The New Territories Bus Route 280X is operated by Kowloon Motor Bus. It runs between Sui Wo Court and Tsim Sha Tsui (Mody Road), via Sha Tin Central, Tsing Sha Highway, Lin Cheung Road, Kowloon Station Commercial & Residential Area, Yau Ma Tei (←), which was reorganised from Route 280P which served only during the morning peak hours on weekdays.

History[]

Commencing background[]

Before the opening of this route, residents of Sha Tin Central who wanted to travel to Yau Tsim Mong District could only use Route 81 passing through Tai Po Road, which limited their options.

The Transport Department announced the Sha Tin District "Area Approach" Bus Route Reorganisation in 2014, proposing to make good use of the Tsing Sha Highway, hoping that all major areas in Sha Tin District would have direct and fast bus routes to the newly built Tsing Sha Highway Interchange, where passengers can transfer to other routes to West Kowloon and Central Kowloon at the cost of paying the fare difference. It was expected to save about 10 to 15 minutes compared to traveling through the Lion Rock Tunnel.

Among them, the service between Fo Tan, Sha Tin Central and the Tsing Sha Highway Interchange was to be provided by the new Route 280X. The plan proposed to cancel Routes 80M and 280P, which continued to have low ridership, and to launch new routes to and from Tsim Sha Tsui to facilitate passengers at Tsing Sha Highway BBI and Nga Cheung Road to transfer to other routes to reach various districts, which also reduces traffic in the Lion Rock Tunnel.

However, the Sha Tin District Council was quite dissatisfied with the proposal to cancel Route 80M. In the revised proposal in June 2014, KMB instead proposed to cancel Route 280P and reduce the frequency of Route 80M to free up resources to operate this route; the full fare was also reduced from $9.5 in the first round of proposals to $8.9; buses to East Tsim Sha Tsui were to be diverted via Austin Road and Nathan Road to facilitate passengers to go deeper into Tsim Sha Tsui. Finally, this route was put into service in early 2015, replacing Route 280P that was discontinued at the same time.[1]

Route change history[]

  • 24 January 2015: Route 280X entered service, and at the same time offering interchange concessions with other KMB solely-operated routes stopping at Tsing Sha Highway Bus Interchange or Western Harbour Crossing . [2][3]

  • 17 July 2016: With the closure of northbound Wui Man Road to facilitate the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong High-speed Rail Project, buses heading to Tsim Sha Tsui were rerouted via Austin Road West and the section of Nathan Road from Austin Road to Tsim Sha Tsui after arriving at Austin Road West.[5][6]
  • 30 October 2017: A special trip was added, departing from Royal Ascot at 07:50 from Mondays to Fridays, first stopping at "Jubilee Garden" and "Fo Tan Station" bus stops, then joining the regular routing to Tsim Sha Tsui at Fo Tan Road.[7]
  • 24 May 2020: Due to the Central Kowloon Route construction project, buses heading towards Sui Wo Court were rerouted after Yan Cheung Road via Hoi Wang Road, Jordan Road, Hoi Po Road, before returning to Lin Cheung Road and the original routing.[8][9]
  • 17 May 2021: Detoured via Shan Mei Street for Sui Wo Court direction, with the bus stop at "Shan Mei Street" being cancelled and a new stop was added at "Tsung Tau Ha Road" on Fo Tan Road instead.[10]

    • 23 April: Rerouted via Jordan Road, Wui Man Road, Wui Cheung Road, Canton Road and Ferry Street towards Yan Cheung Road after Shanghai Street. [12]
    • 28 May: Changed to directly turn into Jordan Road from Shanghai Street, with the bus stop at "Yan Cheung Road" being cancelled and replaced by "Saigon Street" . [13]

Bus deployment evolution history[]

Bus deployment evolution history of KMB Route 280X

Due to the narrow road surface at the section of Sui Wo Road near Fung Nin Court and the small space at Sui Wo Court Bus Terminus, Route 280X was initially operated by buses of 10.6 metres or less, with Dennis Trident10.6m (ATS) being the mainstay.

It was not until late November 2017, when the restrictions on the use of vehicles at Sui Wo Court Bus Terminus were lifted, that Dennis Trident 12m (ATR, which has since been withdrawn) and Enviro500 12m (ATE) were added to the service, with the entire route being 12m and straight-laddered by May 2019 and December 2020, respectively.

In early 2018, a Enviro500 MMC (ATENU1248/VB4398) with the "Heartbeat of The City" livery joined this route, and was clad in white full-body advertising livery celebrating KMB's 85th Anniversary from March of the same year until it was removed in December of the same year, and subsequently withdrawn and redeployed to Route 43X in November 2019.

In February 2021, to tie in with the launch of the e-payment system on this route, coupled with the retirement of the original Enviro500 12m (ATE), the scheduled buses on the entire route was reassigned to the Enviro500 MMC 12m (ATENU, with the 11.3-metre version (E6M) added to the service in October 2023).
