Bus Deployment Evolution History[]

Bus Deployment Evolution History of KMB Route 66X

This route was initially served by Dennis Dragon11m (S3N) and MCW Metrobus11m (S3M) 3-axle buses when the route was introduced in 1994, and four Volvo Olympian 11m (AV) buses were used.

In 2000, Volvo Olympian12m (3AV) and Dennis Dragon12m (3AD) were added to the fleet of Route 66X, and after the whole route was converted to a fully air-conditioned service in 2002, all these buses became the scheduled buses of this route. The patronage of this route declined due to the ageing population of Tai Hing Estate, so in 2005 it was replaced by Volvo Olympian (AV) buses from Route 67X and other routes.

Low-floor services were added to this route in 2007, initially with two Volvo B9TL 12m (AVBE16/MT593, AVBE22/MT1951) buses, and it was the latest among all express routes between Tuen Mun and West Kowloon to introduce low-floor buses.

In 2010 and 2012, Scania K310UD 12m (ASU) buses were added to this route twice before it was replaced by Volvo B9TL 12m (AVBWU).

In 2011, Volvo Super Olympian12m (AVW) originated from Route 961 joined this route.

The route was entirely deployed with low-floor and straight-staircase buses in 2014, and in April 2015 the only two remaining Enviro500s (ATE101/LF2791, ATE252/MH139) were replaced by Volvo B9TLs (AVBWU4/PG7809, AVBWU12/PJ4566), formerly part of Route 269B fleet. At the end of the same year the entire route was reassigned with Enviro500 MMC 12m (ATENU) buses with Facelift bodywork.

In November 2016, Volvo B9TL (AVBWU) and MAN A95 (AMNF, later AMNE joined in December 2019 and "Red Bus 2.0" with Gemilang bodywork, the latter was reintroduced in April 2023 with a demonstrator bus AMNF21/VT3317), and was fully reassigned in December of the following year.

In 2020, this route was approved by the Transport Department (TD) to be served by 12.8m buses.

In June 2021, Enviro500 MMC 12m (ATENU) rejoined this route. In August of the same year, a Volvo B8L 12m (V6B176/XE732) was deployed from Kowloon Bay Depot (K) to serve this route. Coinciding with the Tokyo Olympics that year, KMB specially designed a full-body advertisement on a white background to match with the name of the terminus of the route, which was withdrawn in the following year.

Related Incidents[]

Passenger Incidents[]

  • 16 April 2002: At about 3:00p.m., on a non-air-conditioned bus travelling in the direction of Tai Hing on Tuen Mun Road, two boys at the rear of the upper deck of the bus cut the seat cushions and then removed them and threw them out of the window, which was thought not acceptable by a passenger who then alerted the bus captain to report to the Police. The Police boarded the bus at the China Light Building bus stop at Shek Pai Tau Road and arrested the boys. The seat cushions were eventually recovered from a muddy area next to the crash barrier at the junction of Wong Chu Road.

Bus Accidents[]

  • 22 March 2013: At around 1:00pm, a Volvo Super Olympian (AVW2/LF5502) heading towards Tai Hing and a bus of the same model (AVW49/LN7682) on Route 961 crashed into a container truck parked at the side of the road due to a tyre blowout on Wong Chu Road, injuring 27 people.
  • 29 July 2014: 5 people were injured when a Tai Hing-bound Volvo B9TL (AVBWU48/PS8816) crashed into a van in front of it due to mechanical failure at Tuen Mun Road near So Kwun Wat at around 10:00 pm.
  • 3 June 2016: At about 10:00 am, a Tai Hing-bound Volvo B9TL (AVBWU262/RJ5099) was travelling on Cheung Sha Wan Road when it slowed down with the KMB bus due to a bus stop ahead of it. However, the trailing KMB was unable to retract its brakes enough (Volvo B9TL AVBWU333/SW8471 operating on Route 59X) and crashed into the preceding vehicle, resulting in a four-vehicle head-on collision accident. One bus driver and three passengers were injured and were sent to hospital for treatment.
