted at Sai Kung North showed that 18 passengers alighted at the stop between 8am and 8pm and no passengers boarded the bus.[17]
- November 2020: The average occupancy rate when leaving Sai Kung Terminus in the direction of Wong Shek Pier was 35.4%.[18]
Related Incidents[]
Traffic Accidents[]
- 8 September 1991: A Dennis Jubilant (N270/CP3392) arrived at Choi Hung Bus Terminus and hit two girls who were crossing the road, killing one of them and injuring the other in the face.[19]
- 8 April 2001: At around 6pm, a Leyland Olympian (BL94/DG660) heading towards Diamond Hill MTR Station collided with an out-of-control private car crossing the lane at Hiram's Highway near Pak Sha Wan, killing one and injuring 28.[20]
- 12 November 2006: At around 5pm, a Wong Shek Pier-bound Dennis Dragon (ADS) collided with a runaway motorcycle crossing the opposite lane on Pak Tam Road near Uk Tau Tsuen, killing the motorcyclist.[21]
Suspected Window Dressing[]
- 12 April 2020: Some netizens found that a bus on Route 94 arrived at Sai Kung Bus Terminus and left for a period of time before the signage displayed the destination information of this route, which was in the form of a "phantom bus" that re-entered Sai Kung Bus Terminus to carry passengers to Wong Shek Pier, deliberately avoiding this route's main service area of Diamond Hill and Choi Hung, taking the opportunity to earn a higher amount of money at a lower operational cost, which was being criticised for being a suspected window dressing.[22]
Free Ride Days[]
- 3 October 2021: KMB collaborated with WeLab Bank, a local virtual bank, to organise a free ride day, offering unlimited free rides on this route for the whole day.[23] In anticipation of the heavy traffic on this route, KMB arranged for the route to be switched to a two-bus lane at the bus terminus at Diamond Hill Station (i.e. the existing bus stops of Routes 82P, 82X, 84M, 85M and 286M).[24] Using the vehicle wave strategy, over 50 double-decker buses were deployed, with an average of 3–5 minutes for a bus to depart, although full buses still occurred from time to time.
- 26 December 2021: KMB partnered with YAS Micro Insurance, a local start-up insurance technology company, to organise a "Free Ride to Countryside Day" with unlimited free rides on this route throughout the day.[25][26] On the same day, the route was re-routed from the bus terminus at Diamond Hill Station to a driveway that could accommodate two rows of buses.[27]
- 26 March[28] and 7 May 2023[29]: In order to share KMB's achievements of "solar-powered double-decker buses" in reducing carbon emissions and saving energy, KMB once again held free ride day with passengers eligible for free rides on departures operated by the "Solar-powered theme bus" (ATENU1326/VG6020).
Weather Conditions[]
- 10 October 2021: As Tropical Cyclone "Lionrock" gradually moved away from Hong Kong on that day, and the Observatory replaced the signal from No. 8 Southeast Gale or Storm Signal to Strong Wind Signal No. 3. Due to road conditions and safety reasons after the storm, KMB sent a Volvo B7RLE single-deck bus to run this route, making it a "single-decker" special sight, attracting many bus fans to take photos along the way. Also, the frequency of the route on that day was reduced to 30 to 50 minutes.
