The straight-line distance between the termini at both ends is only 1.3 kilometres and the shortest driving route is only 3.3 kilometres; however, the routing of Route 8 is meandering with a total travelling distance of 11.2 kilometres.

Bus deployment evolution history[]

Bus deployment evolution history of KMB Route 8

In the early days, this route was affected by the narrow bend of On Wan Road turning left from Cheong Wan Road to Hung Hom, no buses with a length of 11m or more can be dispatched, so from the 1900s to the 1990s, Leyland Victory II (G) and Dennis Jubilant (N) were mainly used. After this model was retired, Leyland Olympian9.6m (BL) and MCW Metrobus9.7m (M) were assigned to this route. In 2002 after changing to full air-conditionws service, Dennis Dragon9.9m (ADS) were mainly dispatched on this route.

Low-floor service was introduced to this route in 2002, with Dennis Trident10.6m (ATS) and Volvo Super Olympian10.6m (ASV) being the main vehicles.

As On Wan Road left bend and Cheong Wan Road flyover were reset due to Shatin to Central Link (SCL) project, the intersection is no longer as narrow as it used to be. Double-decker buses such as Volvo B9TL 12m (AVBWU)[17] began to operate on this route as a special sight, followed by Volvo B9TL (AVBE) in September of the same year. In 2016, the short-bodied Volvo Super Olympian (ASV) re-joined this route, and the Dennis Dragon (ADS) and the Volvo Super Olympian 12m (3ASV) were also added later on.

On 6 July 2017, this route became the last serving route for KMB non-low-floor buses.[18]

Euro V Volvo B9TL (AVBWU) buses were added to this route twice at the end of 2017 and in July 2020, but it has been transferred away until it was later rejoined in May 2022. In September 2020, Volvo B9TL (AVBE, formerly 7XX from Long Win Bus, withdrawn) joined this route. In February of the following year, due to the launch of the "e-Pay" electronic payment system, the Euro V Volvo B9TLs (AVBWU) were replaced by Enviro500 MMC 12m (ATENU) and the same model previously owned by Long Win Bus (formerly 95XX) were added as well.

In January 2022, the scheduled buses on the whole route was reassigned with Volvo B9TL 12m (AVBE, withdrawn) and Enviro500 12m (ATEU, withdrawn briefly in February 2023) with the relevant systems installed; in May 2024, Volvo B9TL 12m demonstrator bus (AVG) was even added to this route.

Ridership[]

The terminus at both ends of this route is located in Yau Tsim Mong District, but observing Hung Hom, Ho Man Tin, Yau Ma Tei to and from Kowloon Station and East Tsim Sha Tsui Station is much more meandering than that of Kowloon GMB Route 77M; the section between Tsim Sha Tsui to Ho Man Tin is also affected by the green minibus (GMB) route of the same number and its branch route 8S. As the rail network expands along the route, ridership on the route has since declined.

According to Bus Route Planning Programmes and other documents, the passenger capacity of this route is as follows:

  • 2016: The ridership in the busiest hour is 72%.
  • After the commencement of Kwun Tong Line Extension: the average ridership for the busiest half-hour dropped from 67.5% in January to March 2016 to 61.1% in November 2016.[19]
  • 2019: The ridership for the busiest half-hour was less than 60%, and the ridership for peak hour did not exceed 50%, whereas for that during non-peak hours maintained about 10-20%.[20][21]

A total of 15 people were injured in the two vehicles, including a female passenger on the minibus who died after being sent to the hospital.[22][23]
  • 7 October 1990: A Dennis Jubilant (N246/CN3979) of this route was passing through Nathan Road near Ning Po Street when it collided with a Dennis Dragon (S3N130/DP5512) of Route 42A and a Mitsubishi MK117J (AM) on Route 208. No one was injured.[24]

Last service day for non-low-floor buses[]

KMB ADS Last Day KOW 201707 -2

Crowds of Bus Fans waiting for the bus to arrive at Kowloon Station

The main article of this section is Last Service Day for KMB Whiteboard Buses.

KMB non-low-floor buses commonly known as "whiteboards" (「白板」) were fully retired in 6 July 2017. KMB arranged for one of them (ADS235/JD4215) to run this route that night as a final farewell to the citizens.[18] That day, bus fans were already waiting in line at Star Ferry as early as 3pm. Due to the large number of people, KMB set up another queue line for "Farewell to Non-low-floor Buses" and even at one point cutting the queue.[26]

That night, the last "whiteboard" Dennis Dragon ADS235 ran the 8pm departure of this route from Star Ferry. There were as many as 250 bus fans at the scene, and thousands of others were seen sending it off. The departure of the bus was delayed until about 8:15 pm and arrived at the Kowloon Station Bus Terminus at 9pm. Since then, the "whiteboard" buses has officially become history.[27][28]
