Hong Kong Buses Wiki

The New Territories Bus Route 41A is operated by Kowloon Motor Bus. It runs between Tsing Yi (Cheung On Estate) and Tsim Sha Tsui East, serving Tsing Yi Estate, Tsing Yi Ferry and taking the Tsing Yi South Bridge, Tsing Kwai Highway and Lin Cheung Road to and from Tai Kok Tsui (←), Mong Kok and Yau Ma Tei.

Route 41A is the only whole-day route between Tsing Yi and Tsim Sha Tsui. For the first 20 more years since its inception, it made stops along Cheung Sha Wan Road and at one time competed with Route 44 and other routes for passengers between Cheung On Estate and Sham Shui Po, which was not until 2014 that it was speeded up.

History[]

Initial introduction[]

  • 1 September 1988: Route 41A entered service with the intake of Cheung On Estate Stage II. It ran between Cheung On and Sham Shui Po Ferry, which accessed Tsing Yi Island directly via Tsing Tsuen Bridge and Tsuen Wan Road.[1]
  • 29 May 1990: Rerouted via Fung Shue Wo Road, Tsing Yi Ferry and Tsing Yi Bridge for both directions, no longer passing through Tsing Tsuen Road and Tsuen Wan Road.[2]
  • 1 August 1990: A special short-working service was introduced, operating one-way from Cheung On to Mei Foo during mornings on Mondays to Saturdays.[3]
  • 2 April 1995: A new section fare from Tsing Yi Industrial Centre to Cheung On was introduced.
  • 5 November 1995: Multiple changes were implemented with the cancellation of Route 244X:
    • Extended from Sham Shui Po Ferry to Tsim Sha Tsui East;
    • Rerouted via Tsing Yip Street, Tsing Luk Street and Tsing King Road in lieu of Fung Shue Wo Road outside Tsing Kin Temporary Housing Area for Tsim Sha Tsui East direction;
    • Air-conditioned bus service was introduced;
    • Numerous section fares were introduced;
    • The special trip from Cheung On to Mei Foo via Tsing Tsuen Bridge was independently numbered as 41S.
  • 1 May 1996: Rerouted via Tsing King Road, Tsing Luk Street and Tsing Yip Street also for Tsing Yi direction.[4]
  • 17 August 1996: The first bus time from Tsim Sha Tsui East was advanced to 07:35.[5]
  • 1 December 1997: A new section fare from Prince Edward MTR Station to Tsim Sha Tsui East was introduced.
  • 11 October 1998: Temporarily diverted via Lai Chi Kok Road and Wong Chuk Street for 19 months for Cheung On bound due to the stormwater drainage replacement works at Nathan Road. [6]
  • 25 March 2011: Enhanced to full air-conditioned service.[7]

Rerouting via Route 3 and upgrading to express route[]

Since its inception, Route 41A has served as Tsing Yi's sole all-day bus service providing direct access to Tsim Sha Tsui. However, its route along Cheung Sha Wan Road overlaps with routes 41 (now discontinued) and Route 44, resulting in a dilution of passenger numbers. This arrangement has also caused significant inconvenience for commuters travelling to and from Tsim Sha Tsui, with instances of service irregularities occurring. In light of this, the Transport Department and Kowloon Motor Bus proposed in the 2013-2014 Bus Route Development Programme to reroute Route 41A via Tsing Kwai Highway, with the journey time between Tsing Yi and Mong Kok expected to be reduced to 17 minutes, with the original service of Route 41A in Sham Shui Po District would be replaced by Route 44, which would detour via Tsing Yi Ferry and Tsing Luk Street outside the operating hours of Route 44P. District councillors expressed dissatisfaction that the changes to Route 41A would reduce one vehicle while increasing fares. Route 44 already frequently experiences service disruptions; extending the journey time by over ten minutes without increasing frequency would exacerbate the burden and adversely affect residents. Eventually, the proposed reorganisation of routes 44 and 44P was not approved.[8][9]

The following year's Bus Route Development Programme proposed that Route 44 would operate via Tsing Yi Ferry throughout the day, completely replacing the services of Route 44P. District councillors expressed hopes for Route 41A to be speeded up, but raised concerns regarding the frequency of Route 44 services.[10] The Transport Department stated that the changes to Route 44 were intended to complement the plan of conversion of Route 41A into an express route and that once the Transport Department reached consensus on the proposed alterations to Route 44, these would be implemented alongside the plan for Route 41A.[11] The reorganisation plan for routes 44 and 44P was approved in June 2014[12], which was implemented alongside the speeding up of Route 41A, transforming the route into an express service connecting Tsing Yi to Tsim Sha Tsui and gradually increasing its ridership.

  • 25 August 2014: Rerouted via Tsing Kwai Highway and Lin Cheung Road for both directions to provide an express service between Tsing Yi and Mong Kok, no longer passing through Tsuen Wan Road, Kwai Chung Road and Cheung Sha Wan Road:[13][14]
    • The route towards Tsim Sha Tsui East was rerouted via Tsing Kwai Highway, Lin Cheung Road, Tonkin Street West, Tung Chau Street, West Kowloon Corridor, Prince Edward Road West and Lai Chi Kok Road after Kwai Tsing Road before resuming the original routing at Nathan Road;
      • The original stops at "Kwai Tai Road Kwai Chung" and "Kwai Tsing Interchange" on Kwai Tsing Road, "Kwai Chung Interchange" on Kwai Chung Road, "Prince Edward Station" on Nathan Road as well as all stops along Cheung Sha Wan Road were cancelled, with a new stop at "Arran Street Mong Kok" on Lai Chi Kok Road;
      • The section fare beginning from "Mei Foo Station" stop was cancelled and the section fare beginning from "Prince Edward Station" stop was changed to take effect from Arran Street;
    • The route towards Cheung On was rerouted to turn left onto Argyle Street after Nathan Road and proceed along Cherry Street, Sham Mong Road, Hoi Fai Road, Lin Cheung Road and Tsing Kwai Highway before returning to the original routing at Kwai Tsing Road;
      • The original stops at "Fife Street Mong Kok" and "Prince Edward Station" on Nathan Road, "Mei Foo Station" on Lai Chi Kok Road, "Kwai Chung Interchange" on Kwai Chung Road, "Kwai Tsing Interchange" and "Kwai Tai Road Kwai Chung" on Kwai Tsing Road, as well as all stops along Cheung Sha Wan Road were cancelled, with new stops at "Mongkok Market Complex" on Argyle Street, "Ming Kei College" and "Central Park" on Cherry Street, as well as "Olympic Station" and "Harbour Green" on Sham Mong Road;
      • The section fares beginning from Fife Street and Mei Foo Station were cancelled;
    • The full fare was increased from $7.8 to $8.9.
  • 21 March 2015: Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA) Enquiry System was introduced on this route. [15]
  • 1 February 2020: Octopus interchange concessions with LWB routes E31 and E32 were introduced, originally until 31 January the next year and thereafter permanently.[16]
  • 17 March 2024: Interchange concessions with routes 42M, 243M and 249M were introduced.[17]

Bus deployment evolution history[]

Bus deployment evolution history of KMB Route 41A

Route 41A initially operated primarily with Daimler Fleetline (D) buses. By 1990, following the diversion via Tsing Yi South Bridge, 11-metre three-axle buses were deployed, including Leyland Olympian 11m (S3BL) and MCW Metrobus 11m (S3M) models. When air-conditioned buses were introduced in 1995, the route initially operated primarily with Dennis Dragon 11m (AD) buses, later transitioning to Volvo Olympian 12m (3AV). Low-floor services bus commenced in 2003 with Volvo Super Olympian 12m (3ASV), replaced in 2005 by Dennis Trident 12m (ATR). The following year saw the introduction of Volvo B9TL straight-staircase buses (including AVBE models with Enviro500 bodies and AVBW models with Wright bodies). In 2011, this model was temporarily deployed exclusively across the entire fleet for low-floor services.

As of 2012, this route still operated one non-air-conditioned Volvo Olympian 11m bus (S3V18/GK9323). In February that year, the vehicle was wrapped with JR Team's Farewell Non-air-conditioned Bus advertisement (Victoria Harbour edition), but was withdrawn after just five days of service due to breakdowns. During this period, it was frequently replaced by S3V29 (GK8843), leaving the route number vacant. On 21 February, it was replaced by an identical bus (S3V23/GK9710) bearing the JR Team Farewell Non-air-conditioned Bus advertisement. Following the transition to full air-conditioned service, the sole remaining non-air-conditioned bus was replaced by a 12-metre double-decker Volvo Olympian air-conditioned bus (3AV281/HF3204).

The route underwent full low-floor conversion in 2014, primarily using Volvo Super Olympian 12m (AVW) fitted with Wright bodyworks. A small number of Volvo B9TL 12m (AVBW) buses with Wright bodies also operated until November that year, when the entire fleet was replaced by the same model fitted with Euro V engines (AVBWU). In September 2015, the entire route was converted to Enviro500 MMC 12m (ATENU).

In September 2017, the entire route was reallocated to operate with Volvo B9TL coaches featuring the "Heartbeat of the City" livery, becoming KMB's first route to be fully equipped with the new design. The following year, one Enviro500 MMC (ATENU, since withdrawn) in the "Heartbeat of the City" livery was added to the fleet. Shortly thereafter, it was exchanged with a bus of the same model from Route 961 at U.

From January 2021, Volvo B8L 12m (V6B) buses were progressively introduced to this route, with the entire fleet transitioning to this model by July of the same year.

In August 2022, the entire route was reassigned to high-capacity Volvo B9TL (AVBWU) buses. A week later, Enviro500 MMC 12.8m (3ATENU) buses were introduced. Seven months after that, vehicles of the same model fitted with Euro VI engines (E6X) were temporarily added to the fleet.

On 4 December 2023, the Transport Department granted approval for the route to operate with BYD B12D 12m (BED) double-decker electric buses.

Passenger and bus captain incidents[]

  • 26 July 2008: At approximately 3:00 am, a Volvo B9TL (AVBW64/MP8454) parked at Tsing Yi Railway Station was stolen by an unlicensed rogue bus fan who used his own bus key to start the vehicle. The suspect drove the bus for over seven kilometres while being pursued by a Kowloon Motor Bus outsourced security patrol vehicle. The bus was intercepted by security personnel upon entering Mei Foo Public Transport Interchange, whereupon responding officers promptly arrived to apprehend the suspect.[26][27]
  • 24 March 2012: The final day of non-air-conditioned bus (hot dog bus) services on this route attracted large numbers of bus enthusiasts who drove along the route and took photographs.[Remark 1] The final hot dog bus departing Tsim Sha Tsui at 7:30 pm saw buses being packed fully, with some unable to board even at the terminus. One week after the route's conversion to full air-conditioned service (31 March), Oriental Daily News reported on this development.[28]
  • 28 June 2018: A female passenger travelling on a Route 41A bus towards Cheung On ndiscovered her buttocks had been pricked by what appeared to be a pin inserted into the seat when the bus reached Nathan Road near Wing Sing Lane. She sought treatment at Kwong Wah Hospital's Accident and Emergency Department, while KMB also reported the incident to the police.[29][30]
