Bus deployment evolution history[]
| Bus deployment evolution history of KMB Route 85 |
|---|
|
Route 85 was initially operated by single-decker buses, and double-decker buses only began to operate since 1 May 1981.[26], mainly being Daimler Fleetline (D), which was later switched to Leyland Victory II (G). Since the deployment of 11-metre tri-axle buses in April 1987, the models were mainly MCW Metrobus (S3M, Gardner D engines) and Dennis Dragon 11m (S3N). By the time air-conditioned service was introduced in 1996, the model was mainly being Dennis Dragon 11m (AD, including AD252/GR3285 which operated on this route for 16 years until being withdrawn on 20 February 2012), followed by Volvo Olympian 11m (AV) after entering the 21st century. Low-floor service was introduced to this route in 2004 with the buses being 4 and Dennis Trident 12m (ATR) originally on Route 170. 2 Volvo Super Olympian (3ASV, including 3ASV141/JZ6467 which is the first Euro III KMB bus) from routes 43B and 904 originally belonged to Lai Chi Kok Depot (L) were added to this route to replace 2 Dennis Tridents on 5 November 2005. After the conversion to full air-conditioned service, the scheduled buses comprised of Volvo Olympian, Dennis Trident and Volvo Super Olympian models. Among which, Dennis Tridents were largely reintroduced in 2013 but was withdrawn in 2015. In June 2016, a Volvo Super Olympian (3ASV373/KP3357) originally from route 80 was added to replace the only Volvo Olympian (AV528/HU9385) on the route, officially converting to full low-floor bus deployments. In August 2016, Volvo B9TL (AVBW, AVBE, all withdrawn) were added to this route to replace some Volvo Super Olympians, and subsequently this route was converted to full straight-staircase bus deployments in 2019. In September 2021, Enviro500 MMC 12m (ATENU, re-added in May 2024, with luxury version from former Long Win Bus (E5T, withdrawn) also added in May the following year) buses were added. In June 2022, Volvo B9TL buses with Euro V engines (AVBWU, re-added in December 2023, withdrawn again in May 2024, re-added again in March the following year) were added. In February 2023, Enviro500 12m (ATEE, withdrawn) buses were added. |

Controversies[]
To meet the passenger demand of Chun Yeung Estate and Choi Wo Court, the Transport Department (TD) and KMB have proposed in the 2022-2023 Bus Route Planning Programme to extend the Fo Tan end of Route 85 to Chun Yeung Estate, and to extend Route 88X to Sui Wo Court by making use of the vacated terminus space while reducing the service of Route 80M to weekday peak hours only. However, when the Shatin Transport (沙田交通關注組), a local organisation, conducted a survey on the patronage of Route 85, it found that about half of the passengers who boarded the bus at Shan Mei Street in the morning were interchanging to Sui Wo Court. A questionnaire survey was conducted to collect the views of 753 members of the public, and as many as 79% of the interviewees were in support of the extension of Route 85 to Sui Wo Court. Fo Tan District Councillor Felix Chow Hiu-laam also considered that the Department should use the same route via Lion Rock Tunnel as an alternative.
Mr Chow and the Concern Group put forward the following counter-proposal: Route 80M should still be curtailed and Route 85 via Tai Wai and Kowloon Tong should be extended to Sui Wo Court, which would not only enhance intra-district connectivity, but also serve as an appropriate compensation for the curtailment of the service of Route 80M; and Route 88X should only be added with a special frequency to Sui Wo Court during peak hours. However, KMB estimated that the demand for travelling between Sui Wo Court and East Kowloon was greater than that to Central Kowloon.[30][31][32]
In 2023, TD and KMB planned to rationalise Routes 85 and 88X in March. Dissatisfied with TD's disregard of public opinion, Mr Chow and the group conducted another questionnaire survey[33][34] and then held a press conference to explain their demands. It was announced at the press conference that they had collected the views of more than 1,600 people, among which more than half of the respondents preferred the extension of Route 85 to Sui Wo Court, and as many as 70% of the respondents thought that TD and KMB should consult the residents again on the route rationalisation.[35][36][37] However, TD still insisted that the effect of extending Route 85 would only be similar to that of Route 80M, which had a low patronage, and continued to ignore the group's claim that Route 85 could provide Sui Wo Court with more usefulness for travelling to places other than Kowloon Tong.[38][39]
Related incidents[]
- 18 February 1983:At about 4:00 p.m., a Kowloon City-bound Leyland Victory MKII (G208/CG9772) travelling downhill along Waterloo Road was stopped at the light at the junction with Cornwall Street when it was hit by a Hong Kong - Guangzhou cross-boundary coach and hit the rear end of the vehicle, resulting in injuries to six passengers.[40]
- 2 November 1999: At 9:30 pm, a driver who had previously received a Safe Bus Captain Award was operating a Volvo Olympian (AV378/HN8007) heading towards Kowloon City Ferry. At the junction of Junction Road and Renfrew Road in Kowloon Tong, he mistakenly pressed the accelerator instead of the brake pedal, killing a female nurse who was crossing the road. The bus then mounted the pavement, demolishing over ten feet of railings before travelling approximately 50 feet further to collide with the gate and flower beds of the Hong Kong International Baptist Church at 300 Union Road, causing severe damage before finally coming to a halt.[41] The bus captain was found guilty of careless driving at Sham Shui Po Magistrates' Court on 15 September 2000 and fined HK$5,000.[42]
- 8 February 2003: At approximately 2:00 pm, a Dennis Dragon (S3N359/GA6027) travelling towards Fo Tan (Shan Mei Street) collided with a motorcycle while ascending the slope near Moonbeam Terrace on Waterloo Road. The motorcyclist sustained minor injuries, but live crabs and fish from the motorcycle were scattered across the road and subsequently crushed by other vehicles.[43]
- 4 March 2008: At 21:18, a Volvo Super Olympian (3ASV141/JZ6467) travelling towards Fo Tan (Shan Mei Street) collided with a bus of the same model (3ASV350/KN3745) on Route 88K heading towards Hin Keng at the junction of Hung Mui Kuk Road and Tin Sam Street in Sha Tin, with the latter suspected to have failed to stop at a red light. A 10-metre-long skid mark was left on the road surface, with 25 people sustaining injuries.[44]
- 29 January 2012: At approximately 4:00 pm, a Volvo Olympian (AV377/HN7699) travelling towards Fo Tan (Shan Mei Street) struck an elderly woman aged around 90 at the junction of To Kwa Wan Road and Lok Shan Road.
