History[]
Commencing background[]
To tie in with the opening of the Shing Mun Tunnel, KMB debundled Route 48 in the 1989-1990 Bus Route Development Programme, including a new route 47X between Wo Che and Lai King (North) via Sha Tin Central, Sha Kok Street and Mei Lam Estate for both directions; the terminus at Kwai Chung was subsequently revised to Kwai Shing (East).

- 31 March 1991: Half-fare concession for children was introduced with the addition of numerous section fares.
- 26 May 1991: Multiple changes were implemented with the opening of Shing Mun Tunnels Bus Interchange:
- Additionally called at Shing Mun Tunnels Bus Interchange for both directions and interchange concessions with other routes stopping there provided;
- Sha Tin terminus was relocated to Chun Shek and no longer served Shatin Central Bus Terminus, Lek Yuen Estate and Wo Che Estate;
- Detoured via Kwai Fong MTR Station for Chun Shek direction.
- 5 June 1991: Resumed detouring via Shatin Central Bus Terminus for both directions.
- 21 October 1991: Departures towards Kwai Shing (East) between 06:56 and 08:44 on Mondays to Fridays were made to omit Shatin Central Bus Terminus.
- 16 September 1994: A new section fare from Che Fong Street to Kwai Shing was introduced.
- 20 April 1995: The route towards Kwai Shing was extended by additionally passing through Kwai Shing West Estate, High Prosperity Terrace, and Shing On House Kwai Shing Estate after Kwai Shing (East) before returning there to end the journey, in conjunction with the commencement of intake at the redeveloped Kwai Shing East Estate.[2]
- 1 November 1996: Detoured via Jat Min Chuen Street for Kwai Shing direction.

Bus deployment evolution history[]
| Bus deployment evolution history of KMB Route 47X |
|---|
|
Route 47X is mainly served by Leyland Victory II (G) during its initial days of launching, and was shifted to tri-axle buses in 1991, mainly being Leyland Olympian 11m (S3BL) and Dennis Dragon 11m (S3N). Since the conversion to ful air-conditioned service in 2001, this route was mainly served by Leyland Olympian 11m (AL) and Dennis Dragon 11m (AD). Low-floor service was introduced in 2006, mainly served by Dennis Trident 12m (ATR). To improve service quality, Volvo Olympian 11m (AV) and Enviro500 12m (ATE, ATEU, ATEE, withdrawn except for the first two ones that were re-added in January and February 2021) buses were added to this route between 2011 and 2014. Later, Dennis Tridents and Dennis Dragon (AD, entirely withdrawn in 2015) were re-added to alleviate the large passenger demand, with Volvo Olympian 12m (3AV, withdrawn) added at the same time. An Enviro500 MMC 12m (ATENU) was added to this route in late August 2015. This route was converted to a full low-floor service in 2016 and was later served entirely by straight-staircase buses in November. In July the next year, Enviro500 MMC 12m (ATENU) from Sha Tin Depot (S) were re-added and newly-registered Volvo B9TL 12m (AVBWU, re-added in February 2021 to facilitate the implementation of e-payment system) buses were even added to this route several times, however they were withdrawn after less than a month of service on this route. In February 2020, Tuen Mun Depot (Yuen Long Sub-depot) (U) joined the bus deployments of this route, with the model being a low-capacity version Volvo B9TL 12m (AVBWU); it was replaced by high-capacity version 3 months later and was eventually replaced by Enviro500 MMC 12m (ATENU). In September 2020, a Volvo Super Olympian (AVW, withdrawn) was added. In February 2021, KMB arranged for designated routes to be served by buses installed with the e-payment system, and the Enviro500 MMC 12m (ATENU) with Facelift bodywork was redeployed to the relevant routes. Volvo B9TL 12m (AVBE, AVBWU, all withdrawn) buses and Enviro500 12m (ATE, ATEU, all withdrawn) were immediately added to this route. From November 2022 onwards, Tuen Mun Depot (Yuen Long Sub-depot) (U) no longer dispatched buses on this route. |

- 2014: The average occupancy rate for this route, as well as routes 34, 37, 37M and 38 during the peakiest half hour was 55-87%.[12]
- 2016: The occupancy rate during the peakiest hour was 81%.[13]
Related incidents[]
Bus theft[]
- 9 October 2006: In the morning, a bus on this route was stolen while parked at Kwai Hing Railway Station and driven to Kwai Fong Railway Station.
Traffic accidents[]
- 30 December 2006: At around 6 p.m., a Dennis Dragon (AD7/EU7919) heading towards Chun Shek stopped near the Hong Kong Heritage Museum on Shing Mun Tunnel Road, Sha Tin, to avoid a broken-down truck in front of it. However, it was rear-ended by a container truck that was suspected of not braking in time, resulting in six people being injured.[14] The bus was deemed irreparable due to severe damage and its advanced age, and was retired early in February 2007.
- 5 September 2007: At around 8 a.m., a bus captain with 18 months of experience was driving a Leyland Olympian (AL108/FE7245) from Fung Shek Street into Chun Shek Bus Terminus when he struck an elderly woman, who was then dragged under the vehicle and was later pronounced dead at the scene.[15][16] Following the incident, the Highways Department constructed an entrance ramp near the semi-circular bend on Shing Tin Street, allowing buses to directly enter the terminal from that road without having to pass through Fung Shek Street.
- 21 May 2013: At around noon, a Volvo Olympian (AV145/GY2583) travelling towards Chun Shek was rear-ended by a Dennis Trident (ATR398/HS7215) travelling on route 269D towards Lek Yuen in Shing Mun Tunnels, leaving 13 people injured.[17]
- 17 March 2014: At around 5 p.m., an Enviro500 (ATEU24/PK662) heading towards Chun Shek collided with a Toyota Coaster (LY9044) minibus travelling on New Territories GMB Route 28K towards Tai Po Market Station as it departed from the Shatin Central Bus Terminus, leaving 8 passengers injured.[18][19]
- 19 January 2015: At around 6 p.m., a Volvo Olympian (AV277/HL659) heading towards Kwai Shing (East) ran a red light while turning right from Tai Chung Kiu Road onto Sha Kok Street in Sha Tin, colliding with a taxi and a private car. The taxi then collided with the rear of a Toyota Coaster (EM2416) operating on New Territories GMB Route 803 heading towards Hin Keng. The minibus lost control, mounted the central reservation, and collided with the guardrail, which then struck a Dennis Trident (ATR241/JR8532) on Route 85A heading towards Kwong Yuen. The taxi driver was pronounced dead after being taken to the hospital, and 19 others were injured, while the bus captain on this route was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving causing death.[20][21]
- 21 January 2015: At around 10 a.m., a Volvo Olympian (AV307/HL7491) travelling towards Kwai Shing (East) was hit from behind by a seven-seater vehicle outside Ho Fung College on Wo Yi Hop Road. The driver of the seven-seater vehicle was taken to hospital due to feeling unwell.[22] This was the second accident on this route within three days.
- 21 September 2015: At around 11 p.m., an Enviro500 (ATE88/LE3924) heading towards Kwai Shing (East) reached the Wo Yi Hop Interchange when a crane truck was conducting tree-cutting work on the slow lane. It was suspected that due to the branches being too long, when the crane arm lifted the branches onto the truck bed, the bus window was struck by the branches, causing the left-side glass on the upper deck to shatter, leaving two male passengers on the bus injured by flying debris.[23]
