Hong Kong Buses Wiki

The New Territories Bus Route 269M is operated by Kowloon Motor Bus (KMB). It runs between Tin Yan Estate and Cho Yiu, which serves Hong Kong Wetland Park, Kingswood North, Tin Tsz Estate before travelling along Yuen Long Highway and Tai Lam Tunnel to and from Tsuen Wan Town Centre, Tai Wo Hau, Kwai Hing and Kwai Fong.

Route 269M, which mainly serves the southern and northern part of Tin Shui Wai New Town, provides whole-day service connecting Tin Shui Wai with Tsuen Wan and Kwai Chung together with routes 69M and 265M.

History[]

Commencing background[]

In the 1998-1999 Bus Route Development Programme, the Administration proposed to introduce this route, which was initially limited to one-way operation from Tin Shui Wai Town Centre to Kwai Fong MTR Station during peak hours, and could be upgraded to a whole-day service in August 1999 subject to demand.

Route change history[]

  • 12 December 1999: Route 269M entered service, running between Tin Shui Wai Town Centre and Lai King (North) to facilitate the intake of Tin Chung Court and Tin Wah Estate.[1]
  • 12 March 2001: A new stop was added opposite to Lynwood Court on Tin Wah Road.[2]
  • 29 March 2002: Interchange concessions at Tai Lam Tunnel Interchange were introduced to replace the Interchange Coupons with Octopus card for interchanging to other routes.[3]
    • The transitional period ended on 10 April, when Octopus interchange concessions fully replaced the interchange coupons.
  • 22 August 2002: Lai King terminus was relocated to Cho Yiu.[4][5]
  • 4 April 2004: A new section fare from Tin Tsz Estate to Cho Yiu was introduced with the cancellation of Route 64M.[6][7]
  • 4 October 2010: The first bus time from Tin Shui Wai Town Centre was advanced to 06:25.[8]
  • 22 November 2014: Interchange concession with Route B1 was introduced.[9]
  • 29 November 2014: Tin Shui Wai terminus was relocated to Tin Yan Estate, rerouting via Tin Sau Road for both directions and no longer passing through Tin Wing Road and Tin Wah Road.[10]

  • 1 March 2021: Octopus interchange concessions with Residents' Bus Routes NR331 and NR331S were introduced.[12]
  • 4 April 2021: A new two-way section fare from Tin Yan Estate to Tin Tsz Estate was introduced. Passengers are required to tap their Octopus cards at the Octopus validators at the relevant stops after alighting to enjoy the discounted fare.[13][14]

Bus deployments[]

A total of 17 Enviro500 MMC 11.3m (E6M) double-decker buses are assigned to this route as scheduled buses, and some of them may be dispatched away to routes 69M, 77K, 269A, 269P and 276P.

Due to the narrow bend at King Cho Road near Cho Yiu Catholic Primary School and CITA Building, this route can only be operated by buses with a length of 11.3 metres or less. However, under extenuating circumstances which require the operation of 12-metre buses, the concerned departures will terminate at Lai King (North) and will not proceed to Cho Yiu Chuen.

Bus deployment evolution history[]

Bus deployment evolution history of KMB Route 269M

Route 269M is operated by Dennis Dragon 11m (AD) and Volvo Olympian 12m (3AV) buses, with Neoplan Centroliner 12m (AP) being added in 2001 to provide low-floor service.

However, with the extension to Cho Yiu since 2002, this route could, at once, can only be operated by buses with a length of 10.6 metres or less, being operated by Dennis Trident 10.6m (ATS) for over 18 years. It was only in 2013 when newer Enviro400 10.5m (ATSE) buses were added, which was replaced by Volvo Super Olympian 10.6m (ASV) in November 2014.

In November 2017, this route was allowed to be operated by buses of 12 metres in length with centre-axle steering, and those buses began to appear on this route as special sights; later, several Neoplan Centroliner 12m (AP) and Dennis Trident 12m (ATR) buses were even swapped in to replace the original short-bodied buses, with all buses being unified to Dennis Trident 12m (ATR) the next month, followed by the replacement by Neoplan Centroliner 12m (AP) buses. However, the Transport Department once again banned 12-metre buses from operating on King Cho Road, which resulted in the withdrawal of all 12-metre buses and the reversion of the scheduled buses to the two short-bodied models. One Enviro400 (ATSE) was added in May 2019.

Since mid-June 2020, this route was approved to be operated by 11.3-metre buses, with Enviro500 MMC 11.3m buses (E6M4/WU3246, E6M5/WU3540, E6M16/WU3303 and E6M20/WU4443) operating on this route for the first time on 16 June 2020, and the model replaced all 10.6-metre buses 3 days later.

Ridership[]

This route, together with Route 265M, connects Tin Shui Wai North with Tsuen Wan and Kwai Chung. In the past, the two routes had almost the same alignment in the section of Kingswood North and Tin Tsz Estate, while there is also Route 69M serving Tin Yiu Estate, thus the three routes overlapped with each other and the operational efficiency was not good. Under the Yuen Long District "Area Approach" Bus Route Reorganisation, Route 265M has been changed to go straight out of Tin Tsz Road to the expressway, making this route continue to lose its attraction in Tin Shui Wai North, and the passenger source is concentrated in Tin Tsz Estate, where the route has withdrawn.

According to the Bus Route Planning Programmes and other documents, the ridership of this route is as follows:

  • 2009: The peak hour passenger utilisation rate is about 78% and the non-peak passenger utilisation rate is about 52%.
  • 2014: The average occupancy rate was 92% during the peakiest hour and 36% during the non-peak hours.
  • 2017: The highest hourly occupancy rate during the morning peak hour was 66%.[17]
  • 2025: The occupancy rate during the peakiest hour was 75%.
