It runs between Sui Wo Court and Kowloon Tong Station, Sha Tin Central, Sun Tin Wai Estate and Lion Rock Tunnel, providing connection services to MTR Kwun Tong Line. It provides outbound and inbound service only during AM and PM peak hours on Mondays to Fridays.

History[]

  • 31 December 1979: The predecessor Route 70M was introduced to service between Lek Yuen and Kowloon Tong MTR Station (with the terminus located off Suffolk Road). [1]
  • 3 June 1980: The return trip was rerouted via Lek Yuen Street, Wo Che Street, Yuen Wo Road, Sha Tin Rural Committee Road and Tai Po Road - Sha Tin to tie in with the closure of Sha Tin Bypass.
  • 21 September 1980: Sha Tin Terminus was relocated to Wo Che.
  • 11 October 1981: Sha Tin Terminus was relocated to Sha Tin Market (at the open car park of the present Sha Tin Market), with the return journey observing Yuen Wo Road, Fo Tan Road and Tai Po Road - Sha Tin. [2]
  • 7 May 1982: Sha Tin terminus was relocated to Sui Wo Court to tie in with the first phase route re-organisation after the electrification of the Kowloon-Canton Railway (now known as the MTR East Rail Line):[3]
    • The route within Sha Tin Town Centre was changed to run in the opposite direction and no longer passed through Sha Kok Street and Tai Chung Kiu Road.

After renumbering[]

  • 9 August 1987: The route numbering was changed to "80M" to standardise the bus route numbering in Sha Tin District to avoid confusion with bus routes in Tai Po and North District. [4]
  • 10 July 1988: Routing was changed within Sha Tin town centre to omit Sha Tin Rural Committee Road and Tai Po Road - Sha Tin: [5]
  • 5 August 1989: Together with Routes 81M and 82X, KMB started to accept Universal Stored Value Tickets for fare payment, being the first batch of KMB routes to accept this payment method. [6]

  • 22 September 2001: Upgraded to full air-conditioned service. [7]

  • 29 January 2018: The last bus time from Kowloon Tong Station was postponed from 00:55 to 01:00. [14]
  • 17 May 2021: No longer observed Shan Mei Street for Sui Wo Court direction with the stop at "Shan Mei Street" cancelled and changed to stop at "Tsung Tau Ha Road" stop on Fo Tan Road. [15]
  • 18 February 2024: Service was reduced to only on Monday to Friday peak hours, with the service time from Sui Wo Court at 07:05 and 07:30, whereas that from Kowloon Tong Station at 18:50 and 19:20. [16][17]

Bus deployments[]

This route is operated by double decker air-conditioned buses from Routes 81K and 280X.

Bus deployment evolution history[]

Bus deployment evolution history of KMB Route 80M

At the beginning of Route 80M, it was operated by Daimler/Leyland Fleetline (D), and the first 12-metre tri-axle bus (MCW Metrobus M1/CN870) was deployed in 1981, which was the first time that this length of bus was used on this route. However, in 1982, due to the extension of the route to Sui Wo Court, due to the narrow passageway of the estate, the route could only be served by buses of 11 metres or less for a long period of time, and the buses were changed to Leyland Victory II (G), and in 1985, Leyland Olympian9.6m (BL) was added to the route.

In 1992, Dennis Dart (AA) single-decker air-conditioned buses were added to the route, followed by Dennis Dragon9.9m (ADS) double-decker buses in 1993, and then all the routes were operated by the same type of buses in 2001 after the conversion to full air-conditioned service.

In 2011, a low-floor service was introduced with a Volvo Super Olympian (ASV6/JX9994), and in 2015, a Dennis Trident (ATS84/KD2869) was added to the route, and the route was low-floor for a while from 10 April of the same year. A short fortnight later, at the end of the same month, one of the Volvo Super Olympian 10.6m (ASV78/LR725) was replaced by a Dennis Dragon 9.9m (ADS193/JA1192). This vehicle was subsequently redeployed in February 2017 and the whole route was officially low-floorised.

In late November 2017, vehicle restrictions were relaxed on this route and permission was granted to operate with 12m buses, which have since appeared from time to time on this route. In July 2019, as the first batch of Volvo Super Olympian 10.6m (ASV1-ASV49) and some of the sub-batches of Dennis Trident 10.6m (ATS51-53, 58, 61, 64-66, 71-72, 74-76, 78, 82, 84-85, 89, 91-100) retired one after another, coupled with the increasingly tight supply of short buses and the need to vacate short buses for routes with service restrictions, the whole route has been changed to be served by Enviro500 12m (ATE), which was the second addition of 12-metre buses after a gap of 37 years, and the whole route has been fully operated with straight-staircase buses.

Starting from September 2021, the Enviro500 12m (ATE) was replaced by the same type of buses with Euro IV engines (ATEU, reintroduced in July 2023) and Enviro500 MMC 12m (ATENU, withdrawn), as the Enviro500 12m (ATE) buses running on this route were withdrawn due to its ageing and the high vehicle breakdown rate.

All scheduled buses were de-scheduled on 21 February 2024 in response to the service curtailment of the route.
