Hong Kong Buses Wiki

The New Territories Bus Route 290X is operated by Kowloon Motor Bus (KMB). It runs between LOHAS Park Station and Tsuen Wan West Station, via Pak Shing Kok, Tseung Kwan O Town Centre, Tiu Keng Leng, Po Lam (Po Hong Road), Tsui Lam, Ma Yau Tong, On Tat Estate, On Tai Estate, Ngau Chi Wan, Wong Tai Sin, Tai Wo Ping and Kwai Chung.

Route 290X is the third "Tseung Kwan O - Tsuen Wan Bus Routes" which operates on a semi-direct route in the same way as the main route, with limited stops on Lung Cheung Road in both directions.

History[]

"Tseung Kwan O - Tsuen Wan Bus Routes" 290 and 290A have been well received by Tseung Kwan O residents since their commencement of service on 28 March 2015, with increasing patronage. However, they are not able to cover the housing estates along Wan Po Road and the Tseung Kwan O Industrial Estate; and Tseung Kwan O town centre residents using these two routes have to make a roundabout route via Hang Hau area, which is also a circuitous route.

In the 2016-2017 Bus Route Planning Programme, the Transport Department (TD) and KMB have proposed to introduce two special routes, namely, Routes 290B and 290X. Among them, Route 290X departs from LOHAS Park Station to Tsuen Wan West Station during the morning peak hours, and after passing through Oscar By The Sea, it would be routed via Po Yap Road, Po Shun Road, Tong Ming Street and Po Hong Road, and then follow the same routing as Route 290 to go to the town centres of Kwai Chung and Tsuen Wan, without passing through Hang Hau and King Lam Estate, and without stopping at "Po Tat Estate" stop on Po Lam Road, providing express service from Tseung Kwan O South and Town Centre to Tsuen Wan.

Bus deployment evolution history[]

Bus deployment evolution history of KMB Routes 290, 290A and 290X

When the Routes 290 and 290A came into service, the vehicles were mainly the then newly licensed high capacity version of the Enviro500 MMC 12m (with ATENU456/TF7808 displaying a full body advertisement advertising the launch of the "Tseung Kwan O - Tsuen Wan Bus Routes", which has been removed), while the other two Enviro500 The other two Enviro500 12m buses (ATENU71/SE6818 and ATENU453/TF7621, both removed) were equipped with Electronic Route Map and 4G Wi-Fi Service before the commencement of service and in October 2015 respectively. KMB subsequently extended the two new features to the remaining registered buses of this group of routes in January 2016, making them the first two KMB routes with electronic route maps and Wi-Fi service, and subsequently replaced them with newer batches of the same vehicles.

In 2017, the high capacity version of Volvo B9TL 12m (AVBWU) was added twice to the routes, but was mostly withdrawn after less than a month, then rejoined for the third time four years later with a low capacity version, but was removed after less than a week, then rejoined for the fourth time the following year, and was again withdrawn in February 2023.

Since April 2018, Enviro500 MMC 12m buses with "Hearbeat of The City" livery was added to this route, replacing the earlier batches of the same model.

In 2020, Volvo B8L 12m buses (V6B) were deployed by Kowloon Bay Depot (Tseung Kwan O Sub-depot) (K) (joined again in August 2021 and withdrawn later in November).

Since August 2020, all 5 "Tseung Kwan O - Tsuen Wan Bus Routes" were approved by the Transport Department to use 12.8m buses. This set of routes were then deployed with 5 Euro 6 Enviro500 MMC 12.8m buses (E6X) as scheduled buses (rejoined in November 2011); newly-registered Volvo B8L 12.8m buses (V6X) were also added to this route in November (re-joined in September 2021 and withdrawn again in August the next year)

In February 2021, Euro 5 Enviro500 MMC 12.8m buses (3ATENU) originally from Routes 258D, 259D, 268C and 269C joined the routes and swapped with the originally existing 12.8m buses.

In August 2022, a Volvo B8L 12m demonstrator bus joined the routes (AVBML1/WA756, withdrawn)

In October 2022, one Enviro500 MMC 11.3m (E6M, withdrawn) joined the routes to run on Route 91M as an order shift.

Ridership[]

After Route 290X was re-routed via On Tat Estate and On Tai Estate since June 2017, there has been a significant upward trend in patronage. To cope with the future population development in the Anderson Road Development Area and LOHAS Park areas, the Transport Department and the bus company proposed in the 2018-2019 Bus Route Planning Programme that this route be enhanced to a whole-day service to facilitate residents of Tseung Kwan O South and Anderson to commute between Tsuen Wan and Kwai Fong, which was implemented on 22 December 2018 [19], and further proposed in the 2022-2023 Bus Route Planning Programme to service enhancement to replace the catchment area of Route 290 in Tseung Kwan O Town Centre and Tiu Keng Leng, and the arrangement was implemented on 17 June 2024.

According to the Bus Route Planning Programmes and other documents, the ridership of this route is as follows:

  • 2022: 73% average occupancy was recorded during the peak hour.
  • 2023: The peak hour average occupancy rate was 56%. [20]

Related incidents[]

Traffic accidents[]

  • 4 May 2019: At around 9:00am, a concrete mixer truck was suspected to have braked sharply on Kwai Chung Road to avoid a four-wheel drive vehicle which had stopped in front of it due to breaking down, followed by an Enviro500 MMC (ATENU1028/UC5066) heading towards LOHAS Park Station which failed to retract its brakes and crashed into the concrete mixer truck, resulting in injuries to four people.[21]
  • 23 February 2024: At around 8:00 a.m., an Enviro500 MMC (ATENU1028/UC5066) heading for Tsuen Wan West Station collided with a taxi on New Clear Water Bay Road, injuring two people.[22]
  • 11 August 2024: at about 4:00 pm, an Enviro500 MMC (ATENU841/TV7870) heading for Tsuen Wan West Station hit a pedestrian crossing signal at the junction of Tai Ho Road and Tsuen Wan Market Street, causing the traffic signal at the junction to fail for a while.[23]
  • 25 January 2025: At about 2:00 pm, an Enviro500 MMC (ATENU1230/UT6162) heading towards LOHAS Park Station hit the body of a passing lorry as it was cutting right away from the bus stop at Tai Ho Road.[24]

Other incidents[]

  • 2 November 2021: At around 7:00am, an Enviro500 MMC (ATENU978/UB3768) heading towards Tsuen Wan West Station was driving near Po Tat Estate on Po Lam Road when, due to traffic congestion on the road in front of it, the bus captain crossed the double white line for the sake of convenience and travelled against the traffic lane for about 90 metres and then returned to the original traffic lane. The incident was recorded by a nearby vehicle and uploaded to a video-sharing website, which aroused heated debates among netizens.[25] After investigation, the Kowloon East Traffic Department arrested the 60-year-old bus driver on suspicion of dangerous driving on 5 November, and the bus captain was immediately dismissed by KMB. The driver was also dismissed immediately by KMB.[26]
    • The driver pleaded guilty to one count of dangerous driving and was sentenced on 24 February the following year to a fine of $5,000, a six-month suspension of driving licence, and a driving improvement course at his own expense.[27]
  • 20 November 2022: In response to the "2022 Community Chest New Territories Walk for Millions", KMB operated a special departure from Park Central at Po Yap Road on that day to take participants back to Tsuen Wan West Station. [30] However, the station was far away from the Walk for Millions destination, and due to insufficient publicity, the patronage of the special departure was extremely low and eventually, the on-duty staff at the stop arranged for the passengers to take regular departures on this route.[28]
