The New Territories Bus Route 287X is operated by Kowloon Motor Bus (KMB). It runs circular between Shui Chuen O and Jordan, observing Sha Tin Wai, Chun Shek Estate and Tai Wai within Sha Tin District, and observing Jordan Road, Yau Ma Tei, Mong Kok and Tai Kok Tsui in order before returning to Tai Wai. It belongs to an express route between Sha Tin and Kowloon via Tsing Sha Highway.

History[]

Commencing Background[]

The proposal to reorganise KMB Route 87A into this route was already shown in the 2011-2012 Bus Route Development Programme. The proposed routing at that time was more or less the same as the later finalised proposal, except that the return journey would pass through the area around Hoi Fai Road in Tai Kok Tsui instead of entering the terminus in Mong Kok (Park Avenue). When the proposal was scrutinised by the Traffic and Transport Committee of the Sha Tin District Council, it was voted down due to members' dissatisfaction with the reduction of bus services between Sha Tin and the Shek Kip Mei and Sham Shui Po areas.

In the following year, the Administration resubmitted the proposal to operate this route through the 2012-2013 Bus Route Development Programme for consideration by the Council. The details of the proposal were exactly the same as those of the previous year, except that it was also proposed to reconfigure the original Route 86B into Route 286X, and to set up a bus-bus interchange (BBI) at the interchange stop on Tsing Sha Highway. The routing at Tai Kok Tsui for the return journey to Sha Tin was subsequently amended to reroute via Hoi Fai Road instead of Sham Mong Road, calling additionally at two stops "Central Park" and "Harbour Green".

This route was originally planned to be commissioned together with Route 286X in the third quarter of 2012, and the latter was the first to be commissioned on 1 December 2012, while this route has not been commissioned after a long time, which was said to be due to the lack of sufficient quota for this route on Nathan Road northbound. In response to the dissatisfaction of Mong Kok West District Council members who were dissatisfied that Route 87A would no longer pass through the Mong Kok (Park Avenue) Bus Terminus after its reorganisation, the Administration has responded to their request by diverting this route to pass through the terminus, and at the same time fine-tuning the routing of Routes 86A and 87B in order to reduce the impact of the reorganisation of Route 87A to the commuters. The above proposed amendments were endorsed by the Traffic and Transport Committee of the Sha Tin District Council at its meeting on 10 September 2013. Until mid-August 2014, KMB placed promotional leaflets for this route at some bus stops for passengers to pick up, stating that this route would be put into service from 23 August 2014, but the Tsing Sha Highway Interchange interchange discounts were not offered at the moment of commencement.

In addition, as early as May 2014, the relevant parties had already proposed in the Area Approach rationalisation for bus routes in Sha Tin District that this route, which had not yet commenced service at that time, would be extended to Shui Chuen O Estate upon its occupation. Due to the increase in distance, the full fare in the proposal was increased from the original $6.8 to $7.7. In August of the same year, the Transport Department proposed a revised proposal to divert the Jordan-bound route to bypass Pok Hong Bus Terminus. At the same time, it was also proposed that the full fare of the diverted route would be increased to $8.1, while a concessionary fare of $7.1 would be offered on the return trip (from Jordan to Shui Chuen O), so that the passengers could return to Sha Tin at the original fare for one year. However, the fare increase proposal was eventually not implemented with the extension of the route.

Bus Deployment Evolution History[]

Buses on Route 287X were originally from Route 87A, which was the predecessor of this route;[Remark 1] later, Dennis Trident10.6m (ATS), Volvo B9TL (AVBW, AVBWU), Enviro500 12m (ATEU) and Enviro500 MMC 12m (ATENU) once joined this route. Until the second half of April 2015, only Volvo Super Olympians (3ASV) and Volvo B9TLs (AVBWU) were deployed on this route.

Since June 2016, Enviro500 MMCs (ATENU) were entirely used on this route, and were replaced by the Facelift version of the same model in August of the same year. The next year, Enviro500 MMCs (ATENU) and a Volvo B9TL (AVBWU665/VB1425) with the "Heartbeat of The City" livery joined this route; however Enviro500 MMCs with the "Heartbeat of The City" livery replaced the latter in March 2018, symbolising the unification of models used on this route.

In August 2020, Volvo B8Ls (V6B, withdrawn) joined this route.
