The New Territories Bus Route 64K is operated by Kowloon Motor Bus (KMB). It runs between Yuen Long (West) and Tai Po Market Station, via Yuen Long Main Road, Au Tau (Pok O Hospital), Kam Tin (Ko Po Tsuen, MTR Kam Sheung Road Station), Pat Heung (Kam Sheung Road), Sheung Tsuen, Kadoorie Farm, Lam Tsuen Wishing Tree, Tai Wo and Tai Po Central.

Excluding the air-conditioned routes introduced in the early 1990s, Route 64K was the first franchised bus route in the New Territories to introduce air-conditioned bus services, and also the last KMB franchised bus route to be operated by single-decker non-air-conditioned buses.

Detailed history[]

Detailed history of KMB Route 64K and its predecessors
  • 1 April 1953: The route's predecessor, Route 23, entered service, running between Yuen Long and Tai Po Market and was operated by 2 buses.[2] It ran through Yuen Long Main Road, Kam Tin Road, Lam Kam Road (Route 1) and Tai Po Road. The Yuen Long terminus at that time was located on-street on Yuen Long Main Road east of Kuk Ting Street; the departure times from Yuen Long were 06:00-18:00 and that from Tai Po were 06:53-18:53 with a frequency of 1-hour intervals.[8]
  • Around early October 1953: KMB reorganised its suburban routes: bus stops that were originally located at section fare points were changed to designated bus stops along the route, and passengers were only allowed to board and alight at designated bus stops.[9] As this involved a wide area, it had to be implemented in phases with the second phase involving routes departing from Yuen Long Market, where this route was included in this phase of implementation.[10]
  • 1 December 1953: The first bus time on both ends were advanced by 20 minutes[Remark 1] with one additional bus operating on the route.[11]
  • January 1954: Due to the reconstruction of Yuen Long Main Road, the bus terminus was relocated to the vacant lot in front of Tai Yuen Restaurant at the intersection of Yuen Long Main Road and Kuk Ting Street (now outside the Bank of East Asia).[12]
  • 1 May 1954: The Yuen Long Main Road project was completed, and the government cancelled the permanent bus terminus originally planned for the vacant lot in front of Tai Yuen Restaurant. The bus terminus was relocated to the westbound lane opposite Yuen Long Public Hospital (now Yau San Street bus stop).
  • 1 November 1955: Luggage and cargo fares were introduced for rural routes. For luggage weighing between 4.5 kg and 22.5 kg, an additional half of the fare would be charged, and for luggage weighing between 22.5 kg and 45 kg, an additional full fare would be charged; goods must be placed in the designated luggage area at the rear of the bus and must not occupy seats.[13]
  • 18 December 1961: Tai Po Market terminus was relocated to Tsing Yuen Street.
  • 21 January 1962: Rerouted via Kam Sheung Road following its opening with the last bus time delayed to 22:30.[3]
  • 3 October 1962: Yuen Long terminus was relocated to outside the KMB Yuen Long Depot (now Yuen Long Plaza bus stop).
  • 25 June 1967: From the morning onwards, KMB provided limited services between 07:00 and 20:00 due to a shortage of staff during the 1967 riots.
  • 15 February 1970: The Yuen Long terminus was relocated from Kik Yeung Road to the new terminus at the intersection of Yuen Long Main Road and Fung Nin Road, which was renamed Yuen Long (West).
  • 18 December 1972: Tai Po Market terminus was relocated from Wai Yan Street to Heung Sze Wui Street.[14]

Route 74/64 after rationalisation[]

  • 16 July 1973: In conjunction with the major reorganisation of KMB routes, the route number was changed to "74" with the number of section fare points being reduced.
  • 13 October 1974: Tai Po Market terminus was relocated to Wai Yan Street.
  • 1 October 1978: The numbering was once again changed to "64".
  • 1 November 1978: Yuen Long (West) terminus was relocated from the junction of Yuen Long Main Road and Fung Nin Road to the new terminus on Kik Yeung Road.
    • Buses towards Yuen Long (West) would turn around at the roundabout at the junction of Yuen Long Tai Yuk Road near the old terminus and return to the eastbound lane, then enter Kik Yeung Road.
  • 19 December 1980: Detoured via northbound On Fu Road, Po Yick Street, Po Heung Street and Nam Shing Street towards Wai Yan Street for Tai Po Market direction with the conversion of On Fu Road into a one-way northbound road.。[15]
  • 12 April 1981: The section fare point at Kam Tin was cancelled.

Route 64K after KCR electrification[]

  • 7 April 1983: With the opening of the new Tai Po Market Station of the Kowloon-Canton Railway:[4]
    • The route numbering was changed to 64K;
    • Tai Po terminus was relocated from Wai Yan Street to Tai Po KCR Station, i.e. the present-day Tai Po Market Station Minibus Terminus;
    • Remained detouring via the area around old Tai Po Market terminus, passing through Wan Tau Street, Heung Sze Wui Street, Po Heung Street, Nam Shing Street, On Fu Road, Wai Yan Street and Tsing Yuen Street in order.
  • 29 June 1983: Rerouted via Road A[Remark 2] and Ting Kok Road off Tai Po Government Offices to facilitate the conversion of that section of Kwong Fuk Road into a one-way westbound road.
  • 27 January 1984: Rerouted via Road D4 (now Po Heung Street and Po Heung Bridge) and Road D1 (now the section of Tai Po Tai Wo Road between Ting Kok Road and Po Heung Bridge) due to the permanent closure of Kwong Fuk Bridge.[16]
  • 1984: The routing at Tai Po Market for Yuen Long direction was simplified after Nam Shing Street:
    • 5 October: Changed to go directly along Tsing Yuen Street to access Po Yick Street;[17]
    • 2 November: Changed to go directly along On Fu Road to access Po Yick Street.
  • 13 March 1985: Due to the demolition of the western section of Kwong Fuk Road (now Tai Wo Estate), the route was changed to the newly constructed Road D5 (now the section of Tai Po Tai Wo Road between Tai Po Fire Station and Shui Wai).
  • 25 September 1985: Rerouted via Lam Kam Road interchange to access Lam Kam Road for both directions with the reconstruction of Tai Po Road - Tai Wo into an expressway (now Fanling Highway).
  • 13 July 1985: Detoured via Tai Po Centre (On Cheung Road and On Chee Road) for both directions.
  • 17 September 1986: To tie in with the construction of the Light Rail Transit (LRT), the route was change to turn right from Yuen Long Main Road to Kik Yeung Road directly without turning around via roundabout.
  • 22 July 1988: Rerouted via Road L1 before returning to Castle Peak Road – Yuen Long after reaching Yuen Long Main Road for Tai Po direction.
  • 25 September 1988: With the opening of the Light Rail and the implementation of the Transit Service Area legislation, passengers were only allowed to board from Yuen Long to Au Tau for Sheung Shui direction, while passengers were only allowed to alight at the section for Yuen Long (West) direction.

Bus deployments[]

Due to the steep and narrow road surface of the section of Lam Kam Road near Ling Wan Temple, this route can only be operated by Enviro500 MMC 11.3m (E6M) buses equipped with tree guards or other bus models with a length of less than 11 metres. If special services do not operate on the section of the Lam Kam Road west of Ng Tung Chai (Pak Ngau Shek), this restriction does not apply, and any buses with a length of 12 metres may be used.

Currently, a total of 24 Enviro500 MMC 11.3m (E6M) buses are assigned to this route as scheduled buses, and buses on this route may be dispatched away to routes 53, 64P, 64S, 65K, 71A, 71K, 72X and 265S.

Bus deployment evolution history[]

Bus deployment evolution history of KMB Route 64K

Due to the narrow road surface of the section of Lam Kam Road near Ling Wan Temple, buses longer than 11 metres are not suitable for use on this road. The sections from Kadoorie Farm to Ling Wan Temple and Pak Ngau Shek have gradients of 1:8 and 1:10 respectively, and the route is often fully loaded, placing high demands on vehicle performance. As a result, the Commer Superpoise MkII was primarily used on this route in the 1950s.[36] From 1 November 1965 onwards[37], various models of Albion single-decker buses were used on this route until the 1980s.

With KMB purchasing more single-decker mid-sized buses and the gradual retirement of Albion 55, KMB thus arranged Mitsubishi MK117J (AM) to operate on this route in 1990, making it the first route in Yuen Long District to have air-conditioned bus service. In the 4th quarter of the same year, double-decker buses appeared on this route for the first time with the addition of a Leyland Olympian 9.7m bus (BL60/DE2817), followed by Leyland Victory II (G) buses in 1991; meanwhile, more Mitsubishi MK (AM) buses were deployed on this route to replace the remaining Albion 55 buses, thereby ending the operations of single-decker non-air-conditioned buses in Hong Kong's franchised bus operations.

The ridership of this route continued to rise year by year and was converted to a full double-decker service in around 2002[Source request]; however, restrictions at Lam Kam Road left KMB only with Dennis Dragon9.9m (ADS) as the main air-conditioned fleets on this route. With the full retirement of Leyland Victory MKIIs, non-air-conditioned trips of this route were changed to be operated by Leyland Olympian9.6m (BL) and MCW Metrobus9.7m (M). Despite Dennis Dragon 11m (air-conditioned AD and non-air-conditioned S3N) and MCW Metrobus (S3M) were legally allowed to enter Lam Kam Road without a Prohibited Zone Permit[Remark 3], KMB thought that the use of these models would cause deformities to the chassis just like buses on Route 51, and thus KMB deployed brand new Volvo Super Olympian 10.6m (ASV) buses instead.[38] However, the slow speed during uphill due to poor performance had led to KMB swapping in Dennis Trident 10.6m (ATS) shortly afterwards.

From 17 September 2014 onwards, two-axle double-decker buses re-appeared on this route with the addition of Enviro400 10.5m (ATSE). In December 2016, all Dennis Dragons (ADS203/JC1749, ADS229/JD2522, ADS235/JD4215) were placed by Dennis Trident (ATS) buses, marking the conversion to full low-floor service. In late February 2018, Dennis Tridents from Tuen Mun Depot (Yuen Long Sub-depot) (U) were swapped away and were replaced by Enviro400 10.5m (ATSE) buses due to the reversion of Route 269M to full short-bodied fleets.

In addition, during the Lam Tsuen Wishing Festival held during the 2011 Lunar New Year, KMB deployed 12-metre double-decker buses to operate this route between Tai Po Market Station and Lam Tsuen as a special service[39]; however, such arrangements were not made again after the launch of Route 63R the following year, until 2017 when 12-metre double-decker buses were once again deployed as additional services.

With the gradual retirement of the second batch of Dennis Trident 10.6m (ATR) buses, in addition to the limited capacity of Enviro400 10.5m (ATSE) buses which would be unable to meet large passenger demand, some of the scheduled buses were swapped with those on Routes 81K and 276 and received 2 Dennis Tridents (ATS) from these 2 routes; meanwhile, Volvo Super Olympian 10.6m (ASV) buses were added to this route after 19 years, but it was only due to the lack of vehicles that led them to become scheduled buses given the poor performance; however, they were withdrawn a month later.

Targeting the retirement waves of vehicles used on this route, in addition to the low capacity of Enviro400 10.5m (ATSE) buses which might cause pressure on this route, KMB thus expressed their interest on deploying Enviro500 MMC 11.3m (E6M) on this route after their introduction to KMB fleet in June 2020. On 14 July 2020, KMB and Transport Department arranged for a test run along Lam Kam Road[40] and after a vigorous test, 11.3-metre buses were approved for operation on this route and 3 Enviro500 MMC 11.3m buses (E6M33/WU7752, E6M42/WU7521 and E6M50/WV1963) were allocated to this route. The model later became scheduled buses on this route, replacing most ageing Dennis Tridents (ATS) and all Enviro400s (ATSE) (the latter was re-added momentarily later). This route instantly became a show-off route from a pension route with an increase in carrying capacity.

The last 3 Dennis Trident 10.6m buses in Hong Kong (ATS148-150) were the scheduled buses on this route before their retirement on 28 October 2020, one of which (ATS149/KU5917) even operated on this route whole day on its last day of service (27 October 2020). The 3 running orders became vacant after their retirement, and was until November 2020 when they were swapped away together with 2 Enviro400 scheduled buses (ATSE40/RW3044, ATSE42/RW3568) by 5 latest batch of Enviro500 MMC 11.3m buses (E6M72-76, among which E6M74-76 were later swapped away by E6M78-80, and E6M79 was later switched to Lai Chi Kok Depot (L)). On 16th of the same month, the models on this route were unified to Enviro500 MMC 11.3m (E6M), and the remaining Enviro400 (ATSE46/RW5136) was also withdrawn. As Lam Kam Road is forbidden to vehicles of length above 11 metres, KMB had to apply for a Prohibited Zone Permit and install tree guards for the 11.3-metre buses on this route.

Ridership[]

Route 64K is currently the sole bus route operating throughout the day between Northwest New Territories and Tai Po District, as well as traversing the entire length of Lam Kam Road. Some media outlets have branded it the "New Territories East-West Route" (新界東西橫斷線).[41] Although the faster PLB Yuen Long - Tai Po Route operate along the route, passenger numbers remain unaffected and is now one of the few New Territories rural franchised bus routes with relatively frequent services, running as often as every six minutes.

According to Bus Route Planning Programmes and other documents, the ridership of this route is as follows:

  • 2014: The average occupancy rate during the peakiest hour for Sheung Tsuen Po special trips was 18%, i.e. an average of about 15 passengers per trip.
  • 2015: The occupancy rate for the inbound last bus was 20%.[42]
  • 2016: The occupancy rate during the peakiest hour was 71%.
  • 2017: The highest occupancy rate for inbound services was 80%.[43]
  • 2023: During the morning peak period towards Yuen Long, the average occupancy rate during the busiest half-hour at San Ma Lo Pat Heung was approximately 75%. During the afternoon peak period towards Tai Po, the average occupancy rate during the busiest half-hour at Kam Sheung Road Station was approximately 60%.
  • 2024: The occupancy rate during the peakiest half hour was 75%.[44]
  • 2025: The occupancy rate during the peakiest hour was 65%.

Remarks[]

  1. At that time, there was a distinction between Winter Time and Summer Time. When Winter Time was implemented, the Summer Time timetable would be advanced by half an hour across the board, or the first bus if compared with the timetable at the time of commencement.
  2. Road A was a temporary one-way eastbound road, which extends from the present-day intersection between Kai Wo Road and Fuk Wo Road to the intersection between Tai Po Tai Wo Road and Ting Kok Road. Among which one small part in the east is now merged into Tai Po Tai Wo Road and the western part is now rebuilt as Heng Wo House.
  3. Other 11-metre buses in the KMB fleet were actually over 11 metres long and are not allowed to enter Lam Kam Road without a Prohibited Zone Permit.
