Hong Kong Buses Wiki

The New Territories Bus Route 68A is operated by Kowloon Motor Bus (KMB). It runs between Yuen Long (Long Ping Estate) and Tsing Yi Station, via Ping Shan, Hung Shui Kiu, Lam Tei, Hung Kiu, Tuen Mun Town Centre, Tuen Mun Road, Chai Wan Kok and Tsuen Wan Town Centre, which is the sole franchised bus route connecting Tuen Mun and Tsing Yi Island.

History[]

In response to the opening of the Tai Lam Tunnel, KMB reorganised its bus routes in Yuen Long on 26 May 1998, with Route 68A between Long Ping Estate and Sham Shui Po (Yen Chow Street) via Tuen Mun Road permanently cancelled, and replaced by Route 68M between Long Ping Estate and Kwai Shing Circuit and diverted to run via the Tai Lam Tunnel.[1]

After the implementation of the route rationalisation plan, Yuen Long residents were dissatisfied that the frequency of the re-organised Route 68M was very unstable, with serious lost trips. KMB, under pressure from District Council members, decided to reinstate its original starting point for journeys to/from Yuen Long (West) and Tsuen Wan MTR Station, and at the same time reintroduced the Route 68A, which travelled to/from Long Ping Estate and Kwai Hing MTR Station via Hung Shui Kiu and Tuen Mun Highway to make up for the shortfall in the bus service between Long Ping Estate and Kwai Chung area.

Bus deployment evolution history[]

Bus deployment evolution history of KMB Route 68A

Route 68A travelling towards Long Ping Estate once had to pass through the narrow junction where Wang Tat Road turns left onto Fung Chi Road, which can only accommodate buses of 11.3 metres or less in length. At launch, the entire route was operated by Dennis Dragon 11m (S3N) and MCW Metrobus 11m (S3M) non-air-conditioned buses, marking KMB's final newly introduced fully non-air-conditioned route. The following year, it transitioned to full air-conditioned service, initially using Volvo Olympian 11m (AV) buses with 2+2 seating configurations. In 2002, it exchanged "Silver Pole Dragons" with Route 63M. By 2009, these buses were gradually transferred to urban routes due to age restrictions, replaced by "Yellow Pole Dragons" with 2+2 seating configurations; subsequently, service reverted to using Volvo Olympian buses.

Yuen Long Depot introduced Dennis Trident 10.6m (ATS) low-floor buses in 2012. In September 2013, route adjustments within Yuen Long District lifted vehicle restrictions, enabling the introduction of Enviro500 12m (ATE) and Dennis Trident 12m (ATR) buses to replace existing short-body models, and full low-floor conversion was achieved by 2014. To test selective catalytic reduction (SCR) equipment and enhance carrying capacity, Volvo Super Olympian 12m (3ASV) buses were progressively introduced from 2015. A standard-configuration bus was deployed alongside an SCR-equipped bus for comparative performance evaluation. By mid-2016, Neoplan Centroliner 12m (AP) buses were deployed.

In December 2017, Yuen Long Depot replaced its retiring Neoplan Centroliner (AP) fleet with Dennis Trident (ATR) buses. In February 2018, Enviro500 MMC 12.8m (3ATENU) buses were introduced and from May onwards, identical 12-metre and 12.8-metre buses formally became scheduled buses to replace the original models, with the usage ratio of 12.8-metre vehicles steadily increasing. However, one Enviro500 MMC 12-metre bus was ultimately substituted by a Neoplan Centroliner (AP86/JV8145) bearing a whole-body advertising for a private housing estate in Yuen Long South, which was subsequently withdrawn from service in early September of the same year and replaced by an Enviro500 MMC 12.8m bus (3ATENU71/UE4821).

In January 2020, this route was fully converted to direct-access buses, with high-capacity Volvo B9TL 12m (AVBWU) introduced to replace the remaining Dennis Trident (ATR389/KX1287). From July of the same year, the entire route was operated by 12.8-metre Enviro500 MMC buses equipped with luggage racks.

In July 2021, TSYI resumed dispatching vehicles, replacing two Enviro500 MMC 12.8m buses (3ATENU7/TU7399, 3ATENU15/TU7399) with low-capacity Volvo B9TL buses (AVBWU191/PY7519, AVBWU218/RC6904) replacing two Enviro500 MMC 12.8m units (3ATENU7/TU7399, 3ATENU15/TV3361). Four months later, these were replaced by Enviro500 MMC 12m units (ATENU).

In October 2021, Volvo B8L 12m (V6B) buses commenced operation on this route. In July 2022, this model was redeployed to the newly launched Route 67A and fully replaced by Enviro500 MMC 12m (ATENU) buses. Two months later, the original model was reintroduced to the route, only to be withdrawn again four months subsequently and returned to service in April 2025. From August, Tuen Mun Depot (Yuen Long Sub-depot) (U) deployed the 12.8-metre variant (3ATENU) across its entire fleet and vehicles of the same model fitted with Euro 6 engines (E6X, since withdrawn) were introduced the following March.

In August 2024, some Enviro500 MMC (3ATENU) units were replaced by Volvo B8L 12.8m buses (V6X, since withdrawn).

Ridership[]

According to the Bus Route Planning Programmes and other documents, the ridership of this route is as follows:

  • 2009: The average occupancy rate was 68% before the opening of MTR Kowloon Southern Link.[26] and that after its opening was 48%.[27]
  • 2013: Before the diversion and the withdrawal from Kwai Chung, the average daily patronage was 4,400, with an occupancy rate of 75% during the peakiest hour and 16% during the off-peak hours; only 680 passengers travelled between north of Lam Tei and Kwai Chung.
  • 2016: The occupancy rate was 71% during the peakiest hour and 24% during the off-peak period.
  • 2017: The occupancy rate was 76% during the peakiest hour.
  • 2020: The occupancy rate was 57% in the direction of the urban area and 65% in the direction of Tuen Mun during peak hours.
    • However, the figures were criticised by district councillors as they observed long queues formed at Tuen Mun Road Interchange between 6:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. because each Tuen Mun-bound Route 68A bus only had five to ten seats available when it stopped there and asked the Administration how the figure was obtained.[28]
  • 2023: The occupancy rate was 60% during the peakiest hour.[29]
