The New Territories Bus Route 61X is operated by Kowloon Motor Bus (KMB). It runs between Tuen Mun Central and Kowloon City Ferry, which passes through Tuen Mun Road, Cheung Tsing Tunnel and Ching Cheung Road after On Yau to and from Tai Wo Ping, Wong Tai Sin, Diamond Hill and San Po Kong, which is the sole franchised bus route running between Northwest New Territories and Kowloon City, To Kwa Wan.

History[]

In 1984, KMB proposed to launch a new route between Tuen Mun Central and Kowloon City Ferry to provide suburban connection services for areas in Kowloon that are far away from the MTR network and also facilitating passengers in Tuen Mun District to travel between Wong Tai Sin and San Po Kong. This route was initially named "61A"[1] and "60A" during planning and was scheduled to be put into service in July 1985.[2] However, as the Tuen Mun Central terminus and the Tsuen Wan slip road (section from Texaco Road to Tuen Mun Road) were still under construction, the official launching was delayed until 1986.

  • 7 April 1986: Route 61X entered service, passing through Yau Oi Estate, Tuen Mun Road, Tsuen Wan Road, Lung Cheung Road, San Po Kong and Kowloon City.[3]
  • 1 May 1986: Rerouted in and out of Wong Chu Road via unnamed road, road 16A (present-day Fung On Street) and road 16F for both directions to accommodate the Wong Chu Road reconstruction project.
  • 25 September 1988: With the implementation of Transit Service Area, all bus stops in Tuen Mun District were changed to alighting only for Tuen Mun Central direction, and to boarding only for Kowloon City Ferry direction.
  • 23 January 1990: Rerouted via Road D11, Road 16C, Road 16E[Remark 1] and unnamed road to access Wong Chu Road and Tuen Mun Heung Sze Wui Road for both directions.
  • 21 November 1990: Rerouted via Hammer Hill Road (northbound), roundabout, Hammer Hill Road (southbound) to return to Choi Hung Road for Kowloon City Ferry direction.[4]
  • 11 December 1990: No longer passed through Road 16E and the unnamed road for both directions following the completion of the road project in the Castle Peak Bay Reclamation Area.
  • 31 March 1991: A half-price concession for children was added, and a new section fare from Beacon Heights to Kowloon City Ferry was added.
  • 7 May 1991: Rerouted via Po Kong Village Road instead of Hammer Hill Road for Kowloon City Ferry direction.[5]
  • 1 June 1993: All bus stops in Tuen Mun District were changed to allow boarding and alighting following the changes to the Transit Service Area legislation, with a new section fare from Goodview Garden to Tuen Mun Central added.
  • 25 April 1995: Air-conditioned bus service was added.
  • 1 July 1996: Changed to return to Po Kong Village Road via Lung Poon Street and Fung Tak Road after reaching Lung Cheung Road for Kowloon City Ferry direction, with new stops added at "Lung Poon Street" and "Lung Poon Court".[6]
  • 18 August 1998: Rerouted via Ting Kau Bridge, Cheung Tsing Tunnel and Tsing Kwai Highway for both directions.[7]
  • 19 October 2002: Upgraded to full air-conditioned service.
  • 8 February 2004: Tuen Mun terminus was moved to Tuen Mun WR Station to alleviate the congestion at Tuen Mun Central Bus Terminus and expand the service scope to the San Hui area. [8][9]
    • A new stop was added at "Tuen Mun Park" on Tuen Mun Heung Sze Wui Road for Tuen Mun direction, and no longer called at "Tuen Mun Town Hall" and Tuen Mun Central Bus Terminus; the "Tak Ching Circuit" stop was also added for Kowloon City Ferry direction, and continued to serve Tuen Mun Central Bus Terminus.
  • 14 March 2010: Tuen Mun terminus was relocated to the new indoor Tuen Mun Station Public Transport Interchange following its opening, and the "Tak Ching Circuit" stop on Tuen Mun Heung Sze Wui Road "Tak Ching Wai" for Kowloon City Ferry direction was cancelled.[10]
  • 7 May 2010: An additional stop at "Ming Lun Street" on To Kwa Wan Road was added for Kowloon City Ferry direction.[11]
  • 26 December 2012: To tie in with the commissioning of Tuen Mun Road Bus-Bus Interchange (Kowloon bound), a new intermediate stop at "Tuen Mun Road Interchange" was added for Kowloon City Ferry direction, and Octopus interchange concessions with Routes 59M, 61M, 67M and 68A were introduced.[12]
  • 26 January 2013: Octopus interchange concessions with Routes 58M, 60M, 66M and 66P were added at Tuen Mun Road Interchange (Kowloon-bound).[13]
  • 18 June 2013: A new stop at "Shatin Pass Road" on Lung Cheung Road was added for Kowloon City Ferry direction.
  • 27 July 2013: In conjunction with the opening of Tuen Mun Road Bus Interchange (Tuen Mun bound), a new intermediate stop was set up there for Tuen Mun Railway Station direction and Octopus interchange concessions with various Tuen Mun and Yuen Long routes were introduced.[14]
  • 11 October 2014: Tuen Mun terminus was moved back to Tuen Mun Central to accommodate the extension of Route 60M to Tuen Mun Railway Station.[15]
  • 21 March 2015: Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA) Enquiry System was introduced on this route. [16]
  • 15 August 2016: The first bus time from Tuen Mun Central was advanced to 05:15, and the last bus time from Kowloon City Ferry was postponed to 00:15.[17]
  • 1 July 2017: To tie in with the renewal of KMB’s franchise, the section fares from Tuen Mun Road Interchange to Tuen Mun Central was reduced, and a half-fare concession scheme for same-day return journeys on long-distance routes for students were also implemented.
  • 4 April 2021: A new Octopus two-way section fare from Tuen Mun Central to Goodview Garden was added. Passengers were required to tap the card at the Octopus processor at the relevant stops after getting off the bus to enjoy the two-way section fare.[18][19]
  • 19 December 2021: The "Tuen Mun Town Hall" stop on Tuen Wui Street was added for Tuen Mun Central direction.[20]

Bus deployment evolution history[]

Bus deployment evolution history

This route could not be served with buses longer than 11 metres since commencement due to the narrow access beside the lay-by of Route 45 beside Kowloon City Ferryl, and therefore two-axle buses were dispatched to this route for a long time. Tuen Mun Depot (U) deployed Leyland Victory II (G), Leyland Olympian9.6m (BL) and Mercedes-Benz O305 (ME), whereas Kowloon Bay Depot (K) deployed Dennis Jubilant (N) and MCW Metrobus9.7m (M), and even Dennis Dominator (DM) which was a rare sight in Tuen Mun District, for a long time.

KMB also introduced Dennis Dragon 11m (S3N) on this route, however most of them were withdrawn due to the road problems mentioned above, leaving only S3N324/FZ7937 and S3N342/FZ7574.

The improvement works at Kowloon City Ferry Bus Terminus were completed in 1995, with the original lay-by for Route 45 demolished for reconstruction into a dual lay-by; in addition, with the complaints of overly slow speeds of Leyland Victory II by Tuen Mun District Councils affecting the operation of the bus lane at Tuen Mun Road, Leyland Olympians (S3BL), Dennis Dragon (S3N) and Non-air-conditioned Volvo Olympian 11m (S3V) buses with 11 metres of length were deployed to this route, symbolising the withdrawal of two-axle buses on this route.

In the same year, Dennis Dragon 11m (AD) air-conditioned bus were also added to this route, with additions of Volvo Olympian 11m (AV) to this route in 1998. This route was entirely served by those two models after the full air-conditioning of this route.

In June 2004, low-floor buses debuted on this route with Tuen Mun Depot (U) re-allocating MAN 24.310 12m buses (AMN3, 4, 6, 9, 10 and 11) originally from Route 60X on this route and Kowloon Bay Depot (K) re-allocating one Volvo Super Olympian 12m (3ASV192/KE6577) originally from Route 7; in November of the same year, Kowloon Bay Depot (K) reallocated one Dennis Trident 12m (ATR17/HW3472) to this route and subsequently substituted it with a bus of the same model originally from Long Win Bus.

In 2012, Volvo B9TL 12m (AVBW) and Scania K310UD 12m (ASU) joined this route for two times, but all of these deployments were resumed not long afterwards. Meanwhile, due to the ageing of Dennis Dragons, all non-low-floor fleets were unified to be allocated with Volvo Olympians. In July 2013, all Volvo Olympians were replaced, symbolising the low-flooring of this route.

To facilitate the implementation of the Low Emission Zone for Franchised Buses in late 2015, one Enviro500 MMC demonstrator bus (ATENU135/SH2747) originally from Route 259D joined this route to facilitate orders on Route 52X which passes through the LEZ, until 2016 when it was replaced by a Dennis Trident (ATR333/KV7167) with SCR equipment installed. In March 2016, it was replaced by an Enviro500 MMC (ATENU21/SB5197) from Route 968, and subsequently in April 2016, by another Dennis Trident (ATR269/JT647) with SCR equipment installed from Route 269D.

In March 2016, Kowloon Bay Depot (K) re-allocated an Enviro500 MMC (ATENU881/TW8928) originally from Route 15 to replace the Volvo Super Olympian (3ASV); and in May to June of the same year, Tuen Mun Depot (U) re-allocated Dennis Tridents from Route 258D to replace the remaining MAN 24.310s on this route, symbolising the full retreat of MAN 24.310s on Kowloon routes.

From August 2016, the whole route was changed to be dispatched by Tuen Mun Depot (U) instead, and from November of the same year, all scheduled buses were replaced by MAN A95s (AMNE, AMNF, all withdrawn).

In late 2017, with the addition of Enviro500 MMC 12m (ATENU) buses with "Heartbeat of The City" livery to Route 68X, Route 268C had to receive Enviro500 MMC 12m buses with gold livery originally from the route and KMB re-allocated some of its Enviro500 MMCs to this route, which led to the re-allocation of MAN A95s on this route to Route 66X. In May 2019, multiple Volvo B8L 12m (V6B) buses were added to Routes 260X and 265B, which in turn re-allocated some Enviro500 MMCs to this route and leading to the re-allocation of MAN A95s remaining on this route to Route 66M. Less than a week later, Enviro500 MMC 12m (ATENU) buses with "Heartbeat of The City" livery originally on the above two routes were re-allocated to the entire route.

In September 2019, the running order for the split shift of this route was changed to be served by Volvo B8L (V6B, withdrawn in May the following year), with additions of Enviro500 MMC 12.8m (3ATENU) buses originally on Routes 268C and 269C at the same time; in July of the same year, Enviro500 MMC 12.8m with Heartbeat of The City livery joined this route (re-joined in April the following year, withdrawn).

In July 2021, one of the Enviro500 MMC 12m (ATENU598/TM7037) was shifted to be managed by Kowloon Bay Depot, symbolising the resumption of dispatchments from the depot. It was replaced by a Volvo B9TL (AVBWU264/RJ5466) two weeks later.

In July 2022, the model on this route was unified to Enviro500 MMC 12m (ATENU), with the re-joining of Volvo B8L 12m (V6B) in the next month. In May the next year, 12.8m version of the same model (V6X, withdrawn) even joined this route as well.
