It runs between Tseung Kwan O (Choi Ming) and Shek Mun Estate, via Tseung Kwan O Town Centre, taking the Tseung Kwan O Tunnel, Kwun Tong Bypass, Tate's Cairn Tunnel to and from Siu Lek Yuen and Yuen Chau Kok, which operates only during peak hours on weekdays.
History[]
Opening background[]
The Transport Department proposed in the 2018-2019 Bus Route Planning Programme to introduce a route between Wu Kai Sha Station and Choi Ming, which will be open in both directions during peak hours from Monday to Friday. For the first shift, the operator is planned to be determined through bidding and is expected to be put into service in 2019. However, the route headway is less, and the route is Meandering: in Tseung Kwan O, Route 798 serves multiple districts in Sha Tin, it goes through Shek Mun, City One Shatin and other places. District councilors requested to increase the frequency of services, "separate services" from north to south in Tseung Kwan O district, cover Tsui Lam, straighten the Shatin alignment, etc.[1][2]
In response to the opinions of the District Council, the Transport Department divided the above routes into two in the "2020-2021 Bus Route Planning Program": after the route from Choi Ming passes through Tseung Kwan O Town Centre, it would take the Tseung Kwan O Tunnel and Tate's Cairn Tunnel to and from Siu Lek Yuen, Yuen Chau Kok in Sha Tin, with Shek Mun Estate as the terminus; route connecting Ma On Shan It runs from Hong Sing Garden via Po Lam, Hang Hau to A Kung Kok and Ma On Shan, maintaining Wu Kai Sha Station as the terminus. Both services operate in opposite directions in the morning and afternoon from Monday to Friday, providing a total of 4 service departures from Tseung Kwan O District and 4 service departures from Shatin District. Some council members debated whether splitting the route would disperse resources or improve operational efficiency. They also requested that the service scope of the route be reorganized with Route 798, and that the route from Cai Ming to Shuo Mun Village should be detoured through Wong Ni Tau, Yincheng Street wait. Regional organizations also questioned that the passenger base of the route may not be sufficient, and the route has not yet addressed the needs of commuters going to Tseung Kwan O Industrial Estate or the industrial areas around Yuen Shun Wai and Shek Mun.[3][4][5][6]
After years of discussions and tendering procedures, the Transport Department revealed in June 2022 that KMB had won the operating rights for the new route.[7]The new route's fare was as low as $8.5, and KMB promotes it as a "great value new experience" and the price raised eyebrows and also raised questions about the profitability of the route.[8]
In the afternoon of the route's opening the day before, KMB dispatched two buses on Routes 90 and 97 with whole-body advertisements printed on them and parked them at Hang Hau Station and Wu Kai Sha Station, check-in props and souvenirs were distributed at the same venue to promote the new route "連接兩大轉車站[Remark 2]" and "貫通新界東[Remark 3]" to the public. However, the bus parked at Wu Kai Sha broke down and left at around 5 pm under the guidance of a construction vehicle. It did not stay until 6 pm as stated in the prior press release.[9][10]
