Bus deployment evolution history[]

Bus deployment evolution history of KMB Route 59M

Route 59M was assigned with Leyland Victory II (G) at the beginning, and changed to Leyland Olympian 11m (S3BL) 11-metre tri-axle buses in 1988. One batch of buses, including S3BL264-272 with Cummins engine and ZF transmission, was called "59M Nine Brothers" by bus fans because of their performance on Tuen Mun Road.

Air-conditioned buses were introduced to this route in 1993, with one Leyland Olympian 11m (AL) and 2 Dennis Dragon 11m (AD), and also Volvo Olympian 11m (AV) buses with 2+2 seating arrangements were also introduced in mid-1990s.

All air-conditioned scheduled buses were replaced by Neoplan Centroliner 12m (AP) in 2001, which was also the time when low-floor buses debuted on this route. After the conversion to full air-conditioned service in 2003, one Volvo Olympian 11m (AV) was also added to this route again. Besides, one whole-new Volvo B9TL 12m (AVBWU252/RJ2681) also operated on this route temporarily in April 2012.

2013 and 2014 saw the joining of Volvo Super Olympian 12m (3ASV, from Routes 52X, 59X and 968), Dennis Dragon 12m (3AD) and Dennis Trident 12m (ATR), all of which were now withdrawn. In 2015, this route received large amounts of Volvo Super Olympians from Route 59X to replace Neoplan Centroliner 12m buses with lower capacity, with additions of Enviro500 MMC 12m (ATENU) and high-capacity version Volvo B9TL 12m (AVBWU, withdrawn), as Route 59X passes through the Low Emission Zone and in addition to the increase in ridership of Route 59M after the opening of Tuen Mun Road Interchange.

On 4 October 2016, KMB arranged 12.8-metre long Enviro500 MMC (3ATENU, withdrawn) to operate on Route 59M[18], which officially became scheduled models on this route 3 days later; buses of the same model with standing bays from Route 67M and Lai Chi Kok Depot (L) were even added to this route to the replace the original ones in 2018, which were again replaced by those without standing bays from 263 in June 2019. As newly-registered "Heartbeat of The City" buses were scheduled to Route 59X and 265B, this route received high-capacity Volvo B9TL 12m (AVBWU) buses from the two routes, which made this route entirely served by straight staircase buses since April 2018. In November 2018, Enviro500 MMC (ATENU) buses with ZF gearbox replaced the 2 Volvo B9TL 12m (AVBWU) buses with Voith gearbox as the latter were re-allocated to Kowloon Bay Depot (K) and Lai Chi Kok Depot (L).

In April 2019, Enviro500 MMC (ATENU) buses from Route 52X joined this route to replace the high-capacity Volvo B9TL 12m buses re-allocated to Route 61M as Route 61M required more higher capacity buses and Volvo B8L 12m buses were allocated to Route 52X.

In May 2022, 12.8-metre buses re-joined this route, with buses being Enviro500 MMCs with Euro VI engines and standing bays (E6X, 3ATENU) originally from Lai Chi Kok Depot (L), with additions of Volvo B8L 12.8m (V6X, withdrawn) the following year.

In February 2023, Volvo B8L 12m (V6B) joined this route, with additions of its 12.8-metre version (V6X, rejoined in August 2024) the following year.
