The New Territories Bus Route 49 is operated by Kowloon Motor Bus (KMB). It runs between Tsing Yi (Ching Fu Court) and Tseung Kwan O Industrial Estate; after observing Cheung Hong Estate, Tsing Yi Estate, Cheung Wang Estate and Cheung On Estate, it heads to Tsing Tsuen Bridge, Tsuen Wan Road, West Kowloon Highway, and making stops along Jordan Road, taking East Kowloon Corridor and Kai Tak Tunnel to Kowloon Bay Business Area, Kwun Tong Business Area, then taking Tseung Kwan O Tunnel to and from Hang Hau and Tseung Kwan O South. It is an express route which only provides AM outbound and PM inbound service respectively during Mondays to Fridays.

History

Commencing Background

To cope with the housing developments in Tsing Yi South and the changes in passenger demand in Tsing Yi, the Transport Department (TD) proposes in the 2021-2022 Bus Route Planning Programme to introduce a new bus route between Tsing Yi Road and Tseung Kwan O Industrial Estate via the Tseung Kwan O Tunnel BBI, with four trips going to Tseung Kwan O in the morning from Mondays to Fridays and four trips going to Tsing Yi in the afternoon from Mondays to Fridays, and to decide on the bus operator by way of an open tender exercise. The Department expects that the new route will facilitate Tsing Yi residents to commute to and from Tseung Kwan O Industrial Estate during peak hours and enhance the bus network in Tsing Yi, thus responding to the aspirations of the local community. However, as the route passes through Jordan Road and Wai Yip Street in Kowloon, Kwai Tsing District Council members were concerned about the delay in journey due to heavy traffic and whether there would be any stops along the route, while Sai Kung District Council (SKDC) members demanded that the route be provided with an opposite service. However, the Transport Department (TD) responded that the design of the routes was considered in the context of the overall transport network, e.g. the Tseung Kwan O - Tsuen Wan Bus Routes were already routed via Lung Cheung Road to and from Tseung Kwan O and Kwai Tsing districts on a whole-day basis.

After an open tender process, the Transport Department announced on 16 December 2022 that the new route was awarded to KMB. The route numbering was set at 49 at the time of operation, and was changed to two departures for each direction.

Fare Remarks

Half-fare for children aged below 12 and senior citizens aged 65 or above; the remainder of the fare after half-fare will be counted as 10 cents. Elderly persons aged 65 or above using Senior Octopus Cards or Personalised Octopus cards, Hong Kong residents aged 60 to 64 using JoyYou Card, and eligible persons with disabilities using Personalised Octopus cards with "Persons with Disabilities Status" can enjoy a flat fare of $2.0 per journey under the $2 Concessionary Fare. If the concessionary fare for eligible persons with disabilities aged below 12 and senior citizens aged 65 or above is less than $2.0 after a 50% discount from the regular fare, the beneficiary is only required to pay the original concessionary fare; if the original full fare for Hong Kong residents aged 60 to 64 or eligible persons with disabilities is already less than $2.0, the beneficiary is also only required to pay the original full fare. Passengers are required to tender exact fare by cash or by Octopus card when boarding. No exact change will be given. Passengers can also pay their fares through a variety of electronic payment tools (e-payment system), including using contactless VISA, JCB Card, MasterCard, UnionPay, American Express, Discover Card, Diners Club International Credit Card, UnionPay Credit Card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay, AlipayHK "EasyGo" and UnionPay "QuickPass", BoC Pay "Ride Code" and WeChat Pay HK or WeChat "Ride Code". Passengers using this payment method are not eligible for the interchange concessions with non-KMB/LWB routes, nor are they eligible for the "Public Transport Fare Subsidy Scheme" and "Public Transport Fare Concession Scheme for the Elderly and Eligible Persons with Disabilities". Passengers can purchase 10 single journey tickets for this route at Tsing Yi Station Bus Terminus at a 10% discount and the tickets are valid for 3 months. The following offers are available on the first day of each month: Every two passengers paying adult fare can bring along one child aged below 12 or senior citizen aged 65 or above to travel free of charge; Every passenger who brings along an eligible person with disabilities and pays the fare in cash can enjoy half-fare concession.
