The New Territories Bus Route 48X is operated by Kowloon Motor Bus (KMB). It runs between Wo Che and Tsuen Wan (Bayview Garden), via New Town Plaza, Shing Mun Tunnels, Lei Muk Shue, Tai Wo Hau, Tsuen Wan Town Centre and Chai Wan Kok.

History[]

Commencing background[]

To tie in with the opening of the Shing Mun Tunnels, KMB proposed in the 1989-1990 Bus Route Development Programme that Route 48 be renumbered as Route 48X and run between Wo Che and Tsuen Wan Ferry Pier, serving Shatin Central, Sha Kok Street and Mei Lam Estate in both directions, and that the original service between Kwai Chung and Sha Tin be replaced by a new Route 47X.

Route change history[]

  • 20 April 1990: Route 48X entered service.
  • 1 June 1990: No longer detoured via Mei Lam Estate.[1]
  • 31 March 1991: Half-fare concession for children was introduced with the addition of numerous section fares.

    • No longer passed through Sand Martin Bridge, Sha Kok Street, Tai Chung Kiu Road and Lion Rock Tunnel Road.
  • 5 October 1992: Tsuen Wan terminus was relocated to Bayview Garden.
  • 16 January 1999: Rerouted via Hoi Hing Road, Hoi On Road and Lai Chi Road for Tsuen Wan direction with the conversion of Castle Peak Road - Tsuen Wan outside Belvedere Garden Phase 1 to a one-way eastbound road.
  • 29 October 2000: Enhanced to full air-conditioned service.[2]
  • 27 January 2002: Interchange concessions with several M routes serving Tuen Mun District were introduced.[3]

Bus deployment evolution history[]

Bus deployment evolution history

Route 48X is mainly served by Leyland Victory II (G) during its initial days of launching, and was shifted to Leyland Olympian (S3BL, 3BL) and Dennis Dragon 11m (S3N) tri-axle buses with 11 or 12 metres in length. Since the conversion to ful air-conditioned service in 2000, this route was served entirely by Dennis Dragon 11m (AD).

Into the 21st century, low-floor services were introduced with the addition of Dennis Trident 12m (ATR) and Volvo Super Olympian 12m (AVW) with Wright Explorer bodywork was added in 2010. Volvo Olympian 11m (AV) and Enviro500 12m (ATE) buses were added in 2012 to replace some Dennis Tridents and Dragons.

This route was converted to full low-floor service in 2016 with the addition of Enviro500 MMC 12m (ATENU).

In May 2017, Lai Chi Kok Depot (Tsing Yi Sub-depot) (L) changed to deploy Enviro500 12m (ATE) to replace the Dennis Trident 12m (ATR) buses from the depot; meanwhile, Sha Tin Depot (S) also replaced 4 Enviro500 12m buses (ATE) with high-capacity version Volvo B9TL 12m (AVBWU), and a month later Sha Tin Depot (S) changed to deploy high-capacity version Volvo B9TL 12m (AVBWU) and Enviro500 MMC 12m (ATENU) entirely on this route.

In July 2017, most high-capacity version Volvo B9TL 12m (AVBWU) buses were withdrawn with the introduction of Route 88 and were replaced by Enviro500 12m (ATE) and low-capacity version Volvo B9TL originally from Lai Chi Kok Depot (L), which was reverted two weeks later and was re-added in February 2021 in conjunction with the introduction of e-payment system together with AVBE of the same model (withdrawn). As these models were retired due to high age, the original scheduled buses were replaced by Enviro500 MMC 12m (ATENU) from Route 270A.

Subsequently in September and October, the only 3 Enviro500 MMC (ATENU) buses belonging to Sha Tin Depot (S) were withdrawn to Route 47X, making all Sha Tin Depot (S) bus deployments on this route entirely being Volvo B9TL (AVBWU); however, most of them were replaced by Enviro500 MMC 12m (ATENU) from routes 89D and 286X in July next year (there were also 2 Volvo B9TLs replaced by Enviro500 MMCs with Heartbeat of The City livery, now reverted).

Related incidents[]

Fire accidents[]

  • 15 June 1998: At around 8 a.m., a Leyland Olympian (S3BL15/DK8765) heading towards Bayview Garden departed from Shing Mun Tunnels. Upon reaching the bus interchange near the toll booth heading towards Tsuen Wan, the driver noticed thick smoke emanating from the rear of the bus via the rear-view mirror. He immediately stopped the bus, opened the doors, and evacuated the passengers. A male passenger, apparently in a hurry to escape, suddenly climbed out of the window and jumped off the bus. Upon landing, he accidentally twisted his left foot and fell to the ground. He was taken to the hospital for treatment.[15]
  • 7 August 2012: At around 9 a.m., an Enviro500 (ATE75/LD9861) heading towards Wo Che suddenly emitted smoke from its rear end as it approached Tai Chung Road; however, no one was injured.[16]

Traffic accidents[]

  • 11 October 2002: A Volvo Olympian bus heading towards Wo Che was travelling through the Shing Mun Tunnels when a truck in front suddenly slowed down. The bus was unable to brake in time and collided with the rear of the truck, injuring four passengers.[17]
  • 24 October 2003: At around midnight, a Dennis Dragon bus heading towards Bayview Garden collided with a taxi travelling in the opposite direction on Fung Shun Street, and the taxi driver sustained minor injuries.[18]
  • 15 September 2016: At around 6 a.m., a Dennis Dragon (ADS199/JC1464) heading towards Wo Che was travelling along the Tsuen Wan Road – Kwai Chung section when it was rear-ended by a private car near the Kwok Shui Road Park. The bus captain and the private car driver were taken to the hospital for treatment. The private car driver failed the breathalyzer test and was arrested by the police on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.[19]
  • 2 January 2017: At around 6 a.m., an Enviro500 (ATE172/LM9695) was parked at the intersection of Fung Shun Street and Tak Hau Street when it was hit from behind by a truck, but no one was injured.[20]
