The New Territories Bus Route 281A is operated by Kowloon Motor Bus (KMB). It runs between Kwong Yuen and Kowloon Station, via Yuen Chau Kok, Kowloon Tong (Waterloo Road), Mong Kok, Yau Ma Tei (Nathan Road) and Tsim Sha Tsui, taking Sha Tin Road and Lion Rock Tunnel.

History[]

Commencing Background[]

In the 1998-1999 Bus Route Development Programme, it was proposed to introduce this route in June 1998, with the outbound journey following Route 281P to Nathan Road and then turning right to Jordan Road for the Kowloon AR Station, and the return journey via Mong Kok, Hung Mui Kuk Road, Che Kung Miu Road, Tai Chung Kiu Road to Yuen Chau Kok and Kwong Yuen. As a result of these changes, Routes 281P and 287P would be cancelled and Route 81C would be diverted to Sha Tin Road with reduced headways. However, when the scheme is finally implemented, this route travelled directly between Tai Chung Kiu Road and Kowloon via Sha Tin Road, while Route 81C was not diverted.

Route Change History[]

  • 25 September 1999: Route 281A was put into service to replace Routes 281P and 287P.[1]
  • 19 October 2002: Interchange concessions with various Lion Rock Tunnel routes were introduced.[2]
  • 24 February 2008: The route was changed to go directly to Nga Cheung Road southbound for Kowloon Station direction, calling additionally at "Nga Cheung Road" stop then turn around and return to Nga Cheung Road northbound to Jordan Road roundabout, then turn around and return to the original routing at Nga Cheung Road southbound.
  • 18 October 2009: To tie in with the truncation of routing of Route 63X within Yuen Long District and no longer serving Tsim Sha Tsui, Octopus interchange concessions with a number of Yuen Long District bus routes were introduced.
  • 2 January 2011: Routing in the vicinity of the Kowloon Railway Station was modified to tie in with the new traffic arrangements for the construction of the West Kowloon Terminus of the Express Rail Link:[3]
    • For Kowloon Railway Station direction, the route was diverted via Wui Cheung Road, Wui Man Road, Austin Road West, Nga Cheung Road and Kowloon Station access, omitting Jordan Road near Lin Cheung Road, and the stop at Jordan Road and Nga Cheung Road were cancelled;
    • After departing from Kowloon Railway Station, the route was diverted via Kowloon Station access, Nga Cheung Road, Austin Road West, Wui Man Road, Wui Cheung Road, Canton Road and return to the original routing, omitting Lin Cheung Road.
  • 20 January 2011: An additional intermediate stop was added at Austin Road West for Kowloon Railway Station direction.[4]
  • 12 August 2012: An additional intermediate stop was added at "Poplar Street" on Boundary Street for Kwong Yuen direction. [5]
  • 27 June 2015: Estimated Time of Arrival Enquiry System was introduced on this route.[6]
  • 2 February 2016: Due to the closure of Wui Man Road southbound for the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Express Rail Link project, Kowloon-bound buses were changed to turn left at Canton Road northbound to Austin Road west to return to the original routing, no longer observing Wui Cheung Road and Wui Man Road, and the stop at "Austin Railway Station" was cancelled.[7]
  • 17 June 2018: The stop at "Cheong Lok Street Yau Ma Tei" on Nathan Road was cancelled and changed to call at "Saigon Street Yau Ma Tei" stop instead for Kowloon Station direction. [8]
  • 18 October 2021: An additional stop was added at "Nga Cheung Road (International Commerce Centre)" on Nga Cheung Road for Kwong Yuen direction.[9]

Special Departures[]

  • 14 December 2002: Special departures from Kowloon Central Post Office to Kwong Yuen at 17:30, 17:50, 18:10 and 18:30 on weekday afternoons were introduced.[10]
  • 10 May 2004: The special departure from Kowloon Central Post Office to Kwong Yuen at 17:30 on weekdays was cancelled.
  • 4 August 2006: The special departure from Kowloon Central Post Office to Kwong Yuen at 17:50 on weekdays was cancelled.[11]
