At present, a total of six Enviro500 MMC 11.3m (E6M) double-decker buses are scheduled buses for this route.

Bus deployment evolution history[]

Bus deployment evolution history of KMB Route 45

Double-decked buses were introduced in August 1977 and the route was mainly served by Leyland Victory II (G) and Dennis Jubilant (N) front-engined buses in the 1980's and 1990's. Due to the retirement of these buses in the late 1990's, Leyland Olympian9.6m (BL), MCW Metrobus9.7m (M) and Dennis Dominator (DM) 2-axle rear-engined non-air-conditioned buses produced in the 1980's were deployed instead..

In 2000, Dennis Dragon9.9m (ADS) air-conditioned buses were added to this route and in 2002, after conversion to a full air-conditioned service, Dennis Trident 10.6m (ATS) was added to provide low-floor service.

In line with the Government's tightening of the Low Emission Zone (LEZ) standards for franchised buses, this route was fully reassigned to be served by Enviro400 10.5m (ATSE, with successive re-designations from August 2022 until it was withdrawn again in May of the following year) service in September 2015, and all routes were straight-laddered. Since November 2017, the road restrictions on King Cho Road were relaxed and 12-metre medium-axle drive buses have been allowed to operate on this route, and since then there have been occasional sightings of these bus models; however, in February 2018, the Transport Department once again prohibited 12-metre buses from operating on King Cho Road, and once again only short-bodied buses can be used.

On 26 June, Enviro500 MMC 11.3m (E6M9/WU3140) was deployed for the first time on this route, and the entire route was switched to this model from July of the same year.

Ridership[]

Routes 45 and 46 also connect Lai King Hill to Mong Kok, and used to overlap with Route 41 in the section between Mei Foo and To Kwa Wan, resulting in a dilution of patronage. after the cancellation of Route 41, the frequency of this route was also reduced, with the buses towards Kowloon City Ferry Pier during peak hours being full, which was criticised by the public. [15]

According to the Bus Route Planning Programmes and other documents, the ridership of this route is as follows:

  • 2014: The occupancy rate during the busiest hour was 61% and the maximum occupancy rate during the off-peak hour was 38%.
  • 2016: The average occupancy rate during the busiest half-hour decreased from 100% in January to March 2016 to 68.9% in November 2016 after the opening of the Kwun Tong Line Extension.[16]
  • 2022: A field survey at Lai King Station during the morning peak hour showed that the average occupancy rate for the Kowloon-bound direction was less than 15%. [17]
  • 2023:
    • April: After the cancellation of Route 41, a field survey was conducted at Peace Avenue during the morning peak period and at Pui Ching Middle School during the afternoon peak period. The occupancy rate of all trips during the relevant periods was 40-80%, while the average occupancy rate was about 50%. [18]
    • May: A site survey was conducted at CLP during the morning peak period and Pui Ching Middle School during the afternoon peak period. The occupancy rates were 60-80% during the morning peak period and 50-70% during the afternoon peak period. [19]
    • June: A field survey was conducted at Cho Yiu Chuen Commercial Complex during the morning peak period, and the average occupancy rate was about 40% for Kowloon direction. [20]

Related incidents[]

Traffic accidents[]

  • 24 November 1981: In the evening, a Leyland Victory II (G58/CB5135) heading for Kowloon City Ferry suddenly lost control of the bus when it turned right into Chung Hau Street at Fat Kwong Street, Ho Man Tin, and ran into the construction site of the Housing Authority Headquarters building, hitting a retaining wall and overturning the whole bus, injuring 66 people[21][22][23]. Due to the serious damage to the bus, KMB rebuilt the bus body afterwards.
  • 30 April 2008: At around 12:00pm, a Dennis Trident (ATS139/KS1014) heading towards Kowloon City Ferry rushed the red light at Cheung Sha Wan Road, hit and killed a taxi driver who was assisting a passenger to carry goods.[24][25]
    • On 3 February 2009, the bus captain was convicted by the District Court of causing death by dangerous driving and was sentenced to 20 months' imprisonment and 30 months' driving licence suspension.[26]The Department of Justice considered the sentence too lenient, which was accepted by the Court of Appeal, which increased the term of imprisonment to 32 months on 21 September 2009[27]. The surviving family members of the deceased also filed a civil claim against the bus driver and KMB in 2010. [28]

Fire accidents[]

  • 8 February 2003: At about 4:00 p.m., a Lai Yiu-bound Dennis Dragon (ADS30/FV7835) was travelling on Waterloo Road when smoke suddenly came out from the rear of the vehicle and caught fire. No one was injured in the incident. [29]
