The New Territories Bus Route 59X is operated by Kowloon Motor Bus (KMB). It runs between Tuen Mun Pier Head and Mong Kok East Station, via San Shek Wan, Mei Foo, Cheung Sha Wan and Sham Shui Po, and traveling between Tuen Mun and Kowloon via Tuen Mun Road, Tsuen Wan Road and Kwai Chung Road, belonging to an express route.
History[]
In the Bus Route Development Programme of KMB in 1986, it was proposed to extend the Route 59A from Sham Shui Po via Mong Kok to Tai Kok Tsui Ferry Pier. However, at a time when the government was implementing the Public Transport Coordination Policy, the route from Tuen Mun District housing estates to Kowloon West was not allowed to go beyond the south of Sham Shui Po, so the plan was rejected. At that time, a district council member surveyed 1,554 working people at Butterfly Estate Bus Terminus during busy time on a Sunday morning. As a result, 40% of the respondents stated that their destinations were outside the service range of Routes 59A and 59M, and more than 10% of the respondents went to work in Mong Kok; as for the 800 passengers who get off at Tsuen Wan MTR Station, there are less than 250 respondents The remaining interviewees who work in Tsuen Wan District needed to transfer to other public transportation to go to work.
Coinciding with the implementation of Light Rail Transit Service Area, all bus routes in Tuen Mun District were to be replaced by Light Rail and feeder buses. In an attempt to appease residents and the district councilors in the area who felt dissatisfied, the Transport Department (TD) specifically allowed the Kowloon terminus of this route to be located in Mong Kok.

Bus Deployment Evolution History[]
Bus Deployment Evolution History of KMB Route 59X |
---|
In the early days of its establishment, Route 59X was deployed with with Leyland Victory II (G). The following year, Leyland Olympian11m (S3BL) and MCW Metrobus11m (S3M) 11m three-axle buses were added. By the mid-1990s, 非Air-conditioned Volvo Olympian11m (S3V)s and Dennis Dragon11m (S3N)s were reassigned to this route. This route was introduced in 1991 with two Leyland Olympian 11m (AL) buses. Later, the Dennis Dragon 11m (AD) and the Volvo Olympian 11m (AV) with 3+2 seats were introduced to this route. The 2+2 seat version also started to be added to this route in the late 1990s. In 2004, all split duty running orders were redeployed with the remaining 2+2 version of Volvo Olympian after the cancellation of the Route 63M. Entering the 21st century, low-floor buses joined this route for the first time, with the bus concerend being a Dennis Trident 12m (ATR207/JN1566). After Air-conditioning of bus fleets#Air-conditioned routes in 2001, this bus was withdrawn from this route along with all non-air-conditioned buses, and a large number of Volvo Super Olympian12m (3ASV), newly registered at the time, were deployed instead. To improve the service quality of this route, MAN 24.310 12m (AMN) and Volvo B9TL 12m (AVBWU) were added to the split duty spare running orders respectively to replace some of the Volvo Olympians. The Enviro500 MMC 12m (ATENU) has been heavily deployed on the Tuen Mun District routes since 2013 and this route was also assigned this type of bus at the end of that year and was compiled to the split duty running orders. The original Volvo Olympian (AV), MAN 24.310 (AMN) and Volvo B9TL (AVBWU) buses were all withdrawn, and finally in February 2014, all buses were entirely low-floor buses. In order to cooperate with the government's tightening of Low Emission Zone (LEZ) standards, the remaining Volvo Super Olympian (3ASV) along with Enviro500 MMC (ATENU) on this route were withdrawn from November 2015, and all buses dispatched on the route were unified into the high-capacity version of Volvo B9TL (AVBWU, has withdrawn), and at the same time the entire route was also entirely deployed with straight-staircase buses. On 1 October 2016, most of the vehicles used on this route were swapped with Route 961, and Enviro500 MMC (ATENU) was again deployed on this route. However, this change was restored in November 2017, and it was not until October 2018 that the Enviro500 MMC (ATENU, withdrawn) with "Heartbeat of The City" paint joined this route again. Due to fuel consumption requirements, all the Volvo B9TLs (AVBWU) equipped with Voith gearboxes on this route were transferred to Kowloon Bay Depot (K) and Lai Chi Kok Depot (L) respectively in November 2018, and replaced with vehicles equipped with ZF gearboxes. On March 14, 2019, three "Red Bus 2.0" - Volvo B9TL equipped with Malaysian Gemilang bodywork (AVG1/VS9188, AVG2/VT3923, AVG3/VT4112) made their debuts on this route, and become the scheduled buses of this route. A month later, another "Red Bus 2.0", also equipped with a Malaysian Gemilang bodywork, MAN A95 (AMNF21/VT3317) also made its debut on this route. The above-mentioned "Red Bus 2.0" were withdrawn in December of the same year and January 2021 respectively. In August 2021, Volvo B8L 12m (V6B) buses joined this route. In October 2022, a 12.8-meter bus was added to this route for the first time, with the model being the newly launched Volvo B8L 12.8m (V6X). Six months later, the Enviro500 MMC (E6X) bus of the same length was completely deployed instead. In January 2023, the Enviro500 MMC 12m demonstrator bus (E6T) equipped with a Euro VI engine was put into operation and was withdrawn three months later. |
