The New Territories Bus Route 86 is operated by Kowloon Motor Bus (KMB). It runs between Wong Nai Tau and Mei Foo, via Kwong Yuen Estate, Yuen Chau Kok, Shatin Central, Sun Tin Wai Estate, Lion Rock Tunnel, Tai Wo Ping, Shek Kip Mei, Sham Shui Po and Cheung Sha Wan.

History[]

Early Years[]

  • 10 December 1979: Route 86 was put into service, running between Wo Che and Cheung Sha Wan via Tai Po Road at that time.[1]
  • 3 June 1980: In conjunction with the closure of Shatin Bypass, the return journey was diverted via Lek Yuen Street, Wo Che Street and Yuen Wo Road.
  • 7 May 1982: In line with the reorganisation of the route after the first phase of electrification of the Kowloon-Canton Railway (now known as the MTR East Rail Line), the route was extended and changed to run between Siu Lek Yuen and Lai Chi Kok; However, as the travelling distance exceeds the 15km threshold of the Maximum Permissible Fare, the fare was increased to $1.5.[2]
  • 18 May 1983: In line with the development east of Shing Mun River, the driving routes in Sha Tin District were changed:
    • Both directions were diverted to a section of Tai Chung Kiu Road outside Jat Min Chuen, as well as Ngan Shing Street, Chap Wai Kin Street and Ngau Pei Sha Street.
  • 26 July 1984: Diverted via Un Chau Street and Hing Wah Street for Lai Chi Kok direction, omitting Yen Chow Street.
  • 19 February 1980: Routing within Sha Tin was amended to tie in with the commissioning of Route 86A:
    • No longer observed the section of Tai Chung Kiu Road other than the section outside Jat Min Chuen;
    • Detoured via Yuen Chau Kok Bus Terminus for both directions.
  • 4 August 1985: Diverted via Sha Tin Central for both directions and no longer observed Sha Tin Rural Committee Road and Tai Po Road - Sha Tin:[3]
  • To Mei Foo: The route was diverted via Tam Kon Po Street, Sha Tin Centre Street, Pak Hok Ting Street and Sha Tin Centre Street;
  • To Siu Lek Yuen: The route was diverted via Sha Tin Centre Street, Sha Tin Central Bus Terminus, Sha Tin Centre Street and Wang Pok Street.
  • 23 May 1986: The routing between Sha Tin and Kowloon was amended to tie in with the introduction of KMB's Route 86B:
    • The route was diverted via Lion Rock Tunnel Road, Lion Rock Tunnel, Cornwall Street and Nam Cheong Street for both directions, no longer observing Tai Po Road and the original service there was replaced by Route 86B.
  • 1 July 1989: Extended from Siu Lek Yuen to Wong Nai Tau, and the full fare was raised again as the travelling distance exceeded the 18km threshold of the "Maximum Permitted Fare", but in order to minimise the inconvenience to the passengers, a section fare was introduced from Hang Seng School of Commerce to Mei Foo.
  • 22 April 1996: Air-conditioned bus service was introduced.

After the Millenium[]

  • 18 August 2002: Both directions were diverted via Lung Cheung Road in lieu of Cornwall Street and Waterloo Road.[4]
    • Bus stops at "Phoenix House", "Beacon Heights" and "Chak On Estate" were added for both directions; whereas bus stops "Chak Yan Centre", "Shek Kip Mei Park", "Ede Road" and "Moonbeam Terrace" (to Wong Nai Tau) and "Kent Road" (to Mei Foo) were cancelled.
  • 19 October 2002: Interchange concessions with various Lion Rock Tunnel routes were introduced.[5]
  • 28 February 2011: Air-conditioned bus service was enhanced.
  • 25 September 2011: Upgraded to full air-conditioned service.[6]
  • 27 June 2015: Estimated Time of Arrival Enquiry System was introduced on this route.[7]
  • 15 August 2015: A new en-route stop at "Wan Tin House Pak Tin Estate" (now Shui Tin House Pak Tin Estate) was added for Wong Nai Tau direction.[8]
  • 1 July 2017: A new section fare from Shatin Central to Wong Nai Tau was added.

Bus Deployment Evolution History[]

Bus Deployment Evolution History of KMB Route 86

When this route was first introduced, it was served by Dennis Jubilant (N) and Leyland Victory II (G). In 1985, all the former were transferred to Kwun Tong Depot, and were replaced by Leyland Olympian9.6m (BL) (as buses longer than 11.3 metres could not enter or leave the Siu Lek Yuen Bus Terminus at that time), and 11 metres tri-axle buses were introduced in 1989 after the extension of the route to Wong Nai Tau, and the buses used in the peak hours were MCW Metrobus 11m (S3M) and Dennis Dragon 11m (S3N).

In 1996, air-conditioned buses were added to this route, with Dennis Dragon (9.9m ADS, 11m AD) and Volvo Olympian 11m (AV, including AV143/GX9743, which had been scheduled buses for this route since its introduction and until its retirement) as the main buses, and some of the non-air-conditioned scheduled buses were replaced by Dennis Jubilant in 1997. In 1997, after the retirement of the Leyland Victory II, all routes were replaced by 11-metre tri-axle buses.

As of 2011, there was still one non-air-conditioned scheduled bus (Volvo Olympian 11m S3V1/GK2508) on this route.

On 25 September 2011, the route was converted to full air-conditioned service and the only remaining non-air-conditioned bus was replaced by a Volvo Super Olympian 12m (3ASV161/KC7800), which was the first time that a low-floor bus was introduced as a scheduled bus on this route.

The low-floor buses on this route were replaced by Dennis Trident 12 metres (Template:BMKN/HZ7433) in October of the same year, Enviro500 12 metres (ATE32/KZ9147 in 2012, and ATE3/KY3126 in November 2013, and Lai Chi Kok Depot's Scania N113 11.5 metres (AS, and there were several scheduled buses serving on this route before retirement)). It was then reassigned back to use Volvo Olympians but was later replaced by Enviro500 (ATE) by 2015. in February 2016 the entire route used low-floor and straight-staircase buses.

In June 2016, Lai Chi Kok Depot (L) deployed 4 Volvo B9TL 12m (AVBE), originally from K, on this route, but this was reverted back later.

In October 2019, three Enviro500 (ATE) buses from Lai Chi Kok Depot (L) were converted to Euro IV versions of the same bus (ATEU, rejoined in January 2022 and withdrawn again eight months later).

In October 2020, Sha Tin Depot (S) added Volvo B9TL 12m (AVBWU) on this route to replace some of the original Enviro500s (ATE, ATEU).

In February 2021, in response to the implementation of e-payment system, Sha Tin Depot (S) changed to deploy Enviro500 MMC 12m (ATENU) on all routes.

In September 2022, Lai Chi Kok Depot (L) changed to deploy Volvo B9TL 12 metres (AVBWU) for the entire route.

In late October 2022, Sha Tin Depot (S) deployed Enviro500 (ATEE) buses on this route.

Ridership[]

This route has to cross the Shing Mun River twice for both round trips within Sha Tin District, which is very meandering for passengers for Shing Mun River East. There is also Route 72 in Sha Tin Central, which takes the more direct routing via Tai Po Road to and from Sham Shui Po, thus diluting the source of passengers.

According to the Bus Route Planning Programme and other documents, the ridership of this route is as follows:

  • 2014: The average occupancy rate during the busiest hour was 74%, while the average occupancy rate during the off-peak period was 31%.
  • 2016: The peak hour occupancy rate is about 70%, with a maximum occupancy rate of 75%.[9]
  • 2021: The average occupancy rate during the busiest hour was 66%.

Related Incidents[]

Traffic Accidents[]

  • 6 March 1981: At 11:30 p.m., a Cheung Sha Wan-bound Leyland Victory II (G238/CJ3284) was travelling along Tai Po Road opposite the Shatin Hotel when the driver saw a lorry run out of control and cross the line, but was unable to avoid it and had to stop and collide with it head-on. The two vehicles were seriously damaged, resulting in a total of six injuries.[10][11]
  • 6 July 1987: At 12:45 p.m., a Mei Foo-bound Leyland Victory II (G210/CH1729) travelling along Tai Po Road reached a bend near the junction with Keng Hau Road and collided head-on with an out-of-control van. The right side of the bus was hit by the van-type lorry, resulting in a large hole in the body of the bus. Nine people on board the bus were injured and sent to the Prince of Wales Hospital for treatment.[12][13]
  • 18 December 2017: At around 1:00pm, a Mei Foo-bound Enviro500 (ATE32/KZ9147) cut out of the express lane on Cheung Sha Wan Road near Hing Wah Street after stopping and hit a Tuen Mun Central-bound Enviro500 MMC (ATENU224/SL4174) on Route 52X, injuring two females and one male who were sent to hospital.[14]

  • 13 September 2012: At around 4:00 pm, a Volvo Olympian (AV79/GF6351) was driven to Ma On Shan by a 16-year-old rogue bus enthusiast in KMB uniform while parked at the Sha Tin Depot (S). The bus returned to the depot two hours later and the juvenile was later arrested.[17]
  • 20 March 2016: In the afternoon, while a Dennis Trident (ATR456/HS3639) was travelling from Mei Foo to Wong Nai Tau, two bus enthusiasts placed a plastic sign of Route 82X on top of the front of the bus, causing the bus to display two numbers at the same time and misleading passengers. Upon learning of the incident, the bus driver immediately informed the regulator at Wong Nai Tau Bus Terminus, who subsequently confiscated the plastic route sign. KMB replied that it did not sell plastic route signs to the public and advised passengers to exercise self-discipline and not to behave inappropriately to affect other passengers.[18]
