Hong Kong Buses Wiki

The New Territories Bus Route 299X is operated by Kowloon Motor Bus (KMB). It runs between Shatin Central and Sai Kung, via Yuen Chau Kok (Tai Chung Kiu Road), Shek Mun, A Kung Kok, Chevalier Garden, Shap Sze Heung (Sai Sha Road) and Tai Mong Tsai.

Route 299X was renumbered from Route 299 and operates via the Ma On Shan Bypass and omits the area around Sha Kok Mei, thus becoming the first express route serving Shap Sze Heung in Sai Kung North, Tai Po District.

History[]

The main article of this section is KMB Route 299.

KMB introduced the air-conditioned Route 299 in June 1990. At that time, the T7 Trunk Road (now Ma On Shan Bypass) had not yet been constructed, necessitating the route to pass through Heng On Estate, Yiu On Estate and Ma On Shan Town Centre with stops along the way. Although a significant number of passengers boarded and alighted at Ma On Shan for journeys along Sai Sha Road and to Sai Kung Town Centre, the detour via Ma On Shan resulted in a considerably longer journey time for passengers travelling to and from Sha Tin Town Centre.

The Ma On Shan Bypass opened on 17 August 2004, yet it was nearly a decade later before KMB commenced studies on how to appropriately restructure routes 299 and 99, enabling each to focus exclusively on serving passengers travelling between Ma On Shan and Sha Tin to Sai Kung.

The Transport Department and KMB finally proposed in the 2013-2014 Bus Route Development Programme that Route 299 should be rerouted via the Ma On Shan Bypass, no longer detouring via Ma On Shan (except for Chevalier Garden), enabling passengers to travel more conveniently between Sha Tin Central and Sai Kung, with the route number also changed to 299X.[1]

The original Route 299 service between Sai Kung and Ma On Shan was replaced by extending Route 99 to Heng On and introducing a two-way section fare system. Concurrently, considering traffic congestion around Fuk Man Road, this route would take Wai Man Road directly to and from Sai Kung Bus Terminus and consequently, the original Route 299 bus stops at "Muk Min Shan" and "Sha Kok Mei" on Tai Mong Tsai Road, and "Sai Kung Police Station" on Fuk Man Road would be discontinued.

Route change history[]

  • 11 January 2014: The original Route 299 was diverted via Ma On Shan Bypass in lieu of serving Hang Hong Street and Ma On Shan Town Centre, and also rerouted via Wai Man Road for direct access to and from Sai Kung in lieu of Fuk Man Road, Po Tung Road and Tai Mong Tsai Road (Sha Kok Mei section), and was renumbered as Route 299X.[2]
    • There were also changes to the section fares. The bus stop at Saddle Ridge Garden on Sai Sha Road has been discontinued for this route, and the corresponding section fare at that location has likewise been abolished and consequently, the fare from Chevalier Garden to Shatin Hospital en route to Shatin Central has increased from $7.1 to $8.2. Two days later (13 January), KMB introduced a new section fare from Chevalier Garden to Shatin Central at the request of District Council members[3], aligning the fare for these passengers with the previous Route 299.
    • Due to the time required for the Octopus system update, the additional sectiol fares could not be implemented in time for the route's commencement, resulting in a gap period between the route's launch on 11 January and 12 January in which passengers travelling towards Shatin Central from stops at Chevalier Garden, A Kung Kok or Sha Tin Hospital on these two days and paying with an Octopus card may have been overcharged. KMB advised affected passengers to contact the company[Remark 2] to arrange a refund of the $1.1 difference.[4]
  • 8 November 2014: Octopus interchange concession with Route 99 was introduced as a compensation to the passengers at Sha Kok Mei and Muk Min Shan after the route's diversion.[5]
  • 10 November 2014: Departures from Sai Kung on Mondays to Fridays before 07:00 resumed observing Fuk Man Road, Po Tung Road and Tai Mong Tsai Road (Sha Kok Mei section) as former Route 299 with stops added at "Sha Kok Mei" and "Muk Min Shan".[5][6]
  • 27 June 2015: Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA) enquiry service was introduced to this route.[7]
  • 6 July 2015: A new stop was added at "Mei Tak Street" on Wai Man Road for both directions except for the 07:00 departure from Sai Kung on Mondays to Fridays.[8]
  • 9 May 2020: The "Nai Chung" bus stop for Sai Kung direction was relocated to the new temporary terminus east of Hong Kong Baptist Theological Seminary with detours via Nin Wah Road and Nin Ming Road to access the new terminus from 10am onwards with the expansion works of Sai Sha Road.[9]
  • 20 June 2020: The "Nai Chung" bus stop for Sai Kung direction was relocated to southbound Sai Sha Road opposite to Sai O Village and no longer detoured via the temporary terminus. The arrangement was originally effective until 6pm on 31 October 2021, which was later extended to 6pm on 13 March 2022[10][11][12] and eventually relocated permanently to southbound Sai Sha Road off Nai Chung Village.[13][14]
  • 1 September 2025: Morning special services via Sha Kok Mei on Mondays to Fridays were enhanced to 4, departing at 05:40, 06:10, 06:30 and 06:45 on a trial basis until 28 November 2025.[15]

Bus deployments[]

8 Enviro500 MMC 12m (ATENU) buses fitted with tree guards are assigned to this route as scheduled buses.

Although rural Sai Kung is under the jurisdiction of Kowloon Bay Depot (K), unlike Route 99 which also runs between rural Sai Kung and Sha Tin District, this route is the only one in Sai Kung District that is under the management of Sha Tin Depot (S) as buses on this route are fully deployed by that depot on a regular basis.

Bus deployment evolution history[]

Bus deployment evolution history of KMB Route 299X and its predecessor

This route's predecessor, Route 299, offered full air-conditioned service from its inception, initially operating with Toyota Coaster 24-seat single-decker buses (AT). In 1994, it transitioned to higher-capacity Mitsubishi MK (AM) and Dennis Dart (AA) models. Additionally, two MCW Metrorider (AMR) 33-seater air-conditioned buses were also deployed on Route 299.

In 1997, Route 299 was re-scheduled to operate with Dennis Dragon9.9m (ADS) buses. Entering the 21st century, Dennis Trident 10.6m (ATS) and Volvo Super Olympian 10.6m (ASV) buses were introduced to provide low-floor services, meeting the demands of increasing passenger numbers.

Initially, all services on Route 299 were dispatched from Sha Tin Depot (S). As ridership continued to grow, Kowloon Bay Depot (K) also began dispatching buses. By late 1999, all Kowloon Bay Depot buses operating on this route were transferred back to Sha Tin Depot, restoring single-depot dispatch.

Following the renaming to Route 299X, all Volvo Super Olympian (ASV) buses were replaced by Dennis Trident (ATS) models. Some of these ATS buses were subsequently redeployed from this route due to the introduction of Route 280X, being replaced by Volvo Olympian 11m (AV) buses; until January 2016, when the entire fleet was converted to low-floor vehicles.

For a considerable period, KMB had been concerned about the narrow and winding nature of the section of Sai Sha Road between Nai Chung and Mak Pin and had consistently prohibited the deployment of buses exceeding 11.3 metres in length on Route 299 (initially set at 10.6 metres, later relaxed to 11.3 metres following trial runs). This remained the case until 1 October 2012, when a Kowloon Bay Depot Inspector completed the entire Route 299 journey using a Enviro500 12m bus (ATEE1/RE508), which sparked considerable discussion among bus enthusiasts. Although KMB maintained the ban afterwards, this incident demonstrated that deploying 12-metre buses on Sai Sha Road was not impracticable. In November 2016, Sha Tin Depot (S) conducted assessments and test runs for deploying 12-metre vehicles. Following successful trials, 12-metre buses commenced service on Route 299X from the afternoon of 27 November. Initially operating only on weekends and public holidays, KMB subsequently phased in straight-staircase buses to free up shorter vehicles for routes subject to other vehicle restrictions. In February 2017, KMB replaced one of the route's scheduled buses with an Enviro500 12m bus (ATE6/KY5280), marking the first time since the route's opening that 12-metre buses were permanently deployed on the Sai Sha Road section between Nai Chung and Mak Pin. Subsequently, between March and April 2017, three ATE buses were introduced in batches. By mid-May, four ATE buses transferred from Route 48X replaced the remaining four ATS buses, achieving full step-less conversion across the entire route. Combined with Route 99, which had already been approved for 12-metre buses, this enhanced capacity to transport holidaymakers travelling to and from Sai Kung for outings.

In February 2021, as the Enviro500 (ATE) fleet began entering its retirement phase and given the narrow carriageway on Sai Sha Road which posed a heightened risk of collisions between buses and tree branches, KMB arranged for the entire route to be operated by Enviro500 MMC 12m (ATENU) buses equipped with tree guards originally from Kowloon Bay Depot (K).
