The New Territories Bus Route 52X is operated by Kowloon Motor Bus (KMB). It runs between Tuen Mun Central and Mong Kok (Park Avenue), observing Chi Lok Fa Yuen, Sam Shing Estate, So Kwun Wat, Siu Lam, Tai Lam, Tsing Lung Tau, Sham Tseng, Mei Foo, Cheung Sha Wan and Sham Shui Po.

Despite being classified as an express route, this route passes through the section of Castle Peak Road between Chi Lok Fa Yuen and Sham Tseng, thus in fact only passengers at Tsing Lung Tau and Sham Tseng have a time advantage.

History[]

  • 4 May 1992: Route 52 was extended from Cheung Sha Wan to Sham Shui Po Ferry, rerouted via Tuen Mun Road between Sham Tseng and Tsuen Wan as well as Tsuen Wan Road in lieu of Castle Peak Road - Ting Kau, Tsuen Wan and Kwai Chung, and renumbered as "52X".
  • 1 June 1993: All bus stops in uen Mun District were changed to allow boarding and alighting following the changes to the Transit Service Area legislation, with new section fares from Tai Lam Chung to Tuen Mun Central and from Sam Shing Estate to Tuen Mun Central being added.
  • 9 April 1995: Sham Shui Po terminus was relocated to Yen Chow Street.
  • 19 March 1997: Air-conditioned bus service was introduced.[1]
  • 7 September 2002: Upgraded to full air-conditioned service together with Route 60X[2], making it the last batch of express routes from Tuen Mun to West Kowloon to be fully air-conditioned.
  • 2006: En-route stops were changed for several times due to the construction works at Castle Peak Road:
    • 3 February: A new stop was added at "Tsing Lung Tau Tsuen" on Castle Peak Road for Sham Shui Po (Yen Chow Street) direction.
    • 13 May: A new stop was added at "Sea Crest Villa Phase 3" on Castle Peak Road for Tuen Mun Central direction.
    • 28 August: Changed to stop at "Tsing Lung Tau Tsuen" stop on Castle Peak Road in place of the "Villa Alfavista Tsing Lung Tau" stop for Tuen Mun Central direction.
  • 24 November 2008: A new stop was added at "Dragon View" on Castle Peak Road for Tuen Mun Central direction.
  • 29 November 2009: Extended from Sham Shui Po (Yen Chow Street) to Mong Kok (Park Avenue):[3]
    • The route towards Park Avenue remained detouring via Yen Chow Street West and U-turning at Nam Cheong Estate Sham Shui Po before observing Lai Chi Kok Road, Shanghai Street, Argyle Street, Cherry Street and Hoi Wang Road;
    • The route towards Tuen Mun Central would observe Hoi Wang Road, Cherry Street, Argyle Street, Reclamation Street, Mong Kok Road and Nathan Road before returning to the original route at Cheung Sha Wan Road;
    • The first bus time from Tuen Mun Central was advanced and the headways were enhanced;
    • The full fare was raised from $10.0 to $11.3, in line with other routes running via Cheung Sha Wan Road to and from Tuen Mun and Yau Tsim Mong District such as 58X, 59X, 60X and 67X;
    • A new $10.0 section fare from Yee Kok Court to Tuen Mun Central was added so that passengers could still pay the original fare from that stop to Mei Foo, making it the only one among the same type of routes towards Tuen Mun to have this section fare provided.
  • 19 December 2010: A new stop was added at "Yee Ching Court" stop on Cheung Sha Wan Road for Tuen Mun Central direction and the $10.0 section fare was also changed to take effective there.[4]
  • 17 June 2012: The route towards Mong Kok (Park Avenue) was changed to turn left directly onto Lai Chi Kok Road from Yen Chow Street and no longer detoured via Yen Chow Street West and Nam Cheong Estate, with stops at "Tung Chau Street Park", "Nam Cheong Estate Sham Shui Po" and "Nam Cheong Estate" being cancelled.[5]
  • 27 July 2013: A new stop was added at Tuen Mun Road Interchange for both directions and Octopus interchange concessions with various Tuen Mun and Yuen Long routes were introduced.[6]
  • 21 March 2015: Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA) Enquiry System was introduced on this route. [7]
  • 2015: A new special service was introduced, departing at 08:15 on Mondays to Fridays from Tuen Mun Road Interchange to Mong Kok (Park Avenue).[8]
  • 1 July 2017: To tie in with the renewal of KMB’s franchise, the section fares from Tuen Mun Road Interchange to Tuen Mun Central was reduced, and a half-fare concession scheme for same-day return journeys on long-distance routes for students were also implemented.

  • 28 August 2017: The starting point of special departures from Tuen Mun Road Interchange was relocated to So Kwun Wat:[10]
    • New stops were added along So Kwun Wat Road at "Avignon", "Kwun Chui Road" and "Aegean Coast", with the same route and stopping arrangements starting from "Kar Wo Lei Tsuen" stop on Castle Peak Road;
    • The departure time was advanced to 08:00.
  • 25 June 2018: A new stop was added at "So Kwun Wat Road" on So Kwun Wat Road for So Kwun Wat special service.[11]
  • 4 April 2021: New Octopus two-way section fares from Tuen Mun Central to Sam Shing Estate and Hong Kong Gold Coast were added. Passengers are required to tap their Octopus cards at the Octopus validators at the relevant stops after alighting to enjoy the discounted fare.[12][13]

Bus deployment evolution history[]

Bus deployment evolution history of KMB Route 52X and its predecessor

Route 52X's predecessor, 52, was mainly operated by Daimler E during its initial introduction. Leyland Olympian9.6m (BL) and MCW Metrobus9.7m (M) were added in 1995, followed by 11-metre tri-axle buses in 1998 which were mainly MCW Metrobus 11m (S3M) and Dennis Dragon 11m (S3N).

Air-conditioned buses were introduced to this route in 1997 with the model being newly-registered Dennis Dragon 11m (AD, nicknamed "Yellow Pole Dragons") and the whole route became entirely operated by that model after the conversion to full air-conditioned service in 2002. 2003 saw the addition of 12-metre buses which were mainly Volvo Olympian 12m (3AV) and Dennis Dragon 12m (3AD).

Low-floor service was introduced in 2004, mainly being Neoplan Centroliner 12m (AP), which was switched to Volvo Super Olympian 12m (3ASV) in 2006, followed by Volvo Olympian 11m (AV) and Dennis Trident 12m (ATR). Between 2011 and 2015, Volvo B9TL 12m (AVBE, AVBW, AVBWU, dispatched by Tuen Mun Depot (U) except for AVBE) were added to this route.

With the implementation of Government's Low Emission Zone policy, Enviro500 MMC 12m (ATENU) were added in late October 2015, followed by the Facelift version in November and the conversion to full straight-staircase bus deployments in December. A MAN A95 demonstrator bus (AMNE1) was added for a period of time in 2016.

In September 2018, Enviro500 MMC 12.8m (3ATENU, re-added in April 2025) with the Heartbeat of the City livery was added, which was later switched to routes in Yuen Long District with a higher demand. This route became entirely dispatched by Tuen Mun Depot (U) since November onwards.

In March 2019, numerous newly-registered Volvo B8L 12m (V6B) buses were added and even became entirely operated by that model in June next year, which was converted back again to Enviro500 MMC 12m (ATENU, E6T, changed to 12.8m version with Euro VI engines (E6X) , re-added in April 2025).

Lai Chi Kok Depot (L) began deploying buses once again since 12 July 2021, with a champagne-coloured Volvo B9TL 12m (AVBWU) re-added a month later and was switched to deploying Enviro500 MMC 12m (ATENU, re-added in April 2025) in June the next year. Volvo B8L 12m (V6B) buses were re-added again two months later.

Volvo B8L 12.8m (V6X) was added to this route in December 2022.
