Hong Kong Buses Wiki

The New Territories Bus Route 49X is operated by Kowloon Motor Bus (KMB). It runs between Kwong Yuen and Tsing Yi Ferry, which passes through Yuen Chau Kok, Sha Tin Central before taking Shing Mun Tunnels and Cheung Pei Shan Road directly to Tsuen Wan Town Centre, then onto Tsing Tsuen Bridge towards Cheung On Estate and Tsing Yi Estate.

History[]

Commencing background[]

In conjunction with the imminent intake of Kwong Yuen Estate, KMB proposed the introduction of Route 48B in the 1987-1988 Bus Route Development Programme, operating between Kwong Yuen and Tsuen Wan via Tai Po Road - Sha Tin Heights and Ching Cheung Road.

In conjunction with the opening of the Shing Mun Tunnels, KMB proposed in the 1989-1990 Bus Route Development Programme to launch Route 49X, connecting Kwong Yuen and Lai King (North); the terminus was later revised to Tsing Yi Ferry and commenced operations after the Kwong Yuen Estate terminus was put into use.

Bus deployment evolution history[]

Bus deployment evolution history of KMB Route 49X

Route 49X is served by Leyland Victory II (G) during its initial launching, and 11- and 12-metre tri-axle buses including Leyland Olympian (S3BL, 3BL), MCW Metrobus (S3M), Dennis Dragon (S3N, 3N) as well as non-air-conditioned Volvo Olympian (S3V) were added in mid-1990s.

After the conversion to full air-conditioned service in 2001, this route is served entirely by Dennis Dragon 11m and 12m (AD, 3AD) as well as Volvo Olympian 11m and 12m (AV, 3AV). Low-floor  service was introduced in 2002 with the addition of Dennis Trident 12m (ATR). The running order for Lai Chi Kok Depot special shift on this route was once converted to a Volvo B9TL 12m (AVBW) (mainly operates on Route 249X as order shift), which was replaced by a Dennis Trident 12m (ATR) in December of the same year.

Enviro500 12m (ATE) was added to this route in January 2015, followed by Enviro500 MMC 12m (ATENU) in August the same year (which eventually converted to the model in 2020) and the route was converted to a full low-floor service in late-August 2015. Volvo Super Olympian 12m (3ASV) was added in October 2015, followed by Enviro500 12m (ATEU, withdrawn) in December. In April 2016, Volvo B9TL 12m (AVBW) was re-added, and the Euro V version of the same model (AVBWU, withdrawn) and Volvo B7RLE 12m (AVC) single-decker bus were added in March 2017, which were now withdrawn.

In 2018, Enviro500 MMC 12.8m (3ATENU/E6X, the latter was re-joined in July 2022 and March 2023 momentarily) buses were approved on this route with its gradual addition replacing some 12-metre buses of the same model, as well as Dennis Trident 12m (ATR) and Enviro500 12m (ATE) scheduled buses from Lai Chi Kok Depot (L).

Volvo B8L 12.8m (V6X) was added to this route momentarily in 2021 and was re-added again momentarily the next year.

In late August 2022, 4 Volvo B9TL 12m (AVBWU) buses formerly belonging to Sha Tin Depot (S) were shifted to Lai Chi Kok Depot (L).

Ridership[]

Route 49X takes a direct route via Cheung Pei Shan Road without passing through places such as Lei Muk Shue, travelling to and from the Shing Mun Tunnels. Passengers are mainly concentrated in the centre of Tsuen Wan, and passenger volume is very high.[14]

According to the Bus Route Planning Programmes and other documents, the ridership of this route is as follows:

  • 1995: The average daily patronage was 15,795, of which 31.1% interchanged at the Shing Mun Tunnels Bus Interchange. 90.7% of the passengers interviewed agreed that the air-conditioned bus fare differential was 24% higher than the original fare, i.e. $6.7.[15]
  • 2012: The average occupancy rate during non-peak hours on weekdays was only 49% (towards Kwong Yuen) and 46% (towards Tsing Yi Ferry).[16]
  • 2015: The occupancy rate during the peakiest hour was about 90%.[17]
  • 2016: During non-peak period, the occupancy rate during the peakiest hour was about 40%.[18]
  • 2020: About 50% passengers boarded and alighted at en-route stops in Tsuen Wan.[19]
  • 2021: The occupancy rate of the special departure from Shatin Central during the peakiest hour was 46%.

Related incidents[]

  • 14 October 1999: At around 7 p.m., the bus captain of a Dennis Dragon (3N118/DJ9553) heading towards Tsing Yi Ferry swerved and braked to avoid a private car ahead while reaching Shing Mun Tunnel Road off Mei Lam Estate. However, the last vehicle in the queue, a medium-sized goods vehicle, collided with a container truck, which then crashed into the bus ahead. A total of 39 people were injured across the three vehicles and were transported to Prince of Wales Hospital, Princess Margaret Hospital, and Yan Chai Hospital for treatment.[20][21]
